President’s Message

As a business professional (and owner) the most important thing you can learn is that building relationships is not just about one visit or handing someone your business card. Just like one dinner date doesn’t insure that you now have a place in a person’s life, clients are not always achieved by just one visit or call; that’s where Chamber membership enters the picture.

As an active member of the Chamber, I have seen my business grow through my work on various Chamber committees. Social media tools like Facebook have added a new dimension to the way we connect: but never underestimate the importance of good old fashioned face-to-face contact. Take time each month to check the Chamber calendar and see what events you can fit into your plans. That personal interaction does matter and is well worth the time. Thank you to all that were a part of our OWN Luncheon. Many of you filled tables with clients and peers: what a great way to solidify both

your personal and professional connections! A special thank you goes to James & Sons Fine Jewelers for their sponsorship and generous raffle donation. I’m sure the lucky lady that won that necklace would echo our gratitude! Thank you to all of our sponsors. Event sponsorships are a huge part of our Chamber events and we appreciate your participation. I hope that all attendees were inspired to go forward and embrace their challenges in a positive way. Be sure to make time building business relationships each month. The Chamber has a couple noteworthy events you’ll want to put on your calendar for May and June. Our Chamber is partnering with the Homer Township and Lemont Chambers for networking event at Ruffled Feathers Golf Club on Wednesday, May 7 at 11:30. Your time is valuable. Everyone has to eat lunch so making connections during lunch is a productive use of that time. Mimi’s Café is hosting a unique Business After Hours on June 12 that features a wine tasting. Enjoy a glass of wine and spend some time widening your client base. The weather is warming up and our Annual Golf Outing and Fine Art

Fair Committees are well into their planning. Consider sponsoring our Golf Outing – there are a number of sponsor opportunities available. The Golf Outing Committee has some creative thinkers at work so join us for golf and don’t be surprised if a “SuperHero” challenges your golf skills! Be sure to let your artist friends know we have openings for artists to reserve a booth at our Fine Art Fair. Are you looking to get involved in the community? We’re looking for sponsors for this event. Our sponsor donations help us organize and promote the Fine Art Fair. We appreciate your contribution at any level. One final thought, remember to shop Chamber members as you plan those summer barbecues and attend those special occasions. Chamber members will appreciate your loyalty! Here’s hoping your summer months begin with warm and fun-filled days!

We officially welcome summer to Orland Park during Memorial Day Weekend. The village’s Centennial Park Aquatic Center will debut for the 2014 season and we will honor and remember all fallen heroes at the village’s annual Memorial Day Ceremony. Everyone is invited to join us at the 1 p.m. ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at the Village Center, 14700 South Ravinia Avenue. See the village’s website for a full list of the many upcoming special events. Progress on the Illinois Department of Transportation’s widening of LaGrange Road continues and IDOT and its contractors are working steadily to complete this much needed improvement through the center of town. The village is doing its part to keep the community informed of pending lane closures and other announcements so

Mayor’s News and Notes

Happy spring! The inaugural Irish Music Trolley, offered the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day, was a big success. Four Orland Park eateries coordinated their Irish music shows with free trolley service provided among them. A few hundred people rode the trolley and gave rave reviews. We look forward to adding this to the village’s cultural offerings for next year.

we can all work together to minimize the project’s impact on local businesses. Find the latest project announcements on the village’s website at orlandpark.org. Winter’s departure always leaves its calling card, namely potholes. The village’s pothole hotline is up and running at 708/403-5010. Call in the location of potholes or report them online on the village’s website at orlandpark.org.

awareness campaign to get the word out to area seniors to be aware of people who are trying to victimize them. Seniors are targeted because they’re home during the day, they oftentimes want to talk and they’re willing to comply with “authority” figures. All solicitors going door to door in the village must first apply at and be screened by the Orland Park Police Department. If a solicitor comes to your home or business not displaying an official solicitor’s badge, immediately notify the police department. If you see a suspicious vehicle in your neighborhood, call the police. If you see an unfamiliar vehicle at a senior neighbor’s home, knock on the door and ask if everything is okay.

The latest edition of Village of Orland Park IN-FOCUS is airing on Comcast, U-Verse and on the village’s YouTube channel at youtube.com/ VillageofOrlandPark. Hosted by Trustee Jim Dodge, this show is a public safety round table with Trustee Dan Calandriello, chair of the village’s Public Safety Committee, and Police Chief Tim McCarthy. It’s an interesting discussion and if you don’t catch it on cable, watch it on YouTube. A huge topic among police agencies across the country and throughout the Chicagoland area is ruse burglaries, with criminals targeting seniors. Ruse burglary is when criminals try to distract people from their homes so an accomplice can enter another door and steal cash, jewelry and other items.

The police department also recommends getting the color, make and model of the vehicle driven by someone knocking at your door. Remind seniors to never, ever let strangers into their home and to not accompany strangers outside without locking the house or having a family member is attending the door. Read more about how you can help your senior family members and friends at orlandpark.org.

All-American Feast: 5 Tips to a Safer Summer Cookout

With cold drinks, sweet treats and grills at the ready, the holidays of summer provide a perfect opportunity for a festive outdoor party. But practicing proper food safety is a must. With hot temperatures and the increased potential for crosscontamination, picnics bring the possibility of foodborne illness and exposure to several cancercausing compounds. Follow these tips from Eileen Conneely, a registered dietitian from Palos Health & Fitness Center, to help you celebrate the summer

cookout season with sizzle, spice and everything nice.

help keep carcinogens on the sidelines.

Keep it Clean Make sure your grill is clean. Scrub grates with hot, soapy water before every use. And always wash your hands before, during and after grilling. Grilling is an excellent way to cook healthy and eliminate unwanted fat, however, keeping your grill clean and cooking meats thoroughly is critical to preventing such food-borne bacteria as Salmonella and E. coli. Grilling also can produce two specific cancer-causing compounds, heterocyclic amine (HCA) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). While vegetables and other foods typically do not create these compounds, grilling meats at high temperatures can. Trimming fat, marinating and grilling at lower temperatures can

Cook Thoroughly but Don’t Overcook Always cook picnic favorites like hamburgers and bratwursts to 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Steaks should be cooked to 145 degrees and chicken breasts to 165 degrees. A meat thermometer is the only reliable way to ensure foods are safe to eat. While it’s important to cook poultry and ground meats thoroughly, be careful not to overcook any meat. Well-done or burnt meats contain higher levels of HCAs.

“News” From Orland Township

Marinate Researchers have determined marinating meat prior to grilling, even for just a few minutes can reduce the amount of HCA by 90 percent or more. It’s believed the marinade forms a protective

Prevent Flare-ups Flames from grill flare-ups cause the formation of both HCAs and PAHs. Keep an eye on your grill, and turn meats frequently to minimize the risk of flare-ups. Keep Perishables Cold Perishable items need to be put back in the cooler, or refrigerator if available, after no more than two hours. Make it one hour if the temperature is 90 degrees or above.
