[email protected] VFD Firefighters “Give Burns the Boot” The Valdosta Fire Department will kick off the annual “Give Burns the Boot” drive on Thursday, May 5, joining more than 100 other fire departments throughout the state of Georgia in raising money to benefit the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation. This event, which relies on donations from citizens, will run through two weekends, ending on Saturday, May 14. The money raised through the Give Burns the Boot Drive and the recycled aluminum cans will help support Camp Oo-U-La, Georgia’s only camp held exclusively for burn-injured children. The camp, paid for entirely by the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation, allows burn victims to enjoy one week of camp a year to have fun with other children who have experienced the same trauma. By supporting the boot drive, the public will also be supporting their local fire department and community. Money raised will remain in Valdosta for local education and prevention efforts, as well as serve communities across the state where there are needs. Governor signs bill targeting sex trafficking Staff reports that Gov. Nathan Deal has signed legislation that enhances penalties for those involved in sex trafficking in Georgia. Attorney General Sam Olens’ Office says that House Bill 770 expands Georgia’s laws on sexual trafficking to include enhanced penalties for trafficking individuals with developmental disabilities and strengthens law enforcement’s ability to use undercover officers to proactively investigate sex trafficking of minors. (Ga Trend) Governor Deal signs education bills increasing opportunities for students, military members Staff reports that Gov. Nathan Deal today signed legislation that expands students’ and service members’ access to postsecondary education and jobs skills training. “Investing in education at every level — from our youngest minds to graduating high school seniors to returning service members and military veterans — has been, and remains, one of my top priorities,” said Deal. ‘Smart Gun’ Push Proves Obama Wants Gun Control Before Leaving Office! BELLEVUE, WA – Friday’s announcement by President Barack Obama that he will keep pushing for so-called “smart gun” technology during his final year in office is proof that he wants gun control to be a cornerstone of his legacy, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said. “The president is stubbornly clinging to the notion that he can convince American citizens to trust their safety to a so-far unreliable technology and push the country toward some sort of Utopia,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “His last-ditch effort to force industry and the public to accept his delusion that adding features to firearms that may make them less reliable in an emergency is nothing short of a compulsion. “Friday’s report from the Departments of Justice, Homeland Security and Defense clearly notes that efforts so far have fallen short,” he continued. “The country is still suffering from a lethargic economy, we’re facing a serious terrorist threat at home and abroad, our military needs attention, and Obama is preoccupied with this gun control fetish.” The president continues to refer to these efforts as “common sense steps” to prevent accidents, Gottlieb noted, but instead of placing so much emphasis on questionable research, the same safety goals could be met through public education, including safety courses as part of the public school curriculum. “We have never opposed research and development of safer firearms,” Gottlieb said, “but any design features that require RFID chips or other electronic technology that might fail in an emergency isn’t going to save lives, it will only put good people at risk. That amounts to accomplishing less than nothing. “This is just a bunch of anti-gun hot air that will do nothing to reduce violence and help fund and organize attacks on the Second Amendment,” he concluded. 678-346-6706 #1905

Landing At A Hidden Military Base You’ve all heard of the Air Force’s ultrahigh-security, super-secret base in Nevada, known simply as “Area 51?” Well, late one afternoon, the Air Force folks out at Area 51 were very surprised to see a Cessna landing at their “secret” base. They immediately impounded the aircraft and hauled the pilot into an interrogation room. The pilot’s story was that he took off from Vegas, got lost, and spotted the Base just as he was about to run out of fuel. The Air Force started a full FBI background check on the pilot and held him overnight during the investigation. By the next day, they were finally convinced that the pilot really was lost and wasn’t a spy. They gassed up his airplane, gave him a terrifying “you-didnot-see-a-base” briefing, complete with threats of spending the rest of his life in prison, told him Vegas was that-a-way on such-and-such a heading, and sent him on his way. The day after that though, to the total disbelief of the Air Force, the same Cessna showed up again. Once again, the MP’s surrounded the plane...only this time there were two people in the plane. The same pilot jumped out and said, “Do anything you want to me, but my wife is in the plane and you have to tell her where I was last night!”

Ranch Crock Pot Pork Chops Yield: 4-6 servings Ingredients 4 pork chops, about 1/2” thick a little oil for browning 1 Tbsp homemade ranch dressing mix (or you can use a Tbsp. from a store bought packet) 1 10-oz can cream of chicken soup, undiluted Mashed Potatoes-- I used my Garlic Mashed Potatoes Instructions Quickly brown the pork chops on both sides over medium high heat in a little bit of oil. Don’t completely cook them, just give them a quick sear. Place them in your crock pot and sprinkle with the ranch dressing mix. Pour the soup over the top. Cook on LOW heat for 5-6 hours, or on HIGH heat for 3-4 hours. Serve with hot mashed potatoes.
