The Service for the Lord’s Day Third Sunday of Easter ConFirmation Sunday

May 5, 2019 8:15, 9:30 & 11:00 a.m.

WE GATHER TO WORSHIP

Today we celebrate the Lord’s Supper. Gluten free wafers are available in the narthex and Jane Bell Gathering Space.

Greeting One: The Lord is risen! All: He is risen indeed! Alleluia! One: Let us prepare for worship. Preparation for Worship

Lord of life, submitting to death, you conquered the grave. By being lifted on a cross, you draw all peoples to you. By being raised from the dead, you restore to humanity all that we had lost through sin. Throughout these fifty days of Easter, we proclaim the marvelous mystery of death and resurrection. For all praise is yours, now and throughout eternity. Amen.

Today is the 3rd Sunday of Easter. This season of the church year goes by the name, Eastertide. It is the most joyous season of the church year. During Eastertide we remember the miracle of Easter and share the good news of redemption and salvation with all the world.

Prelude (8:15 & 9:30) Festival Sanctus Cathy Moklebust (b. 1958) WMPC Handbell Choir (11:00) Aria from Partita No. 4 in D Major, BWV 828 Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) Christian Welcome and Announcements

(8:15) Tracey Daniel (9:30) Gloria Johnson

Please pass the Friendship Register to your neighbor and include all requested information.

Call to Worship One: Let us extol the Lord who draws us up. All: We ask God for help, and God heals us. We offer God our souls, and God restores us. One: Let us sing praises to the Lord and give thanks in the name of God. All: God alone turns night to day, sadness to joy, and mourning into dancing. One: Let us worship the God who makes all things new! *Hymn 611 - Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee

HYMN TO JOY

*Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession Forgive our sins great God of love and mercy. We think we have all the power. We don’t. We act like we have all the answers. We don’t. We show-off our strength in our times of sadness and loneliness. But we aren’t so strong on our own. We pretend we don’t need you to guide and protect our lives. But we do. Hear our confession of our over reliance upon self-sufficiency. Hear our prayer, in the name of Jesus, that you might put us on good paths and give thanks to your holy name. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Psalm 30 forms the theological core of our worship today. An uplifting Psalm, the ancient Hebrew text describes this as a song of dedication. Posterity attributes these words to King David, one of the patriarchs of the Bible and most prolific authors of the Psalms.

The Presbyterian Church is part of a larger group of churches known as Reformed Churches. All Reformed Churches place Prayer of Confession near the center of worship because we believe that worship is a time of bringing our whole selves -even that which we would rather hide -- to God. God’s mercy in light of God’s love is declared as we claim the promise of Jesus Christ during the Assurance of Pardon.

in the manner of Christ

*Response Hymn 233 - stanza 3 LANCASHIRE Now let the heav’ns be joyful; let earth its song begin; the round world keep high triumph and all that is therein. Let all things seen and unseen their notes of gladness blend, for Christ the Lord has risen, our joy that has no end. WE PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD

Offertory Anthem (8:15) Ave Verum Corpus (Jesu, Word of God Incarnate) W. A. Mozart (1756-91)

(Sung in Latin) Jesu, Word of God incarnate, of the Virgin Mary born; on the cross thy sacred body, for us with nails was torn. Cleanse us by the blood and water streaming from thy pierced side. Feed us with thy body broken, now and in death’s agony.

(9:30) Alleluia! Christ Is Arisen

Sacrament of Baptism (8:15) Ella Singer (Confirmand) Old Testament Lesson - Psalm 30

Presentation of Tithes and Offerings

pew Bible, p. 478

arr. Nathan Zullinger (pub. 2018)

¡Aleluya! Cristo resucitó la madrugada del domingo. Run, faithful women, to the graveside, marvel, the stone is rolled away! Hear from the angel, “He is risen.” Christ goes before you all the way. Rise, Magdalena from your weeping; Christ stands before your very eyes. Quickly return to the disciples; bear the good news: “He is alive.”

