River Falls Community Arts Base

River Falls Community Theatre

The River Falls Community Arts Base (CAB) has been celebrating the arts in our community for the last 20 years. The volunteer organization promotes the arts through several community events including; Music in the Park, Community Arts Base, Spring Arts Gala, Main Street Art Crawl and their largest, Art on the Kinni. Each year the event features over 50 artists and draws over 1,500 attendees. In addition to the events they put on in the community, CAB recently teamed up with Powerful Choices unit of River Falls Municipal Utilities for the River Falls Utility Box Beautification program. CAB reached out to local artists to complete the painting of utility boxes. The River Falls Community Foundation recently awarded $500 grant to CAB to help compensate the participating artists. CAB is happy to have found their new home at Art’s House with the River Falls Community Theatre.

River Falls Community Theatre (RFCT) is a volunteer, member driven, non-profit organization that is supported by families, individuals, and businesses. Their mission is to provide high quality, affordable theatre experience for the area residents of all ages and skill levels. RFCT produces five productions each year; a fall play, a holiday show, one act plays in the late winter, spring show with the River Falls High School and a two-week long children’s workshops in the summer. Like CAB, RFCT runs soley on volunteers and is always searching for individuals with talents in set design, sound crew, lighting crew, props and costumes, and publicity. The American Planning Association – Wisconsin Chapter (WIAPA) presented the City of River Falls and St. Croix Valley Habitat for Humanity the award of Sustainable Housing Community for the Eco Village. The WIAPA recognizes outstanding achievements and innovations in planning and to publicize persons and organizations whose activities advance planning in Wisconsin. In 2011 the City of River Falls and the St. Croix Valley Habitat for Humanity partnered in a pilot project to develop a sustainable and stateof-the-art affordable housing project called Eco Village. Construction of the Eco Village began in 2011 to construct 18 homes east of South Apollo Road. The benefits from this sustainable housing community are many. This project has fostered community pride, family stability, a valuable public-private partnership, and environmental stewardship within the City of River Falls. The project involved an innovative re-imagining of seven acres of grey field land into a beautiful, livable, and sustainable neighborhood the entire community is proud of. “The Eco Village was a vision of the community that put the heart, mind and soul on a mission of creating a sustainability and state-of-the-art affordable housing project.” Buddy Lucero - Community Development Director. The City of River Falls prides itself on its commitment to environmental stewardship and the Eco Village ties into the community’s environmental vision. At the heart of the Eco Village project is a commitment to sustainable building practices. Every home includes solar panels on rooftops for energy generation, solar thermal systems for the production of hot water, rainwater cisterns to capture rainwater for use by homeowners, sustainable and efficient construction materials, and a community garden for low cost, high quality food options. The efforts of the City of River Falls and the St. Croix Valley Habitat for Humanity are first-of-its-kind with regards to developing a whole neighborhood of high quality and sustainable affordable housing. As a result of the success of the project, Habitat for Humanity is planning on expanding the Eco-Village concept to other northwest Wisconsin communities and possibly nation-wide in the future. WESTconsin Credit Union offices are collecting non-perishable food products and cash donations for families in need from December 7-19. Items can be dropped off at any WESTconsin location including Amery, Baldwin, Barron, Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire, Ellsworth, Hudson, Menomonie (North, Downtown and East), New Richmond, Prescott, River Falls and Spring Valley. All proceeds will be delivered by the credit union to local food pantries for distribution. Monetary donations are especially valuable because for every $1 in cash, food pantries can purchase up to $10 worth of food. The number of families in need has increased substantially in recent years, leaving food shelves less stocked than in the past. According to the 2010 Poverty and Population estimates from the US Census Bureau, 69,950 people in the 14 counties of west central Wisconsin live in poverty including more than one of every five children. Our Neighbors Place will be providing a safe, warm overnight shelter for individuals to sleep from November December through March. In addition, showers, snacks, breakfast and coffee will be available for guests. Our Neighbors Place is currently seeking volunteer to assist with operations. Volunteers must be 18 years or older, undergo training and orientation, work a minimum of two shifts per season, and have compassion and understanding to work with people of many backgrounds and beliefts. Interested individuals should contact 715-426-9000 or [email protected]. The University of Wisconsin-River Falls Masquers will present “Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead” Dec. 8-12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sanford Syse Theatre in the Kleinpell Fine Arts building. This raunchy new take on the classic Peanuts comic strip sheds some light onto real-life struggles that teenagers face every day. “Don’t expect the sweet and light-hearted Peanuts that you’re used to. There are moments that make me laugh out loud, gasp, and sometimes even tear up.” Audiences should be ready for taboo topics, adult language, and an all-around good time at the performances. Tickets are $10/adults, $8/seniors, $5 for others under 18 (one free ticket per student with UWRF ID available at the Box Office window only). Tickets can be purchased in person, by phone at 715-425-3114, or online at uwrf.edu/SASA/universitytheatre/index.cfm.
