May 2019 - The Key - page 2 Graduation from high school is a milestone event in the life of the graduate, her or his family, and the community as well. I recall my high school graduation as an important moment in my life. Perhaps I wasn’t as keen on this at the time, but certainly, later in life I grew to appreciate the significance of what a high school graduation truly represents. Certainly high school graduation means so many things to so many people, but some things come to the forefront for those who are graduating. For one thing, it means that all of the hard work over the last four years was worth it. All of those late nights cramming for a test to get an A... all of the honors and special awards that these graduates earned through hard work and perseverance. Graduation means a new beginning. There is another chapter now to be written. A new school (college) with new classes, new friends and new opportunities are on the horizon. It’s a chance to take all of the information and things that have been learned and discover who this person really is. Graduation means opportunity and freedom. High school graduates have the chance to go out in to the world and choose a career or school that’s perfect for them. On Sunday, May 19th we are celebrating the graduating seniors from our churches - Ben Lopez and Davis Moore from First UMC, and Autumn Grussing, McKinley Nelson, Braxton Vortherms, and Brisa Zebe from Adrian UMC. We are planning for a graduation reception for them from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the First UMC Fellowship Hall (special thanks to the Night Lights Circle for their organization and planning of this event). There is only one worship service on that Sunday and we will recognize these graduating seniors during that time as well. I hope you will come and celebrate with these graduates and their families as they enter another chapter in the adventure of their lives! May the Lord richly bless our graduating seniors!

Rev. Dr. Daren Flinck

Here are the highlights from the Covenant Council meeting held on April 25th, 2019:

Celebrations:

Our Lenten and Easter season was very well done. All the Lenten services were well attended. We are grateful for all of our musical leadership - Jeanette and Jane with the Chancel Choir, Jolene with her expertise on the organ, Galen with his passion for the bell choir and the dedication that Elizabeth Bushard has provided for the Children’s Choir. We also commend the musical leadership at Emmanuel (Brenda DeSmith and Carolyn Beerman) who have excelled in their musical passion at Emmanuel and with other churches. Missions reports that a donation of $100 was given to each of the food shelves to match the matching fund grant drive during March. Confirmation class will confirm 12 persons on Sunday, April 28th (8 at First and 4 in Adrian). We will have a reception following the service. The First UJMC Foundation will provide the cost for the bus to the Twins/ Royals game in June (approximately $1100). The roof has been repaired over the hallway and the damaged ceiling tiles have been replaced with new ones. The trustees are working on a plan to address the continued leaking that we have experienced over the past number of years in that same area. The finance committee reports that we now have enough volunteers to help with counting the donations each Sunday - thank you to everyone who has volunteered to serve on this team!

Challenges:

Please consider visiting those who are in care centers - they so appreciate it when someone from the church visits them. The missions team wondered if the monies from Reach, Renew, Rejoice conference mission commitment First UMC made several years in a row ($2000 per year), if those funds (now completed) could be channeled to missions for their ministries. This idea will be examined by the finance team.

Current Focus: Missions team has scheduled the yearly church mission team to work at The Banquet in Sioux Falls on Monday, July 29th at 5:00 p.m. - please put this on your calendar! The Minnesota Annual Conference Love Offering will be taken in the early part of June the ministries that will be impacted by our gift will be the Lao

May 2019 - The Key - page 5 United Methodist church, Volunteer Lawyers Network, and the Volunteers in Mission. Education is looking for a volunteer coordinator to help with Vacation Bible School (tentatively June 10-13). May 19th is the last Sunday for Sunday school.

Cutting Edge Issues: Item #1: One Church Exploratory Team Update: We discussed the progress of the Exploratory Team. The team is in the process of preparing the merger document, detailing the financial, building matters, worship design, volunteer staffing, and name changes. The target date for a special church conference to vote on this proposal has been rescheduled for Sunday, July 21, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. at First UM C. All three congregations will have separate ballots (no absentee ballots are allowed) and a 2/3majority is required for approval. A Town Hall meeting on Sunday, May 19th is being planned before the Special Church Conference to bring everyone up to speed on the proposal, giving everyone a chance to understand the complete picture of the proposal. One worship service will be held that Sunday, with all three congregations participating. A second Town Hall meeting is set for Wednesday, May 22nd at Various questions and comments have been received - the Exploratory Team will be working on the responses for the Town Hall meeting. Item #2: Live Streaming: We discussed the possibility of live streaming our worship services, bible study or other church events. Through MediaShout, a live streaming service is available for $99 per month. It would allow us to broadcast our worship services live through various media at the same time - to our website, our Facebook page and to our YouTube channel. We tabled this matter until the next meeting. Item #3: 2019 Financial Report: Due to weather related cancellations for Sunday worship, we have had a tough winter. However, we are very grateful for the surplus we ended the year with because it has helped us to sustain our financial position. We remain current on our apportionments throughout the year. Praise God for your faithful giving for the ministry of our church. The next council meeting is set for Thursday, May 16th at 6:00 p.m.. Respectfully submitted, Rev. Dr. Daren Flinck

