CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle records a #CUdifference testimonial during the GAC with Raffo Wimsett, an operations specialist from Commonwealth CU, Frankfort, Ky.

#CUNAGAC

Since the end of the conference, CUNA has:

In February, CUNA held the credit union industry’s largest advocacy event with nearly 5,000 credit union advocates from across the country convening in Washington, D.C. Keynote speakers, dozens of presentations, and hundreds of meetings on Capitol Hill highlighted the advocacy focus of this year’s Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC).

• Led the way on hundreds of letters sent to FASB on its CECL proposal • Facilitated more than 8,000 comment letters to the NCUA on its FOM proposal; and • Helped drive a letter from three-quarters of the House to the CFPB on exempting CUs from onerous regulations.

2016 GAC Focus • Emphasize and celebrate our CU difference • Remind regulators we’re not banks, so stop treating us like banks • Reignite our presence in the marketplace; become disruptors on behalf of our members It’s no coincidence that CUNA was able to leverage the legwork of its advocacy army—which hiked the hill to meet with hundreds of Congress members during GAC—to notch a number of important advocacy wins in the days and weeks following the event.

One-On-One:

Lauren Davis 2016 CUNA GAC Crasher

What made you apply to CRASH?

The opportunity to travel to D.C., meet amazing people, and advocate for credit unions was simply too amazing to pass up. I heard so many testimonies from previous crashers, saying that this experience was a pivotal moment in their career, so I knew it was something I wanted to apply for.

Was there a specific speaker that left an impact?

There were so many amazing speakers. However, Jim Nussle really grabbed my attention when he spoke about how credit unions need to start becoming more disruptive in the financial industry. It’s time that we start shaking things up and I wholeheartedly agreed with his message.

How was your experience joining your peers from Louisiana during Hill visits with the Legislatives?

It was so awesome! We were fortunate to meet with the majority of our representatives during Hill visits. The entire experience was so surreal. I really enjoyed witnessing the entire process.

What was your biggest takeaway from the CRASH Program?

Our crasher schedule was packed with so many sessions. One of my biggest takeaways was to start taking more risks and not be afraid of failure. We heard from credit union professionals who were very candid about both their successes and failures. Those testimonies definitely brought authenticity to the program and challenged us to think of everything we do as learning opportunities.

What was your biggest takeaway from networking with other Crashers?

One of my biggest takeaways from networking was that there are a lot of young professionals who experience the same things that I do. We all share similar stories and were able to relate and empathize with each other. Now, I have contacts all over the country who I feel completely comfortable reaching out to if I ever need anything. We showed up as strangers but parted as friends by the end of the week.

Did your experience meet your expectations?

I had no idea what to expect going into this, but I was at least hoping that it would be an overall positive experience that would be impact my career. Based on those expectations, I can say that the experience far exceeded them. It was an invaluable opportunity that I’ll never forget.

Anything else worth mentioning?

I was already a big fan of credit unions but I have to admit, I drank the credit union kool-aid and became even more passionate about the movement while in D.C. I would strongly recommend applying to any young professional who is considering crashing. It’s an experience that you won’t regret!

CUNA President/CEO Addresses Louisiana CUs During LCUL’s Large Asset Idea Exchange

Jim Nussle, Credit Union National Association (CUNA) President/CEO, addressed an audience of Louisiana credit unions during LCUL’s Large Asset Idea Exchange in Baton Rouge. Nussle says that the national trade association will be focusing on a new strategic plan, modernizing the national advocacy approach, delivering advocacy results, and 2016 by-law modernization. His message on grassroots efforts was clear: advocacy is an information driver and an even better business decision for credit unions. “We’ve been playing a good defense, but where is the offense? If we want to be more disruptive in the financial marketplace, we need to do a better job telling our story,” commented Nussle. “Victory is when we are growing in assets and in membership. That is my challenge.” The Idea Exchange, which includes credit unions with $100 million+ in assets, kicked off with Kathi Gill, former CEO of Neighbors FCU, leading a peer-topeer roundtable. Attendees discussed hot topics such as industry disruptors, economic forces, regulatory issues, non-interest income, and organizational structure, particularly the trend of creating an e-commerce department or something similar in order to stay relevant. “The League’s role in helping create interaction and networking among Louisiana credit unions is a high priority, particularly those who share the same challenges, threats, and opportunities. We are excited to host this program for larger asset credit unions and hope they leave with great thought-provoking takeaways,” commented Anne Cochran, LCUL President/CEO.

ASI FCU Wins National Desjardin Financial Education Award ASI FCU and sister non-profit A Shared Initiative, Inc. were honored with the 2nd Place overall Desjardins Adult Financial Education Award. CUNA created the Desjardins program to recognize leadership within the credit union movement on behalf of financial literacy. The BioDistrict location features interactive tellers & financial advisors and a green roof system. “Expanding our presence in New Orleans is part of our corporate strategy,” Dawn Harris, Campus Federal’s President and CEO, said. “Locating in the BioDistrict area was a natural fit for us given our longstanding relationship with the LSU Health Sciences Center and the University Medical Center. We will be positioned to better serve our existing members and be more accessible to new businesses in this developing corridor.” The Campus Federal BioDistrict location incorporated several environmentally friendly design components including a green roof system and porous concrete. The roof, which is now nearly fully vegetated, offers many benefits including increasing energy efficiency and reducing storm water run-off.

LCUL President Recognizes the Work, Success of Louisiana CUs in Latest Op-Ed LCUL submitted a ‘Letter to the Editor’ to media outlets around the state on behalf of League President Anne Cochran. The op-ed submission was heavily supported by the recent economic impact study we conducted. In the letter, Cochran recognizes credit unions for exceeding the purpose for which they were created. They fulfill the role of economic driver and

community leader while continuing to supply accessible financial services to individuals of all income levels in communities throughout Louisiana. The goal was to have the op-ed published in advance of the state legislative session. Click here to read in full.
