Lloyd’s Lines—Dr. Lloyd Braswell, Senior Pastor Christ has risen! He has risen indeed! This is our Easter greeting. I typically think of Easter as one day, but actually the season of Easter begins at sunset on the night before Easter and last until Pentecost (7 weeks later), so we are now in the Easter Season. May we realize that we are resurrection people! May we always live in the hope of the Resurrection and realize the great love of God. Jesus died for our sins and was resurrected so that we can have Eternal Life. Christ has risen! He has risen indeed! April 28th was a great day with some mixed emotions at our church. We had a combined worship service and we celebrated in the baptism of Emma Farrier, Mimi Walker and Nick Williams. It was also Alice Clarke’s last Sunday as our Youth Minister. We had a reception in her honor. We have a strong youth ministry team and many of the plans for the summer have already been made. Houston Blake will be our summer youth intern. She will be serving through CBF student.church. Megan Parrish will also be serving through student.church as a summer intern at River Road Baptist. Be in prayer for our youth program and leaders that this summer can be a great time for them to grow in their faith and to grow closer to one another. As we move into May we celebrate Mother’s Day. This is always a special time to thank our mothers for their influence on our families and on our church. Mother’s Day is May 12th and we will have a guest preacher, who is a mother, on that day. Dr. Roberta Damon will be preaching. I am so appreciative for Bill and Roberta for their service of God and it is always special when Roberta preaches for us. I hope you will be with us on Mother’s Day. As I am writing this article my heart is heavy for so much pain in this world. Matthew 5:4 – “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Romans 12:15 – “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” As I reflect over the past month there is much to mourn. On the news, we hear about the bombings of churches in Sri Lanka, a shooting in a Synagogue in California and in a University in NC. At times I feel overwhelmed by the pain and the hate. We must be a light and point to a different way. Within our church family, in April we mourned the death of Phyllis Bass after an extended sickness and the sudden death of Melanie Foreman through a car accident. We must continue to love and care for these families. Yesterday, I learned of the death of Mary Lib Causey. Her husband Jack is a retired pastor and leader in NC. He is also a mentor and close friend. A short time later I received a call from a member of the last church I served as pastor in NC. Their current pastor Bill Bigger died from brain cancer. He last preached on February 10 and learned of his cancer on February 11. I know of two other families that have experienced the death of a child in the past month. I pray and I mourn, but I also share hope – for Christ has risen. He has risen indeed! As Christians that believe in the resurrection we are people of Hope. During this Easter Season and throughout the year, we are to always live in the hope and power of the resurrection. May we rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn. At times when we mourn may we look to each other and to God to receive comfort. In the midst of pain, let’s shine the light of Christ and share His hope. Peace, Lloyd

Easter Celebration A huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped make this event a success. Thank you for the prayers, candy and egg donations and especially thank you for the volunteers that helped setup and work the event. We had around 50 children and their families attend. We had 2300 Easter eggs. It ended up being a rainy day, but we still had an egg hunt in for the kids.

News from the Preschool What an exciting year we have had! A lot of new families have been coming thru our doors for the first time. We are getting ready for our last field trip and it’s to the ZOO! This is our favorite field trip and we average about 150 people going with us. Our 2 year old class is getting ready to turn 3 and getting potty trained! Yeah!!! Moms will have extra money this summer to buy something else at Target besides pull-ups. Our 3 year olds have turned 4 and are ready to move up to the Pre-K class in September. Our 27 Pre-K class members are practicing everyday for graduation.

This year our graduation will be on Wednesday, June 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Please come out and watch these shiny new faces graduate and move on to a new adventure in their life. It won’t be long and the halls will be quiet again for a few short weeks; then the tears and the meltdowns will be back in September. You know I’m talking about the teachers. Ha ha! We are still taking registration for the fall. So, tell your family and friends. Wishing everyone a Happy Mother’s Day! Love, CBPreschool

Companion Suppers Companion Suppers are a great opportunity to get to know others in our community. It’s a free meal that anyone can attend. Companion suppers meet the first and third Thursday of each month (September-May). We encourage you to reach out to your family, friends, and neighbors and ask them to attend our Companion Suppers. Our last supper for the season will be May 16. We will restart in September.

