Summer Brunch

Middle School Mission Trip This year the middle schoolers of Southwood Lutheran Church had the opportunity to visit Minnesota for four days. During our trip we had the chance to mix serving responsibilities with a couple fun outings. On the first evening we experienced the excitement of an MLB game . . . the Twins vs Red Sox. The next day we served at the local food bank, Second Harvest. While working we managed to pack a total of 6,038 lbs. of food. Our group then proceeded to a large farm. At the farm, we gardened, pulled weeds, and cared for the animals. Serving was an amazing experience for everyone. Even while working in the hot sun, we smiled and joked. We functioned like a team on and off the job. We suddenly had a sense of serving, not only in the community we were visiting, but within our own group. Life lessons were discussed during our prayer groups. When people are in tough situations, they may find themselves feeling like they are drowning. During our daily readings, we learned about Jonah. He seemed extremely selfish and always tried to escape the path that God was trying to lead him down. In these situations, God would take measures to nudge him back. Jonah was drowning but God saved him. The story of Jonah got my attention because we are all going down our own paths in life. No matter how high the mountain we climb, no matter how hard we fall, we need to remember that God designed this special unique path to test our faithfulness. During the tough times in life: will I embrace my faith, or turn away from it? God gave us guidance to serve within the food bank and farm in Minnesota. While on the serving journey in Minnesota we also served each other, and our inner spirit. Not only did we discover that Minnesota is incredibly beautiful and that helping people gives you the best feeling, but we reflected on ourselves through the testament.
