STUDENT HIGHLIGHT

Name: Rev. Carolyn D. Tatem Educational Background: B.S. in Information Systems from Morgan State University and M.S. in Information Systems from The American University. Degree Pursuing: Master of Divinity Occupation: Business Teacher How is Denver Seminary equipping you for God’s call on your life? Denver Seminary is helping me to grow stronger in doctrine and stronger theologically. What most people don’t know about Carolyn: She is the author of 4 books. Marriage from A to Z (Book and Workbook), Marriage from A to Z for Singles and Embracing Excellence Devotional. She has been married for twenty years to William Tatem, and together they have three children. They both have a passion for marriage and have spent 15 years ministering to couples, particularly newlywed couples. As a result, her first book, Marriage from A to Z book was birthed to help give couples practical and biblical principles for marriage. Her second book is a work book and was created to compliment the main book. While ministering to couples, God inspired her to start sharing His principles concerning marriage with ladies who wanted to learn about marriage “before” they got married so her third book was created; Marriage from A to Z for Singles. Her latest book was written in 2015 titled; Embracing Excellence. This book is a 31-Day devotional and journey through Proverbs 31. She loves writing and has started working on her 5th book. In addition, just about every week, she writes a post on marriage/relationships on the Marriage From A to Z blog at www.marriagefromatoz.org. Anything else you would like to share: She serves as the Director of the Queen Esther Ministry (A discipleship program for women) at the First Baptist Church of Glenarden. This program was birthed 16 years ago, and she was a part of the original team. First, she served as the assistant director and about four years later, she was asked to be the director. She has been the director for twelve years and counting. Queen Esther is a growing ministry and has ministered to over 2000 women in the DMV. Women come to be developed and commit to attending 3 (15 week) sessions to be discipled. Upon completion of the program there is a graduation. The target age group is 18-35 however, women beyond 35 are welcome. It has been amazing to witness the changes that God makes in the lives of his women. As the director, she currently oversees close to 400 women in the program which makes up 18 Queen Esther classes, about 50 facilitators, assistants and

volunteers. What an honor! Serving as the director of the Queen Esther Ministry allowed her to be selected for the ordination process at the First Baptist Church of Glenarden. On April 28, 2018, she was ordained as a Reverend and served in various ways in and outside of the church. About two years ago, she was invited to be a part of the LifeWay Women’s Ministry Trainer Team. She traveled with the team and spoke on various leadership/women related topics at LifeWay’s You Lead and State Conferences.

LEADER & FACULTY HIGHLIGHT

Convocation 2018 By: Lynn Cohick, Provost & Dean “I’m home” was one of the first thoughts going through my mind as I drove from Dulles to the Denver Seminary extension site campus in Glenarden, MD. In the late 1980s, my husband, Jim, and I lived in Centreville, VA, and he worked in Georgetown. Our son was born in Fairfax Hospital. On this Thursday in midOctober, the traffic was thick, and my speed was slow enough to enjoy looking at the lovely fall foliage. I felt happy and wondered what to expect at the Convocation dinner the following day. “I’m impressed” was my thought as I walked through the Ministry Center. The rooms are spacious, the library well equipped, and the church staff so warm and welcoming. I met some of the board members, and was blessed by their knowledge and their passion for seminary education. My admiration grew as I enjoyed dinner with the students. I was humbled by their incredible dedication to follow God’s calling to serve his church, even at such great cost of time and resources. “I want to come back!” was my lasting impression as the night finished. After hearing a few stories, I wanted to know more about the women and men God is equipping for Kingdom work. I saw in them a passion for the Lord, a hunger for wisdom, and a spirit of perseverance that convinced me – God is in this place! Thank you, DC students, for welcoming me in your midst, and for testifying to me of God’s mighty strength that sustains you and your ministries.

Church History at the DC Extension By: Aaron Johnson, CH500 Professor This was my first time teaching at the Denver Seminary, DC Extension. Thirteen students and I met at sunrise on Friday morning for a marathon day of Church History. By Saturday at 6PM, we had surveyed about 1800 years of what it looked like for the Gospel to move into new cultures, and how God was faithful to renew the Church despite our unfaithfulness. Because it’s a blended course, we’ll finish up the semester in the online classroom, where we are already having thought-provoking conversations about what we learned during our Face-to-Face intensive. I was so impressed with the hospitality of our students and their hunger for learning. All-day intensives require perseverance and stamina, and our students, even in the last hours were engaged in discussion and inquiry. Personally and professionally, this has been one of the most satisfying educational experiences I’ve had the privilege to engage. Because the students’ life experiences and culture are so different from mine, I felt constantly stretched by their questions and their perspectives. I was also encouraged by our common faith and shared affection for our Savior. I’m so grateful for our Denver Seminary family in Maryland, and hope to have this opportunity again.