Men’s Breakfast The third Sunday of each month we host a Men’s Breakfast in the Great Hall. Join us on Sunday, May 19 at 8:00 a.m. for a great breakfast and fellowship! This will be the last Men’s Breakfast until September. 7

Now and Then... As Mother’s Day rolls around once again, you might be surprised to learn that our church has celebrated this special Sunday every May since 1908, the year Anna Jarvis created this American tradition. Thanks to her efforts, it was formally recognized as a national holiday in 1914, but she ultimately grew disillusioned with its rising commercialization and (unsuccessfully) campaigned for its removal. Obviously, the idea of celebrating mothers can hardly be described as an entirely modern invention, as many ancient cultures celebrated creation goddesses who gave mythical birth to their worlds. However, an early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday” fell on the fourth Sunday of Lent when the faithful were called to return to their home or “mother” church for special dedicated services. Children also began honoring their mothers on this day and it lingered in British and European tradition until the WWII era when it gradually merged with the American event. Our church news bulletins from the 1950s reveal a low-key celebration centered around the mother’s role in the home and often featured a mother-daughter luncheon sponsored by the Girl’s Auxiliary (thanks Hazel Taylor for solving the G.A. mystery!). In his sermon “The Role of a Mother,” Rev. Herman Inge acknowledged “the work, the problems, the restrictions, the opportunities and the sense of achievement of a mother.” He also declared, “Our expression of appreciation and love on Mother’s Day should be but the heightening of what we have felt and expressed through the year.” (5 May 1954) This was what Anna Jarvis envisioned when she sought to honor her own late mother’s work in West Virginia where she taught young mothers family values and peace in the aftermath of the War Between the States. It wasn’t about the flowers or candy or gifts…it was about the dedication of one Sunday to celebrate a special bond of love that exists all year. Now, celebrate the Anna Jarvis way and take this opportunity to thank God for providing special mothers who work through the problems for those achievements that still touch the lives of their families and a wider world, just as they did then…… In Christian Fellowship, Nancy Meager

Rusty’s Rap Session The Still Small Voice

Read First Kings 19:1-21 for reference.

