WE DON’T JUST MAKE WORK GLOVES WE ENGINEER PROTECTIVE ENVIRONMENTS FOR YOUR HANDS One of The Most Hazardous Jobs in the World

Maximum Protection from Injuries

In mining operations there is very little room for error. Workers are often operating in confined spaces, with hazardous surroundings, and limited visibility. Since mining involves the extraction of valuable minerals from the surrounding rocks, the extraction equipment must be large and powerful. Even hand-held powered and non-powered tools are often heavier, larger, and more dangerous than the tools found in any other industry.

At HexArmor®, we know that the hand is one of the most complex parts of your body– the movement of the tendons, bones, tissues, and nerves allows you to grip and do a wide variety of complex jobs.

In the past 20 years, mining safety has come to the forefront. Hundreds of studies on accidents and incidents have been done in an effort to reduce the rate and severity of injuries associated with mining. A recent U.S. safety survey found nearly 48 percent of all miners experienced a severe hand injury that required medical attention at some time during their mining careers. More than a quarter of mining workplace injuries are open wounds. Almost one-third of mining injuries are to the hand, second only to eye injuries. Nearly 25% of hand injuries were cuts and punctures, while impact was responsible for 20% of all hand injuries. Other hand injuries included machinery related (12%), grinders (5%), knives (4%), welding equipment (4%), other power tools (4%), hand tools (3%), other tools (4%), and fixed plant and machinery (2%).

HexArmor® designers have worked hand in hand with safety experts from the leaders in the mining and oil and gas industries. The result of these partnerships was to engineer gloves and body protection with the capability to deliver the perfect balance of exceptional protection, dexterity, and grip. While competitive work gloves provide some protection against mining impact injuries, research revealed that many of the injuries were cuts and punctures. Existing gloves offered little protection against these often painful and debilitating injuries.

Whether you are servicing a conveyor belt, pulling cable rope, hauling tools, patching tires, or maintaining equipment, your hands and body can be exposed to a wide variety of cut, puncture, and abrasion hazards. While many PPE products in the market try to address other prominent hand injuries, such as smashes and contusions, their products fall short in the area of cut and puncture protection.

MAXIMUM cut PROTECTION WITH DEXTERITY AND GRIP Protecting the Human Hand in the Tough, Hazardous World of Mining HexArmor® gloves are constructed with superior and proven materials and technology. The foundation of HexArmor® mining gloves and body protection is SuperFabric® brand material. The innovative configuration of SuperFabric® provides resistance to lacerations, punctures, and slashes like no other material in the industry today.

Competitive Fabrics Don’t Always Cut It Where Protection Is Needed Most

The perfect technical and protective fabric for the job at hand: HexArmor® with SuperFabric® maximizes resistance against cuts, slashes, and punctures, while providing a superior foundation for maintaining essential dexterity and grip.

*Testing done through all materials on palm, including added patches

While common cut-resistant products, with blends of yarns such as Kevlar®, Dyneema®, or Spectra® give some minimal protection from straight edged cut hazards, they don’t offer sufficient protection from variable hazards such as knives, jagged rock and shale, metal burrs, wires, or slivers commonly found in mining production environments. HexArmor® gloves exceed the industry’s highest testing standards– ISEA Level 5, giving you the protection you need most, where you need it. No other competitive glove comes close.

PREVENTING DEEP TISSUE DAMAGE AND WOUNDS Many lacerations start out as a puncture. A sharp edge, corner, burr, braided cable wire, or other protruding hazards penetrate the glove and scrape or cut skin. With synthetic leather, Kevlar®, or cotton gloves, the hazard will poke through the surface of the glove and then tear laterally to create a laceration. While a glove may say it has ‘cut resistance,’ it often lacks the puncture protection to stop lacerations.

THE NEXT GENERATION OF impact protection: ir-x® impact exoskeleton™ The most advanced HexArmor® impact resistance comes with all the dexterity, all the comfort, and more protection than offered by any other impact-protective glove on the market. Our proprietary IR-X® technology shields our gloves with a full back-of-hand exoskeleton, so every joint and knuckle is protected from debilitating blows. In addition to being 42% taller than competitive impact guards, IR-X® smash guards are purpose-built to deflect the force of sudden impacts away from the impact point, rather than transferring force directly to the hand. This unique characteristic is what sets IR-X® safety levels higher than the competition, and its flexibility is what makes the IR-X® Impact Exoskeleton™ more comfortable and more dexterous than any other impact-resistant technology available.

