ACTION STEP FOLLOW UP (5 MINUTES) LAST WEEK:

Write down 12 things that remind you of God’s faithfulness: 1. The cross 2. 3.

ACCOUNTABILITY QUESTION 1. How were you reminded of God’s faithfulness this week?

THE RECAP (10 MINUTES) In week 4 of the Joshua sermon series, Pastor Joby taught on Joshua 5 and Joshua’s experience with the pre-incarnate Jesus. God reminded Joshua that he was on holy ground and despite all of his accomplishments it was not about him, but rather about the glory of God. When we have a correct view of Christ we realize it is not about us. God is for us but we are not the point. Jesus is the point and it is all for His name’s sake.

BIG IDEA:

GOD DID NOT SAVE YOU TO MAKE MUCH OF YOU, BUT THE GOSPEL FREES YOU TO MAKE MUCH OF HIM.

TEACHING & DIALOGUE

Previous to Joshua 5:13-15, the Israelites were becoming less dependent on God. After crossing the Jordan and becoming self sufficient on the produce of the land the people were one step further away from relying on God for everything. Joshua had been a bold leader with many accomplishments, but God makes it known that the point is not Joshua and it is not the Israelites. Have someone read Joshua 5:13-15 out loud. 1. What does Jesus’ answer to Joshua’s question reveal? (Jesus’ “no” does not answer Joshua’s question because he does not fit into one of his categories.) 2. How did Joshua respond? (He fell on his face in submission and worshipped. Joshua was obedient to respect this divine encounter by removing his sandals.) Joshua experienced a Christophany in Joshua 5. This is a pre-incarnation appearance of Jesus and occurs in other areas of the Old Testament including Daniel 3 and the fiery furnace. Christ is one person of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Spirit) and has always been and always will be. 3. How do you often respond when the Holy Spirit reminds you that you are not the main character in God’s story? 4. How does our culture operate to make us believe the world revolves around us? How are you affected by this? Scripture is all about Jesus being the point. He is the main character. It is for His name sake and glory that God allows us to be part of His redemption story. As we live in the flesh we will continue to fall into the belief that the world revolves around us knowing that we must constantly be reminded of Christ’s beauty and authority. Just like Joshua, we must have divine encounters with Jesus.

Have several group members read the following verses out loud: Isaiah 48:9-11, Ephesians 1:4-6, Matthew 5:16, John 5:44, John 14:13, and John 12:27-28. 5. Where in your life do you need to humble yourself so Jesus’ name will be known? Have someone read Romans 8:31-39 out loud. 6. What do these verses reveal about God’s great love? Every response that God deserves is a response of worship. Knowing that God does not need us, but it is out of His love that He created us, redeemed us, and holds onto us, should put our perspective into focus. We are but specks in His Kingdom, but when we realize we are specks we can actually be free to be used by God in mighty ways.

MOMENT OF TRUTH:

“It is about the greatness of God, not the significance of man. God made man small and the universe big to say something about himself.” John Piper, Don’t Waste Your Life