The Old Testament prophet Elijah was in fear for his life. Queen Jezebel had sent him a message that she would not rest until she had killed him within 24 hours. When he received the news that she was set upon and committed to killing him, he ran. He left with great haste and walked a day's journey before he stopped to rest. Considering the situation causes me to realize Elijah's emotional state. Elijah is often criticized for his response to Jezebel's threat for being weak and afraid, but we weren't there. We did not walk in his shoes. For years Elijah had been at odds with the ungodly local authorities and the prophets of false gods. He was also directly in conflict with King Ahab and his Queen Jezebel. After some consideration, I have come to believe that Elijah was emotionally spent. All of the stress of living his life in a fish bowl, as it were, constantly being in the forefront of what was going on in his world had taken its toll. He was physically, emotionally, and mentally spent. His life at that moment had become more than he could handle. So, when he received the threat upon his life from Jezebel, he did what he had to do; he ran. That threat put him over the edge. Life had become more than he could handle on his own and even though he knew who God was, and even though he knew what God could do, he still had fear. His fear was so great that he requested of God to allow him to die. He felt like he could not go on. Elijah rested under a juniper tree and fell asleep from exhaustion. During his sleep an angel of the Lord woke him and encouraged him to eat, for he was weak and needed strength. After he ate, he laid back down to rest for he was still exhausted. There are times when life does that to us, sometimes we just want to stay in bed. He slept again for a while and the angel came back and awoke him again encouraging him to eat because "the journey is too great for you." Verse 8 says that "he arose, he did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that food for forty days and forty nights." God then led him to a mountain and "a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart...but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire a gentle whisper." The King James version of the Bible calls that whisper a "still small voice." When Elijah heard that whisper he went and stood before the Lord. There are times in our lives when the powerful winds tear our lives apart. The earthquakes seem to shake us beyond what we are able to bear. The fires of destruction come and wreak havoc that leave us lost and without answers. Sometimes, truly life gives us more than we can handle. I have never agreed with the quote, "God will not give you more than you can bear." It simply isn't true. Sometimes God allows thing in our lives that are more than we can bear on our own. That's why we need Him. Sometimes we need to simply trust Him, even in the midst of our heartache and chaos. My friend, Victor Foreman, tragically lost his daughter Melanie in a car crash just days before Easter. During his eulogy for Melanie he told of how he was visited by a small sweat bee as he was writing about contributing to the Sierra club for her favorite cause; saving the bees. He also said that her boyfriend, Eric, and his family went to visit the crash site. While he was there the same kind of sweat bee buzzed him and would not leave him until they finally got in the car and left. I have a very similar story. My wife's Uncle Richie passed away many years ago. He passed suddenly and unexpectedly. Uncle Richie loved to smoke a pipe. The sweet smell of pipe tobacco emanated from certain areas of his home because Aunt Sarah, didn't let him smoke just anywhere. During his funeral service in the church I began to smell pipe tobacco. I looked at my wife Jacqueline and asked, "Do you smell that?" She answered, "Yes, I do." We turned to the people on our left and right and all around us. Everyone could smell the pipe tobacco, but no one was smoking. I believe that was God's "still small voice" bringing us comfort that Richie was okay. He is with Him. I believe the sweat bee for Victor and for Eric was God's still small voice saying, "Melanie is fine. I have her in the palm of my hand. She has no more pain." Why God allows great heartache and pain, I do not know. I will probably never know. But I do know that when the winds, the earthquakes and the fires of life seek to destroy the things we hold on to, there will always be a "still small voice." God will comfort us if we allow him. If we remain open to Him, he will meet us and carry us on; for this journey is too great for us to handle alone. We need Him and we need each other. 9

Saying Good-bye to a Friend to All How exciting it must be in Heaven? Phyllis Bass has arrived with tons of energy and lots of ideas to make things work better—look out God! I can see her now wearing her wool “Pendleton” suit. Phyllis was such a lover of education on all levels. She inspired me to always be a better listener for new ideas and to “just try it.” Change is good. Phyllis had so many talents. She always fixed an arrangement for our Preschool Thanksgiving Feast and Graduation and never charged us. She always looked out for the underdog and took them under her wings. I was one of them. We shared the same birthday and love of food! She sure did love her brownies. Her ideas may have been old fashioned sometimes but to me she showed me how to re-invent them to work. She waltzed thru the preschool and pointed out this and that and said, “rearrange it for a child’s level.” We will all miss those big eyes of hers, looking at us, listening to us and then laughing with us. She was always a friend to everyone so when you see Roger, let him know what she meant to you as well. May we all be a loyal steward of our talents to our Lord and Savior and to CBC. Thank you from the Preschool We have a lot of “Shout Outs” this month— A BIG Shout Out goes to Morris and David. They are known to us teachers as “Turner and Hooch”-I don’t know which one is “Hooch.” Ha ha! They are always so willing to come down and drive the children and teachers on our local field trips. They don’t even mind all the noise on the busses, but you have to keep in mind that they are hard of hearing. Can’t say enough “thank you’s” to “Cary the Tool Man.” You know who his is. He’s the man with the yellow legal pad, measuring tape and pencil in his hands. He is always down here fixing things all over the church, with Shirley Wright right behind him. Their team of workers keep CBC in tip-top shape. Thanks, also, to Crystal Williams and Darlene Williams for a fantastic Easter Egg Hunt and Vendor and Craft Fair. We had two parents who signed up and loved it! They want to come back in the fall for another one. It takes a lot of planning and hard work and also great weather to have these kind of functions. Thanks again!

