Nutrition Tips Watermelon is the ultimate beat-the-heat, healthy treat. The name says it all – it consists of 92% water. It can cool you down, fill you up, and satisfy your sweet tooth. Watermelon is high in Vitamin A, C, and fiber. Make sure you treat yourself to a juicy wedge of watermelon this warm weather season!

JUMP INTO A HEALTHY SUMMER Get Active! Make family time active time. Activities such as going to the park are great ways to bond as a family and be physically active at the same time. While at the park you can play tag, toss a ball, jump rope, or hula-hoop. It doesn’t always have to be sports—just get moving!

Summer is fast approaching and it is the perfect time for the entire family to refresh their focus on healthy habits. However, with the freedom that summer brings, it can be a challenge to stay on track. Follow these simple health tips to make it a healthy and active summer: Seize the day – Make the most out of your summer days with foods that will energize you, such as whole grains, low-fat dairy, lean proteins, fresh fruit and vegetables. Make sure you visit IDEA Cafeterias this summer - FREE breakfast and lunch will be served to all children ages 18 and younger. Swap your dessert – Replace traditional desserts with a mix of in-season colorful fruits such as watermelon and mango. Watermelon is just as refreshing as ice cream and makes a great treat for family gatherings and cookouts. Stay hydrated – Replace sugary drinks with water. Staying hydrated with water eliminates the calories you would normally get from sugary drinks and hydrates your body from the summer heat. Try to drink at least 8 cups of water a day. Enhance the flavor by adding slices of fresh fruit like strawberries and lemons. Stay active – Find outdoor activities you enjoy; like riding your bike, gardening, swimming or playing sports with your friends and family. A minimum of 60 minutes of daily physical activity is recommended for all children. Read a book – Reading is fun but did you know it’s also great for your health? Reading can relax you and minimize stress. Make sure to open up several books this summer!

School Lunch Hero Day School Lunch Hero Day is on May 4th and it provides the opportunity for students, parents, and school staff to thank Child Nutrition Program employees for all they do to ensure safe and nutritious meals are available in schools. Our lunch heroes prepare healthy food, adhere to strict regulations and standards, navigate student food allergies, and offer service with a smile. Make sure to thank your campus cafeteria staff on May 4th!

IDEA’s Summer Meal Program IDEA Pubic Schools Child Nutrition Program will participate in the Seamless Summer Option (SSO) program. Through SSO IDEA cafeterias will serve breakfast and lunch at no cost, Monday-Thursday, starting June 4 through July 27 to IDEA students and community children, 18 years and younger. Our summer meals have been selected as winners of the Silver Turnip the Beet Award from USDA in recognition of outstanding efforts in serving nutritious meals during the summer months. For additional information, please contact your campus Cafeteria Manager.

A. When eating watermelon!

When do you go at red and stop at green?