Town Hall Meeting… The Exploratory Team invites you to join with them for a time of excitement and learning as they share with the three congregations the results of their work for nearly the past year. On Sunday, May 19th (following One Worship Service at 10:30 a.m. at First UMC) the Team invites you for dinner after worship, then a Town Hall meeting shortly thereafter to give you the details of the proposal that will be submitted for approval by all three churches in June. The proposal will include financial data, program ministry options, mission and service opportunities, planned worship schedules and other exciting details that will help all three churches blend into one congregation. You might be surprised at what is being suggested to change and, importantly, what is recommended to stay the same! You may have some questions - the Exploratory Team would like to be prepared to answer any questions you may have. Use the insert for any questions or comments you would like to ask - the Team will have the answers at the Town Hall meeting. If you absolutely are unable to attend on that Sunday, a second gathering will be held on Wednesday, May 22nd at 6:00 p.m. at First Church to assist you in seeing the proposal and asking questions. Put this important date on your calendar - you won’t want to miss it!

Special Church Conference… There has been a change in the date for the Special Church Conference. We have moved the conference to Sunday, July 21st following worship at 12:00 p.m. at First UMC. Please make a note of this time change! All three congregations will have separate ballots and vote on the proposal as a church congregation, requiring 2/3 vote of those who are present. There will not be any opportunity for absentee ballots, according to the Book of Discipline - a 2/3 vote for those who are present is required. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact anyone from the Exploratory Team: Jason Barrie, Brenda DeSmith, Karen Cook (Emmanuel); Brian Bishop, Ellen Hoefker, Galen Benton, Nancy Galland, Pat Grimmius, Jorge Lopez, Beth Habicht (First); and Linda Reese, Heidi Klingenberg, Robin Erlandson (Adrian).

Adrian Council Update: Here is a summary of the Council Meeting held last Monday night at Adrian: We celebrate moments when our church sanctuary is filled! On Easter Sunday, we had 67 people in attendance (plus one live lamb!) On Confirmation Sunday, we had 91 people who came to worship. Our Sunday morning technology is working much better now that Pastor Daren switched from MediaShout to PowerPoint. Financial tracking by Susan at First UMC is going well. G1 will continue to meet until May 8th. This year, vacation bible school will more than likely pair with First UMC as we did last year. If you are interested in helping coordinate or volunteer, contact Heidi. We will be celebrating our graduating seniors at the one church worship on Sunday, May 19th at 10:30 a.m. at First UMC (a graduation reception is scheduled for that morning from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.). We confirmed four young men who all joined the church in April. The Town Hall Meeting is set for Sunday, May 19th at 11:30 a.m. at First UMC - a second meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22 at 6:00 p.m. at First UMC in case you were not able to make the first one. Our March financial report looks solid - apportionments are paid through April.

Exploratory Team Update: The Exploratory Team continues to meet and discuss the dynamics of blending three churches into one. The Team invites you to learn more about the proposal at a Town Hall Meeting on May 19th at 11:30 a.m. or on May 22nd at 6:00 p.m. (both at First UMC). These gatherings will be designed to inform people on the process for the one church, three sites, and to field questions and concerns that people may have.

Honoring Our Graduates: We invite you to join with our high school graduates from our area churches as we celebrate their accomplishments, The celebration will take place on Sunday, May 19th from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.. in the fellowship hall at First UMC. There is one worship service that Sunday and we will honor the graduates during our worship as well. Sponsored by the Night Light Circle, please join us for coffee cakes and fruit as we celebrate with the graduates: Ben Lopez, Davis Moore and Marnath Deng from First UMC, and Autumn Grussing, McKinley Nelson, Braxton Vortherms, and Brisa Zebe from Adrian UMC.

Journey to the Holy Land: One of the most rewarding trips you could ever take is to travel to the Holy Land. Tour host Vicki Tiede (daughter of Gary and Sally Hibma) is inviting us to join her on a learning trip to Israel in March 27 - April 7, 2020. A number of persons have taken this trip (or have taken other trips) and would love to give you a first hand account of what this trip might mean to your faith journey. This includes the very exciting day on Palm Sunday, walking with thousands of other Christian pilgrims down the Mount of Olives to the Holy City of Jerusalem. Are you interested? We are looking forward to hearing more from Vicki on Palm Sunday or you may contact Sally or Pastor Daren for more details. There is still plenty of time to register for this once in a lifetime opportunity - it’s never too early to start to prepare for such a trip. Think about it - pray about it - and find out about it! You will not be disappointed!
