Micah House After School Program

2014/2015 Annual Report

wELCOME Micah House After School Program

Micah House is a faith-based afterschool outreach of the Trinity Community Foundation. Since its beginnings, in 2001, Micah House has been making an impact on the next generation of Redlands youth. Our two locations, Oxford Drive and Chapel Street, are strategically located in neighborhoods with first generation english language learners. The challenges faced by the families in these neighborhoods are tremendous. Our goal is to mobilize volunteers and provide programs that focus on the educational, social, emotional and spiritual needs of children and youth from 1st through 12th grade. These programs include homework help, tutoring, literacy support, art, recreational activities, computer training, character building, and college preparation. Children also participate in Story-Time which includes a story from the bible or a person of inspirational faith.

Dr. David J. Wilson Executive Director, Micah House Trinity Community Foundation

Developing strong literacy skills is at the core of what we do at Micah House. Teaching our kids to read, then teaching them to LOVE to read is part of the foundation of Micah House.

When homework seems hard, having a dedicated volunteer is a great help. This year Micah House helped over 100 students from 1st-12th grades increase their skills, their confidence and their grades. 2

Our Name

Micah House got its name from the Bible verse found in Micah 6:8. "He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you; but to do justice, and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God?" By focusing on the spiritual and educational needs of our students we strive to put this verse into practice in very practical ways.

Literacy

Developing strong literacy skills is at the core of what we do at Micah House. Teaching our kids to read, then teaching them to LOVE to read is one of the secrets to the successes of the Micah House program.

Literacy is not just about reading books, but about building stong skills using technology. Students are given opportunities to practice computer literacy each week, ensuring they can keep up with peers who have computers at home.

Part of doing well IN school is feeling good ABOUT school. In partnership with the City of Redlands, local businesses and community volunteers, last year Micah House gave away 1,000+ back packs filled with school supplies.

The work of Micah House is life changing and affects the whole family. When one child starts our program and begins to receive help with homework and literacy, siblings soon follow. We are able invest in Redlands families long term and to create a place where all siblings receive valuable services throughout their academic career. 6