CHAPEL

**November 30 from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

Pastor John K. Jenkins, Sr.

Pastor John K. Jenkins Sr. has been preaching the Good News since he was licensed as a minister at 15 years old. From an early age, he developed a love for the Lord and felt a call to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. His pastoral journey began in February 1987 when he was called to serve as the senior pastor at Union Bethel Church in King George, Va. Nearly three years of pastoring at Union Bethel proved to be the training ground for his upcoming assignment. In October of 1988, Pastor Jenkins learned of the passing of his pastor and mentor, Dr. John W. Johnson, from his home church at the First Baptist Church of Glenarden. One year after Dr. Johnson's passing, Pastor Jenkins returned to First Baptist to become the seventh shepherd. The fruit of his biblically based teaching is evidenced in the growth of church membership from 500 to more than 10,000. Today, an average 11,000 people attend weekly Sunday services between two campuses located in Landover and Upper Marlboro, Md. A tech-savvy minister, Pastor Jenkins embraces technology to reach souls in a global way. All four of First Baptist's Sunday worship services, Tuesday night Bible study and church events are streamed live via the church website.

Convocation 2018-19 DC Extension Hurricane Florence, may have altered the official convening date for our Washington DC, extension site Convocation, but that did not stop us from having an amazing experience. Convocation in Latin means ”to call/come together", while the Greek translation (ἐκκλησία ekklēsia) refers to a group of people formally assembled for a special purpose, mostly ecclesiastical or academic. Seminarians, along with family and friends formally assembled for the start of the academic year. We were blessed to have been offered words of encouragement by both our Seminary President, Dr. Mark Young and his wife, Priscilla Young, along with our new Provost, Dr. Lynn Cohick. Many Seminarians took part in the service. However, when, MDiv. student, Juanetta Swann stepped to the podium, she offered context to the day on behalf of all DC extension site students, by charging the faculty to both offer and “maintain a life characterized as an aroma pleasing to God, living in reasonable service to Him, as a result of having been pruned, purified and polished as an image-bearer of the Lord Jesus Christ.” As Dr. Young, approached the podium, he surveyed the room and proudly applauded the number of new students enrolled in the Fall Semester. He offered insight into his yearly process for considering the direction for the Seminary. In the fall of 2016, he considered a three year direction, which would cover the 2017-2019 academic years,. He decided upon an affirmation that is rooted in his personal worship experience, a fivehundred year old, pre-reformation, threefold affirmation: “ Christ has died; Christ is risen; and Christ will come again." Dr. Young admonished, all in attendance to recite this affirmation along with him. As he framed his talk through the lens of the affirmation, he reminded all in attendance that this is the year that we focus on the “Risen Christ, where the resurrection changes everything. Everything starts and ends with the resurrection of Christ - the Great Gospel.” Within, his message entitled “Not in Vain,” drawn from 1st Corinthians 15:58; Dr. Young encouraged each Seminarian to hold firm to this belief, the belief that “Everything that Christ said he would accomplish, has been done, through the work of the cross.” He confirmed that this is what Denver Seminary will hang it’s hat on and each Seminarian should seek to hold firm to that truth. Jesus Christ is everything! Convocation symbolically mirrored a coming together of the main campus and the extension site, to share in the launch of the academic year. It speaks to the partnership that the two campuses share in ensuring a sound vision and direction for the development of all Seminarians, rooted and grounded in the redemptive power of Jesus Christ.

My Writing Center Experience By: Felicia Murray My Experience with the Writing Center Let me start by saying that “I Hate Writing Papers.” Some of you may feel the same way as I do. I knew that I would have to write papers in Seminary but it is not my favorite thing to do and I struggle putting my thoughts and words on paper. I would rather take a test than to write a 10 page paper.

So if you are like me, the Writing Center is for you! Since the writing center is located in Littleton, Colorado, they have an online Zoom session for the DC and West Texas campuses that you can sign up for in 30 minute intervals, which is enough time to accomplish what you might need to do. I took advantage of this back in September with one of the ladies in the Writing center. She was very helpful in brainstorming ideas and giving me helpful suggestions in writing my paper as well as giving me feedback on what to write and the direction that I needed to take. I gave her the criteria from my syllabus, and together she was able to help me start my paper. I will probably go back to her one more time to have her take a look at what I have written so far. So if you need help in any kind of writing assignment, help with beginning, getting ideas, using the Turabian style or even proofreading what you have already written, even if you have not finished your paper, the Writing Center is a good place to go.