HexArmor IR-X® Impact Guards HexArmor’s new impact shielding materials protect against serious and painful impact injuries.

ASTM D2632-01 Resilience by Vertical Rebound in Testing

GGT5® 4021X with IR-X®

Resiliency of a material can be described as its ability to absorb and release energy elastically, rather than simply transferring energy directly through the material. The lower the tested resiliency value, the more energy is transferred through the material and into the hand during an impact blow. The test results show that IR-X® products possess a significantly higher resiliency value than the nearest competitor, at 25% resiliency. The lowest competitor offered less than half the resiliency value of the IR-X® products.

About the Test The ASTM D2632 “covers the determination of impact resilience of solid rubber from measurement of the vertical rebound of a dropped mass.” Testing was modified so that a complete material composition was tested on each sample (ie: TPR + foam + lining). The results are given in a resilience value which is “determined as a ratio of rebound height to drop height of a metal plunger of prescribed mass and shape which is allowed to fall on a rubber specimen.” The ASTM method measures the amount of energy that is transferred through impact.

TESTED LIKE NO OTHER GLOVE IN THE INDUSTRY TODAY To ensure the protection and quality of HexArmor® mining gloves and body protection, we test them like no other products in the industry today. Other manufacturers try to inflate their scores by using CE ratings and claiming they are the “world-wide standard.” We feel this is misleading. By validating cut, puncture, and tear-resistance to the industry’s highest testing standards, we give you the confidence that your gloves will live up to the superior protection and quality HexArmor® is known for.

Compare The Best with The Rest: ANSI/ISEA (ASTM) VS. CE Cut Ratings

TM

TM

Cut-resistance is a function of a glove’s material composition and thickness. There are a number of testing protocols available to measure the cut-resistance and protective qualities of mining gloves and body protection. At HexArmor we put our products to the ultimate test with ANSI/ISEA 105-2005 testing protocols. This test involves the interpretation of data obtained from putting varying pressure (weights) on a standardized razor-type blade and recording the distance the blade travels (at a constant speed) before cutting through. (Our competitors often use CE Ratings to boost the perception of cut resistance with data that just doesn’t match-up with tough, ANSI/ISEA ratings.) Our method of testing, with stringent ASTM 1790-04 test methods, applies a more difficult protocol that makes is harder to achieve higher ratings. Many gloves on the market will rate around a Level 1-2 on the ASTM F-1790 test (around 400 grams), which won’t protect workers from sharp edges, burrs, or cable wire pokes. The limitations of the synthetic leather, and in some cases Kevlar®, that makes up the palm of most gloves is that they offer little cut or puncture resistance. They may receive a ‘cut-rating’ on the industry standard, but will fail in the field when exposed to normal work.

“I was splicing a belt when the knife jumped. If it had not been for the HexArmor® chaps, I may not be walking.”

- Brian B., Australian Mine Worker

By testing our gloves against the most rigorous standards available in the industry today, we are able to engineer a better performing glove, with a greater level of protection, for you and your hands.

TESTED IN THE REAL WORLD – PROTECTION WHERE IT COUNTS Putting HexArmor® mining gloves and body protection through extensive and stringent laboratory tests was essential in determining and validating a high level of cut and puncture resistance. The ultimate test comes at the hands of workers that use our gloves every day. Over the past two years, HexArmor® has tested our technical mining gloves and body protection on the job to verify their total protective capability. As a result of this testing, we are confident that we have developed the best mining gloves and body protection on the market today.

Hexarmor® Engineers a World of PPE Solutions for Global Mining and Maintenance Operations Mining is a global enterprise that supplies the precious and base metals that drive, power, and build the world’s largest industries. These mining operations can be divided into three basic types: underground mining, open pit mining, and strip mining. While the methods of mining and products that are mined in each operation may differ, production operations and the hazards of maintaining production are relatively the same.