Thanks a million to Greg Gwaltney for the Antique Car Show! That is all my two grandsons talked about. They want me to buy one of them “for real” and drive them around! I told them, “Don’t send their letter to Santa—just send it to Mr. Gwaltney—he has more money!” What a fantastic outreach to get folks to drop by and see what CBC has to offer people of all ages. May each person who came out to these events feel blessed when they passed thru these doors. Thanks again for all of your hard work, Ginny Kennedy

Deacon’s Corner In the April Deacon Corner, I listed questions for you to consider if you were nominated and asked to serve as a deacon. These questions which appeared in the Spring 2017 issue of The Deacon Magazine were offered to help you make the decision of accepting or declining the role of deacon. Since deacons are servants of the people and called to serve the Lord by conducting the caring ministry of the church, I would like to list some blessings deacons experience by serving others. BLESSINGS WE EXPERIENCE BY SERVING OTHERS Serving allows us to discover and develop our spiritual gifts. (1 Corinthians 12) Serving allows us to experience miracles. (John 2) Serving allows us to experience the joy and peace that comes from obedience. (1 Peter 4: 10–11) Serving helps us to be more like Jesus. (Matthew 25:40) Serving surrounds us with other Christians who can help us follow Jesus. (Hebrews 10: 24-25) Serving increases our faith. (Ephesians 3:20) If you would like to serve others in the role of deacon at Chester Baptist Church, please say yes if you are asked to serve in this capacity. Serving allows us to experience God’s presence in many ways. Closing Thought: God will put someone in our path who we can serve today. Let’s consider their needs and serve them gladly without reservation. Special Dates to Remember May 4th: Golf Outing to raise money for the Deacon Scholarship May 5th: Homebound Communion May 15th: Deacon’s Meeting July 17th: Deacon’s Meeting

Did you know that the Web of Hope meets here? Shivering in the cold night air outside her destroyed home all seem hopeless. The fire, or the flood, or the tornado, or the earthquake had taken it all away. At these times people need so little to feel better…to feel cared for and their tragedy acknowledged. This is the service the Red Cross provides with which most are familiar. But, quietly, on the third floor of the Richmond Red Cross headquarters building there is something happening that is out of the ordinary, very special, and very powerful in its impact on others. Literally tens of thousands of knitted, crocheted, and sewn items are gathered and packaged for those around the globe in need of a comforting and warming touch.

The “Web of Hope” is a “web” of about 300 volunteers from around the country who craft lap robes, quilts, caps, scarves, afghans, sweaters, sundresses (a popular item) and other garments. They send them to the Richmond Web team who packages these items. They go to places like Operation Gratitude (SAF organization), Samaritan’s Purse, McGuire Veterans Medical Center, Central and Eastern State Mental Hospitals, Christmas Mother and about 75 agencies, missions, and American Indian Reservations. These wonderfully soft, colorful, and useful gifts are sent to needy children and adults facing hard times and difficulties most of us, thankfully, can only imagine. The Web of Hope was founded in 1994 by Nancy Kettner and the idea was derived from the organization of the same name that came into being during WWII to provide knitted socks for soldiers. That organization disappeared after the war, but Nancy revived the idea with a new audience and a broader array of items. Linda Southward – who apparently did not knit herself – took over from Nancy, and inspired the Web volunteers for years. But Linda had cancer and on Linda’s deathbed she asked Gynanne Hahn to keep the Web of Hope alive. Gynanne and Vee Hancock have done just that and they co-lead the organization. Each month volunteers gather at the Red Cross Richmond offices to pack the goods and send them off to different organizations, all sorted by the profile of what is needed and by whom. The Red Cross pays for the shipping and basic supplies. Since 1994 over 155,000 items have been shipped. Each month about 600 to 800 items leave the Red Cross offices destined for those in need. There are knitting and crocheting groups in and around Richmond, but most of the contributions come from those 300 volunteers and “good Samaritans” around the state and the nation who make these items and send them directly to the Web of Hope in Richmond. Here is the output for the Month of March, 2019. Even if you do not knit or sew, you can help pack or you can donate yarn, an always needed commodity…or send a gift card from Walmart or ACMoore so more yarn can be bought. For more information, see the YouTube video called “Red Cross Volunteers in Action - The Web of Hope” or contact [email protected] or [email protected].
