Summer Worship Hours Mark Your Calendar Just a reminder: Summer Worship Hours are 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend! We will return to the 9 & 10:45 a.m. worship times on Rally Day September 9, 2018. Enjoy your summer!

COULD’VE HAD A V8 ~ Pastor Eric The following 8 vegetables along with their vitamins, minerals and other health benefits are found in V8 juice: beets, carrots, celery, lettuce, parsley, tomatoes, spinach and watercress. WOW! That’s a lot of nutrition packed into a can of juice. A few weeks ago on April 11th, 23 fourth graders from Servant of Christ received their First Communion. Hopefully one of just a few thousand times they’ll receive communion during their lifetime. As Pastor Melissa and I were serving communion I thought about all they might, could or will face in their lifetime. A lifetime that will include lots of wonderful things but also lots of challenges because that’s just the way life is. Just as a glass of V8 makes sense as part of a balanced diet so does a small cup of wine or grape juice and a wafer along the promises associated with it on a regular basis. Just as the human body needs all of the nutrients those 8 vegetables provide--in the same way the human soul needs all of the promises of God associated with communion on a regular basis. Yet, receiving communion as part of worship is an easy habit to get out of especially as the weather gets nice after a long cold winter. Are you in a good spot in life right now? Are you wondering what the future holds or dealing with relationship stress, ageing parents, health concerns, children, bills…each of our lists could be endless WHERE DO YOU GO FOR HOPE AND ENCOURAGEMENT! The place to receive that is in worship and the sacrament because in that we are reminded in tangible ways of the many promises of God. So the next time you’re feeling stressed, or feeling like life is closing in on you or dealing with some kind of challenge and you’re not sure where to turn, instead of saying “I could’ve had a V8” stop and remind yourself “I could go to worship and receive communion”. God bless you and I can’t wait to see you in worship. Blessings, Pastor Eric

Upcoming Preaching Themes Sunday, 5/6

“Transformation is Really Possible!”

Text: Romans 12:2: Ephesians 4:22-24: 1 Peter 1:1 Theme: Some people say “you are who you are” and that transformation isn’t really possible. It is true there are some things we can’t change about ourselves. However, Scripture reminds us that transformation of our minds and hearts is possible though it will take some focus and work on our part. Questions to Think About as You Read:  Have you ever experienced a change of attitude or heart in your life towards a situation or person?  In what area of life have you either refused or just not wanted to change even though you know it could be a blessing to you and others around you?

“Trusting God More Than One’s Self”

Text: Genesis 18:9-15, 21:1-7 Theme: Abraham’s wife Sarai (later Sarah) Laughed when God said she would bear a son in her old age. God’s promise to her didn’t make sense after all the years. Sarah realized that she needed to trust God in this circumstance rather than making things happen herself. Questions to think About as You Read:  In what circumstance have you “tried everything” only at some point turning it over to God and things have worked out?  Does turning a situation over to God mean we just sit back and do nothing?  What do you think of the saying “Pray as if everything depends on God and work as if everything depends on you?” Spring Musical Celebration Sunday, 5/20 “Confronting Discouragement”

Bringing Communion to People in Their Homes! Please let Pastor Eric or Pastor Melissa know if there is a Servant of Christ member unable to attend worship due to medical reasons. The Pastors would be happy to bring communion to them in their home. Just call the church office at 763-427-5070. 2 - SERVANT SPIRIT

Text: 1 Kings 19:1-13 Theme: In this passage Elijah is discouraged to the point of no longer wanting to live. However, The Lord had more plans for Elijah. Facing discouragement is a part of life when things don’t go the way we anticipate or hope. Discover how God spoke to Elijah and renewed and transformed him for what was ahead despite his intense moments of discouragement. Questions to think About as You Read:  When have you been really discouraged about life? 

What were the things that helped you confront that discouragement?

How did the Lord work to bring you through that discouragement to a new place of hope?

worship & learning Memorial Day Weekend Sunday, 5/27 “Effective Ministry” Text: Acts 18:23-27 Theme: Aquila and Priscilla are a married couple who made an effective ministry team. They used their home as a warm place of hospitality to educate others, in this case Apollos in the faith. This passage is a reminder that the home is one of them most important places for the spread of the Gospel. Questions to think About as You Read:  What non-clergy person or persons have been instrumental in your faith? 

How was faith taught or modeled in the home you grew up in?

Is there one thing you could do to teach or model the faith in your home or for your family if children are grown and not living at home anymore?

Lenten Thank You Thank you to all who helped make Lent, Holy Week and Easter so wonderful. Young At Heart Meets Monday, May 7th Young at Heart will meet on Monday, May 7th in the Family Room at the back of the Sanctuary. Don’t forget your lunch. Since we have finished the book of Romans, we’ll spend some time deciding what we want to do beginning next fall and we’ll have a special “One Session Study” on Words of Encouragement from Scripture.

4 - SERVANT SPIRIT

Luke tells us that it was during Pentecost, when the first followers of Jesus were gathered together remembering Sinai, that "they saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them." This is like Sinai all over again, only this time God isn't taking up residence in a tabernacle or a mountain or a set of words. God is dwelling in people. And this isn't just any group of people; it's people from "every nation under heaven." It's Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt (Egypt!) and parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome; Cretans and Arabs. The disciples are amazed at and overwhelmed by this new reality in which everybody everywhere can understand the new thing that God is doing through Jesus. ..Stunning. And then Luke adds a significant line at the end of the story that is easy to miss. He tells us that some people saw this, the rebirth of Sinai, and made fun of them, saying, "They have had too much wine." Aren't there other stories in the scriptures in which the people had plenty of wine? Where do people drink lots of wine? Of course, at weddings. A wedding is where Jesus did his first miracle, involving wine. And Sinai is also seen as a wedding ceremony. And it's here at Pentecost that the church, the bride of Christ, takes her place in history and a massive number of people become followers of Jesus. Luke even tells us how many. And as with many of the things Luke writes, it's about something else. We're told that at Sinai, Moses spent so much time up on the mountain that the people became restless and built a golden calf to worship instead. When Moses discovered this, he was enraged and called for the death of those who sinned, which a group of Levites carried out in a bloody, murderous act of violence. It's written in the Exodus account that three thousand were killed that day. And how many does Luke say were added to the disciples' number here in the early days of the church? Three thousand. Luke wants us to know that Sinai has not been forgotten. The covenant is alive. What was lost is being reclaimed. The divine and the human are coming together again. Blessings,

ministry & mission Your gifts to Servant of Christ Change Lives! It’s been almost a year since terrible hurricanes swept through Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Haiti, Cuba, Texas and Florida causing incredible devastation. You don’t hear or see much about the ongoing relief work that is still needed. A portion of your gifts to Servant of Christ have gone to Lutheran Disaster Response who continue to be on the front lines of relief. In Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands relief supplies have been provided to survivors and assistance is being provided to Lutheran Social services of the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean synod to build their capacities to respond to the ongoing relief work. In Haiti and Cuba lost tools have been replaced for farmers affected by the hurricane and female heads of households have received cash assistance to help families get back to normal with dishes, cookware and blankets. In Texas and Florida case management is being provided for survivors and crisis counseling has been provided for thousands of people from over 20 different countries.
