The Compass May 2018 2018 Love Offering received until Sunday, May 27 The Love Offering for Missions is a special offering received by every Minnesota United Methodist church and is delivered to annual conference session. It benefits international, national, and Minnesota missions. This year's Love Offering will be received until Sunday May 27. It supports three projects: Puerto Rico Hurricane Recovery Trips will receive 65% of the Love Offering. Most of the funds will be used for construction supplies bought and used on the island. Some of the funds will cover the purchase of hygiene kits and cleaning bucket supplies. Additional funds will be used for scholarships for first-time mission participants.
Church Conference, Tuesday May 15 - 6:30 PM Our District Superintendent Susan Nienaber has authorized Cross Winds to hold a church conference for the purpose of receiving a Nominations Team report and electing ministry leaders for upcoming one, two, and three year terms. Our Nominations Team has been hard at work to match skills, passions, and needs of the congregation. All members of the congregation are invited and welcome to attend. Pastor Mike Dyrdal will be the presiding elder. The regular Cross Winds Board meeting will follow this church conference at approximately 7:00 PM.
The Annual Conference of United Methodists meets Tuesday, May 29 - Friday, June 1 in St Cloud Minnesota clergy and leaders gather every year to connect for worship, adopt goals and programs, and determine budgets; take stands on key issues; ordain clergy; and receive the bishop's appointment of ordained ministers. Cross Winds’ attendees include Pastors Mike Dyrdal and Rachel Devereaux and retired elders Pastors Harold Biederman and Shirley Duncanson. Jodi Peschman is serving as our Lay Delegate. Brent Cottington will be attending as the Big Waters District Lay Leader. You can look for more about Annual Conference at: https://www.minnesotaumc.org/annualconference
The Freedom Schools Program at Park Ave. UMC in Minneapolis, will receive 20% of the Love Offering. This is a six-week summer day camp experience for children. Its mission is to ensure that every child receives “a healthy, safe, and moral life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities.” Each year, about 50 scholars are part of Park Avenue UMC’s program, which aims to address the “summer slide” and to close the achievement gap. Love Offering funds will cover expenses for reading curriculum materials and for young adult mentors. NUMAS Haus will receive 15% of the Love Offering. It provides emergency shelter and support services to homeless single women and their children in New Ulm and surrounding Brown County. Clients receive housing for up to 90 days as they complete a program that includes counseling, health and financial management, parenting and food preparation skills, and obtaining access to county social services and vocational training. Love Offering funds will be used to help families with transitional rent assistance for six to twelve months.

Sunday, May 20 – “Not All of This is Me” On this Pentecost Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit and its gifts of courage and power to us. Pastor Mike preaches as we look at Acts 2: 1-21. Sunday, May 27 – “A Hero for Justice, William Wilberforce” Do you know the name “William Wilberforce?” A hero to Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln, Wilberforce led England to abolish slavery decades before the American Civil Way.
