verse of the month

Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, you are very great. You are clothed with honor and majesty. ~Psalm 104:1~

Tone of Voice and Words Matter ~ Pastor Ericrie n Recently I was in a local grocery store and overheard a parent berating their small child. I don’t know what that parent’s life was like or what they’d been through that day but what was clear was their tone of voice and choice of words went way beyond parenting and simply saying “no” to candy. I began to wonder, if that’s how they talk to their child in public what goes on at home? Here are three of many verses in the Bible that remind us of the power of words:

“Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing” Proverbs 12:18

“An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up”

Proverbs 12:25

“He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin” Proverbs 13:3

Many workplaces have rules and HR departments that govern the kind of language and words that are used so people talk to each other in at the very least a “civil” manner. There are no HR departments in our homes and people often speak to those they love using words and a tone of voice that can be demeaning, discouraging and sometimes even cruel. It usually happens when we’re angry or frustrated over some issue that may not even involve the person we’re talking to. The words and the tone of voice just come out and once they do we can never take them back. A friend of mine has what I call the gift of encouragement. He’s a great guy to be around not only because he’s positive but because even when he is frustrated or angry his words and tone of voice don’t get the best of him, He has been a blessing to many throughout his lifetime.

Just a reminder: Summer Worship hours are 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend! We will return to the 9 & 10:45 a.m. worship times on Rally Day September 8, 2019. Enjoy your summer!

How can God use you to be an encourager to others? How can God help you use your words and tone of voice to be helpful in people’s lives instead of the opposite? Our words and tone of voice are powerful indeed, they have the power to heal and encourage or the power to destroy and discourage. Whether it’s with children, adults and especially the people we say we love let’s all choose wise words that bring healing. God Bless you and I can’t wait to see you in church this Sunday! Blessings,

Upcoming Preaching Themes Sunday, 5/5/19 ~ God’s Work Our Hands: Empty Vessels Text: Philippians 2:1-11 Theme: We don’t try to be like Jesus because we think we can reach perfection—we know we can’t. We try to be like Jesus because that’s part of our imperfect witness to the world. Just as Jesus emptied himself for us by going to the cross, we empty ourselves for others in service in the name of Jesus. Questions to Think About as You Read:  When have you had fun serving others?  What actually constitutes serving others?

Sunday, 5/12/19 ~ God’s Work Our Hands: I Thought You Were Going To Do It Text: 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 Theme: When it comes to serving whether at church or outside of church. It’s always tempting to think somebody else will do it. The reality is God has given each person gifts to be used in service. Questions to Think About as You Read:  In what ways are you serving?  When was the last time you were reluctant to serve but felt maybe you weren’t qualified?  When was the last time at work or home you didn’t feel “qualified” to do something but jumped in and it turned out ok?

Saturday, 5/18/19 ~ Confirmation Service - 10:30 am

marks of discipleship: Prayer, Weekly Worship, Biblical Literacy, Spiritual Friendship, Serving and Giving

communion

Sunday, 5/19/19 ~ God’s Work Our Hands: Hopeless to Helpful Text: Luke 10:25-37 Theme: Sometimes it convenient and fun to serve and sometimes it isn’t but we know it’s the right thing to do. This familiar passage can cause us to think deeply about what it means to love our neighbor and who our neighbor really is. Questions to Think About as You Read:  Why is it tempting to only want to help people who we think are worthy of being helped?  What is the byproduct of service?

Bringing Communion to People in Their Homes! Please let Pastor Eric or Pastor Melissa know if there is a Servant of Christ member unable to attend worship due to medical reasons. The Pastors would be happy to bring communion to them in their home. Just call the church office at 763-427-5070.

2 - SERVANT SPIRIT

Sunday, 5/26/19 ~ God’s Work Our Hands: Serving = Significance Text: Romans 12:1-2; Galatians 5:22-23; 1 John 2:1-6 Theme: Everybody wants to feel important. We go to great lengths to set ourselves apart from others. Whether it’s posting only the fun parts of our lives on social media, to our clothing to our stuff we all want to feel significant. Scripture reminds us that real significance comes from giving ourselves away in service. Questions to Think About as You Read:  What kinds of service have you done that you feel really good about?  What things besides serving to we look to in order to feel significant in life?