(11:00) Christ Among Us

David Haas (pub. 2007)

Christ has no body now on earth but ours: Our hands are to be his hands, our feet are to be his feet, our eyes are now his eyes. Christ has no body now on earth but ours. Christ has no voice now on earth but ours: Our thoughts are to be his thoughts, our words are to be his words, our song is now his song. Christ has no voice now on earth but ours. Christ has no heart now on earth but ours: Our touch is to be his touch, our care is to be his care, our love is now his love. Christ has no heart now on earth but ours.

(11:00) A Time with Young Disciples Today is confirmation Sunday at White Memorial. Dozens of 8th graders have been on a confirmation journey this year learning about the Christian faith and about the practices of our church. Today is the culmination of this stage of the journey to faith for these 8th graders. At 11:00 a.m. they will declare their faith and are introduced as the newest members of our congregation. In our tradition we practice an “open table.” This means that all Christian people are welcome to receive Communion in our church. What is the reason behind this approach? Simply that it is not technically “our table.” It is the table of the Lord, and Jesus is the host of our sacramental meal of bread and cup. Just as Jesus welcomed all, so too we welcome all. Gift of Finest Wheat combines the hymn tunes BICENTENNIAL and BERTHIER. See Glory To God Hymns 523 and 527.

Following our time together, four-year-olds through first graders will meet Ebie Britt at the door near the baptismal font, to be joined by Diane Britt from the OnPoint service, for Worship Enrichment in L201.

Sermon - Mourning Turned to Dancing (8:15 & 9:30) Christopher Edmonston Myriads of Myriads (11:00) Chip Pope (11:00) Recognition of Confirmands (11:00) *Response Hymn 515 - I Come with Joy, stanzas 1 & 2 DOVE OF PEACE Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper Invitation to the Table Prayer of Thanksgiving Words of Institution Serving of Bread and Cup

8:15 & 11:00 - Communion will be served by intinction. The elders will stand at the four corners of the Sanctuary. Ushers will direct you from the side aisles to the station nearest you to receive the elements. Return to your pew by way of the center aisle. Those seated in the balcony and chancel will begin. Any who cannot come forward will be served in the pew. 9:30 - Communion will be served in the pews. Please hold each element until invited to partake together. As you pass the elements, remember that by the grace of God, Christ calls us and equips each of us to minister to one other.

Music During Distribution (8:15 & 9:30) Gift of Finest Wheat

arr. Michael Helman (pub. 1998)

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

*All who are able may stand.

*Affirmation of Faith from the PCUSA Study Catechism One: What is God’s purpose for our lives? All: God wills that we should live by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, for the love of God, and in the communion of the Holy Spirit. One: How do we live by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ? All: We are not our own. We have been bought with a price. The Lord Jesus Christ loved us and gave himself for us. We entrust ourselves completely to his care, giving thanks each day for his wonderful goodness. One: How do we live for the love of God? All: We love because God first loved us. Amazed by grace, we live for the Lord who died and rose again, triumphant over death, for our sakes. Therefore, we take those around us to heart, especially those in need, knowing that Christ died for them no less than for us. One: How do we understand the love and power of God? All: Through Jesus Christ. In his life of compassion, his death on the cross, and his resurrection from the dead, we see how vast is God’s love for the world — a love that is ready to suffer for our sakes, yet so strong that nothing will prevail against it. WE GO IN GOD’S NAME *Hymn 157 - I Danced in the Morning

The flowers in the chancel this morning are the wedding flowers of Sterling Barksdale Battle and John Bryan Stilley, III, whose marriage was celebrated yesterday. They are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Mrs. Jacqueline Miller Robins, Mr. and Mrs. Turner Westray Battle, Mrs. Jacquelyn McDaniel Iler, Mrs. Margie Lewis Stilley, Mr. R. Sherwood Robins and Mrs. Mary Gwen Robins Schaffernoth. Sterling is the daughter of Carol and Richard Battle, and granddaughter of Jim Robins III.

LORD OF THE DANCE

*Charge and Benediction *Chiming of the Trinity

The worship service ends with the Chiming of the Trinity. Please be mindful of those who remain to listen to the postlude.

*Postlude - Good Christian Friends, Rejoice and Sing! arr. Michael Burkhardt (b. 1957) ***

*Assurance of Pardon *Passing of the Peace