CONVEYOR BELT SPLICING: ONE OF MANY HAZARDOUS MINING MAINTENANCE TASKS

A NEW LEVEL OF PROTECTION AGAINST PUNCTURES AND LACERATIONS

Engineering the right type of PPE for mine workers and maintenance crews is critical in keeping ores and base metals moving efficiently and productively around the world. In almost all mining operations, high capacity industrial belt conveyors are used to transport ores throughout the mine or production facility. The belts in these conveyors are subjected to tons of rough ores and metals each day, and continually require maintenance to splice frayed belt pieces back together. Splicing is hazardous work for maintenance crews.

HexArmor® designers and engineers answered the call of a major mining company that had been experiencing a high level of recordable injuries (punctures and lacerations) in its belt conveyor splicing operations. After conducting an on site review of the company’s maintenance operations, and working directly with the company’s HexArmor® 9911 Chap safety committee, HexArmor® engineered a conveyor belt chap designed to deflect the cutting blades and knives used in belt splicing maintenance. The result: belt conveyor maintenance and installation injuries were completely eliminated after the introduction of the HexArmor® chap. The cut, puncture, and abrasion resistant 9911 chap provided mine maintenance workers with full front and back leg coverage plus a double-layer knee patch to reduce wear in specific splicing task positions. The 9911 Chap was developed with extra room in the thigh area to offer easy movement and comfort, not to mention the chaps are cooler and lighter than the leather alternative products. Another benefit is that the chaps are fully washable, lowering replacement costs and improving hygiene.

Conveyor belt maintenance

One inch thick belts (sometimes constructed with fiber and steel belts) have to be sliced with two-handed box cutters before being spliced back together with steel staples. Maintenance crews are often positioned on their knees during these dangerous cutting operations and must pull knife blades directly toward them, not the most ideal work environment. Recordable injuries from deep punctures and lacerations are often serious - and in some cases, life-threatening.

Hand and Arm Protection In addition to the 9911 Chaps, HexArmor® also provides the mining industry with a wide range of PPE from protective gloves, arm guards, jackets, and aprons. Today, in practically every type of mining operation around the world you’ll find HexArmor® at work keeping production moving more efficiently, effectively, and safely.

Mining Industry Application: Truck Shop Fly metal Wherever you have mining operations, you have huge mining trucks moving materials around. To service these giant trucks and keep them running at maximum efficiency, you have truck shops on site. Workers in mining truck shops are exposed to a number of hazards. HexArmor® gloves, chaps, jackets, and cut-resistant aprons protect them from the hazards of the job.

Armoring Truck Shop Workers Against Fly Metal Injuries

One worker at a mine site in Arizona had a piece of fly metal miss his femoral artery by one-eighth of an inch. If that artery had been injured, the worker would have bled to death.

The haul trucks that serve mining operations are vital to the industry. Therefore, maintaining the trucks that work in open pit mines or run in deep coal, copper, and gold mines is an absolute necessity. Unplanned downtime is not an option, so mining operations must have people working in on-site truck shops to perform ongoing vehicle maintenance. When truck shop workers are repairing, adjusting, or dismantling trucks, shovels, and other equipment, they use hammers to remove the pins holding the giant shovels in place. These pins are made of metal, and they can weaken over time. Often, when the pins are hit with a hammer, they explode and become shrapnel that can pierce a worker’s body. This hazard is referred to as fly metal. To protect themselves against fly metal, truck shop mechanics wear HexArmor® cut-resistant body protection such as aprons, chaps, jackets, and arm guards. The SuperFabric® brand material used to make these products provides the highest levels of cut and industrial puncture resistance available on the PPE market. Fly metal is such a common occurrence in truck shop applications that some workers, like the one pictured here, end up with pieces of metal permanently lodged under their skin. This may not seem as dangerous as, for example, getting crushed by a 400 ton mover. However, when a pin explodes, the fly metal goes everywhere – into workers’ stomachs, hands, arms, etc. Not only is this dangerous, but it has also been near-fatal.

This guy has so much fly metal in his hand, it has become magnetic.

Keep your truck shop workers safe with HexArmor® hand, arm, and body protection. It deflects and prevents injuries from fly metal. Our PPE solutions are designed to help your employees work safely, comfortably, and efficiently, so they can keep the trucks your mines depend on up and running at all times. Ask your HexArmor® solutions specialist how to get started.