May Bible Study asks the question:

Why? Making Sense of God’s Will

Tuesdays at 9:30 AM May, 7, 14, 21, 28 Wednesdays at 6:45PM May 8, 15, 22, 29 When the ground shakes, and a poor nation’s economy is destroyed; when the waters rise, washing away a community’s hopes and dreams; when a child suffers neglect and abuse; when violence tears apart nations; where is God? If God is all powerful, and if each one of us is a beloved child of God, then how can God allow tragedy and suffering to infest his creation? In Why? Making Sense of God's Will, best-selling author Adam Hamilton brings fresh insight to the age-old question of how to understand the will of God. Rejecting simplistic answers and unexamined assumptions, Hamilton addresses how we can comprehend God’s plan for the world and ourselves. 

4 - SERVANT SPIRIT

5 And he said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; 6 for a friend of mine has arrived, and I have nothing to set before him.’ 7 And he answers from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been locked, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, at least because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs. 9 “So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for a fish, will give a snake instead of a fish? 12 Or if the child asks for an egg, will give a scorpion? 13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

In Luke, Jesus tells a strange story. At midnight an unexpected guest arrives. He is hungry, but you have nothing to feed him. So you go the house of a friend to borrow some food. “Don’t bother me, “ the friend says. “The door’s locked. The children are asleep. I can’t give you anything now. Go home.” But you keep on pestering him. You are so persistent that he finally gets up and gives you what you want. Then Jesus adds, “For every one who asks, receives, and he who seeks, finds, and to him who knocks, it will be opened.” And his point seems to be that the secret of prayer is persistence. Keep at it, keep speaking into the darkness and even if nothing comes, speak again and then again. And finally the answer is given. It may not be the kind of answer we want – the kind of stopgap peace, the kind of easy security, the kind of end to loneliness that we are apt to pray for. Christ never promises peace in the sense of no more struggle and suffering. Instead he helps us to struggle and suffer as he did, in love, for one another. Christ does not give us security in the sense of something in this world, some cause, some principle, some value, which is forever. Instead, he tells us that nothing in this world is forever, all flesh is grass. He does not promise us unlonely lives. His own life speaks loud of how, in a world where there is little love, love is always lonely. Instead of all these, the answer that he give, I think, is himself. If we go to him for anything else, he may send us away empty or he may not. But if we go to him for himself. I believe that we go away always with this deepest of all our hungers filled.

ministry & mission Your Giving this year will save Lives One of the ministries that Servant of Christ supports is Compassion International. Compassion International is one of the most trusted Christ –Centered ministries in the world. May. The musicians have taken this journey with you as we prepare and practice songs that go along with our core values. This month we look at the core value of serving. I would like to take this opportunity to give a big thank you to the musicians at Servant of Christ who serve through music ministry. I first want to thank the directors, Barb Auer, Susan Huemann and Keira Moore. Their willingness to collaborate, serve and share with us is appreciated. They are a talented group of women that have a heart for sharing not only their love of music, but their love for the Lord. Thank you to the adult choir and youth choir members. The choir members share their time and talent with us on Sunday mornings. They continue to move and inspire us with the anthems they share. The contemporary and Lenten bands consistently amaze me with their talent and their service. Thank you for the hours you donate to practicing and preparing for worship. On May 19th during both services, we will be sharing a collaboration of the adult music ministry teams. The worship service will touch on each of our core values through music. Please mark your calendars for this special worship event. Following worship, there will be a lunch provided for all of the musicians and their families. It is a small way of saying a big THANK YOU for your service to Servant of Christ. Thank you for being a light here at SOC and in being a light to the world.

Remembering the Fallen Memorial Day, May 27, 2019 A lot of us have forgotten the true meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 and was first observed on 30 May 1868 when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution was passed in 2000 to help remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day. This resolution calls for all Americans, at 3:00 p.m. on Memorial Day, “To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to Taps.” On Memorial Day this year, at 3:00 let us all stop and say a prayer for those who have lost their life defending our freedoms. It is a very small sacrifice to make for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. The Armed Services Outreach Committee will be honoring our fallen brothers and sisters by placing flags on the tables in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, May 26th. Information was taken from: www.usmemorialday.org Armed Services Outreach Committee
