TEAMS WINS

We WIN when young adults…

MAKE DISCIPLES & LIVE THE CALL

MAKE DISCIPLES One of the last things Jesus did before he left this planet was to give us a mission. He gave us a great big task to tackle. He commissioned us to go and make disciples of all nations. That is our assignment, which he perfectly modeled while still on earth. In word and in action, we are to reach out to our local and global world. To accomplish this win, as individuals and as a ministry, we have created a handful of opportunities for young adults to serve and engage in relational ministry with others. Relational ministry is the method in which disciples are made. Rather than preaching at someone, we train our various teams to come alongside someone in friendship and love. We find that approach to be the most effective when trying to make disciples. This practically manifests itself through local ministry teams and international mission trips.

LIVE THE CALL

There are two types of calling. First, there is the universal calling that is common to every Christian across the nation. Every believer has been charged to live out the Great Commandment and the Great Commission. We are to help represent and spread God’s Kingdom here on earth. That is our universal calling.

Second, everyone has an individual calling as well. This is a specific mission that God has given to a specific individual. Each one of us is commissioned to discover and fulfill our individual calling. God purposely designed and wired us for a reason. It’s our job as leaders to not only help our young adults discover their individual calling, but to help them live out both types of these callings.

MINISTRY TEAMS WHAT ARE MINISTRY TEAMS? Ministry teams are a variety of volunteer teams that faithfully meet the ongoing needs of our ministry and local community. They are young adults, serious about their faith, who actively serve God by using their gifts and talents. The great theologian Martin Luther once said, “We are saved by faith alone, but if our faith is alone... it is not faith.” Action is required. We not only want every young adult to “have” faith... but to “live out” their faith by serving others! When we serve, we grow. And at the same time, when we serve, we touch the heart of God. Jesus said, “When you do it unto the least of these, you do it unto me.” Below is a list and brief description of the current ministry teams:

CARE TEAM It’s a big deal when someone checks out church for the first time. It’s an even bigger deal when they return because of the care they felt after they walked out our door. It’s the goal of this team to make sure no one feels left out. We do this by following up, checking in, and caring for individuals in need. Email Signe Olsen if you’re interested. ([email protected])

MEDIA TEAM The members of media team are the ones who really make services happen. They are the ones who control everything from behind a curtain. Lights, sound, video… they do it all. And all of it is absolutely critical to the success of our services. Email Marc Breda if you’re interested ([email protected])

SET UP TEAM Often the act of setting up chairs gets equated with grunt work, but it’s honestly so much more. You are setting up an environment so young adults can encounter the God of the universe! It’s real servant leadership. This role is perfect for someone who has a passion for order and cleanliness. Email Pastor Jake if you’re interested. ([email protected])

WELCOME TEAM This team is the tip of the spear. They are the first impression an individual will have with our ministry, and that first impression is so important. A young adult will not make a spiritual decision until they are socially and environmentally comfortable. It’s the job of the welcome team to create that environment. So if you’re good with people, this is a good spot to serve. Email Howie & Amy Biemeck if you’re interested. ([email protected])

WORSHIP TEAM One of our mantras around this church is to “Worship First”. We do this by facilitating a time and place for people to respond to God’s love. God grants a multitude of talents through singing and instruments. This team is made up of those individuals who have not only been blessed with the talent, but a heart for worship as well. Email John Stearns if you’re interested. ([email protected]).

KIDTOWN KidTown is our children’s ministry at the church. It happens every Sunday morning and centers around teaching children how to live a life for Jesus. If you’re good with kids, then KidTown is a great place to serve. Email Pastor Alex if you’re interested. ([email protected])

STUDENT MINISTRIES Student Ministries is our 6th-12th grade program. We’re always looking for good leaders who love God, love students, and want to love students to God. You can serve as a Sunday leader on Sunday mornings or a life group leader of Wednesday night. Either way, our adult leaders are the real shepherds to our students. Email Pastor Rory if you’re interested. ([email protected])

MISSION TEAMS The following four focuses are not only our local mission, but also our global mission. If you want more information about any of these teams, email Pastor Lynne. ([email protected])

INDIA // CHURCH PLANTING Overlake partners with pastors and leaders in other countries such as India who are part of church planting movements among the least and the lost. We work with organizations and national pastors to provide: gatherings to encourage, teach and train; structures for accountability and ongoing support; prayer walk teams for new areas of church planting; and training resources.

KENYA // STREET KIDS We are passionate about helping the millions of fatherless kids who live right here in our neighborhoods as well as overseas. Our goal is that every person at Overlake and throughout our community would develop a heart for orphans. One of our main ministries overseas is in Kenya where we help get the street kids into homes.

THAILAND // HUMAN TRAFFICKING We continue to labor in Pattaya Thailand, which has become the hub of the sex trafficking in that region. Teams have partnered with Thai groups to pray, reach out, and work to prevent thousands of children from being trafficked. Our goal is to rescued, stabilize and empower 1,000 girls and boys to live free of the sex trade. Through partnerships and safe transitional houses, we are seeing lives changed and restored.

SOUTH AFRICA // AIDS Overlake is committed to equipping the local church to address HIV/AIDS within the given context of its community. Whether that’s equipping our church to address HIV/AIDS in King County or it’s helping a church in Africa to do the same, we are responding to Christ’s call to care for those who suffer.

LEADERSHIP MISCONCEPTIONS

For most people, investing into young adults can be a bit intimidating. But trust me, it’s not as hard as you might think! We’ve heard the same old misconceptions time and time again. Misconceptions that unfortunately prevent most people from getting started in ministry and making a real difference in the life of an individual.

MISCONCEPTIONS… I I I I I I I I I

must must must must must must must must must

be young and hip have adequate Bible training be a perfect example of a Christian feel secure be able to act like one of the students have plenty of free time know everything about the latest youth culture be wild, crazy, and dynamic be liked by all students

Let’s be honest, this isn’t the most comfortable ministry in the church. So it's completely normal for you to feel a wee-bit inadequate about your skills and ability to relate. But know this: your confidence will grow the more you're around young adults and you’ll see how God can use inadequate people (like you and me) to do great things. Here's the truth about what students need:

ADULTS WHO WILL... Remember their name Go to their world Pray for them Laugh with them and at themselves Take initiative to spend a little time with them Believe in them Love Jesus authentically in front of them We do this thing as a team. The differences in each of us are what make our leadership teamwork! We can’t be all things to young adults... young, old, crazy, wise, funny, sociable, quiet, etc. We just need to be the person God made us to be and someone else will fill in the gaps of what we aren’t! In the famous words of Rocky Balboa from Rocky II, “I got gaps… Adrienne got gaps… together we ain’t got no gaps!”

BECOMING A LEADER Young Adults Ministries has big goals, the bar is high, and we need people who are willing to step up to the plate so big things can happen. We encourage people that if they even have the slightest interest to go ahead and apply. Some of the best leaders on the team were actually unsure if they should step into leadership. But they did… and that made all the difference. Below is the process of moving from the sideline on to the field. (STEP 1)

Again, thanks for taking this step of faith to serve young adults. We know that God will stretch you and use you in big ways this year. We are on the front lines of the battle my friends, let’s go to war! Together, Following Jesus, Leading Young Adults, Jake & the Team
