Lord, let Your grace, grace from Your hand fall on us Lord, let Your grace, grace from Your hand fall on us That we may be saved, that we may have life To find our way in the darkest night, let Your grace fall on us

A Service of Hope and Healing Monday, December 21, 2015 | 7:00PM, The Chapel “For God who said, ‘let light shine out of darkness’, made His light shine in our hearts…”

Lord, let Your love, love with no end come over us Lord, let Your love, love with no end come over us That we may be saved, that we may have life To find our way in the darkest night, let Your love come over us Looking to Jesus: a time for Reflective Prayer Brandon Elrod

II Corinthians 4:6

As Isaiah 61 declares, Jesus was sent to heal the brokenhearted.

Welcome to this sacred space tonight. As we look to the

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the Lord has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted;

healing power and light of Christ through our time together, may you “…be strengthened by the power of His Spirit in your inner being.” Colossians 3:16. Let the noise and garish lights of the culture’s holiday season, give way in this hour to the peace and presence of the Holy Spirit. The same Spirit that miraculously came upon the virgin Mary to bring us the Holy Savior over 2,000 years ago, is alive and at work by faith in each of our hearts. We look to Him tonight for all the comfort, hope and healing that our hearts may be longing for. Though this is the longest night of the year (winter solstice), we’re looking to the strongest Light of our lives.

He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners; To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, To grant those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning,

The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified. *Space for journaling on previous page.

THE HAMMER HOLDS

O COME O COME EMMANUEL

A shapeless piece of steel, that’s all I claim to be This hammer pounds to give me form, this flame, it melts my dreams I glow with fire and fury, as I’m twisted like a vine My final shape, my final form I’m sure I’m bound to find Chorus: So dream a little, dream for me in hopes that I’ll remain And cry a little, cry for me so I can bear the flames And hurt a little, hurt for me my future is untold But my dreams are not the issue here, for they, the hammer holds And the water, it cools me gray, and the hurt’s subdued somehow I have my shape, this sharpened point, what is my purpose now? And the question still remains, what am I to be? Perhaps some perfect piece of art displayed for all to see The hammer pounds again, but flames I do not feel This force that drives me, helplessly, through flesh, and wood reveals A burn that burns much deeper, it’s more than I can stand The reason for my life was to take the life of a guiltless man Ending: This task before me may seem unclear, but it, my maker holds By Bebo Norman ©1999 Appstreet Music , New Spring, CCLI License # 342334

Song of Reflection - Pastor Ron SHINE ON US

Lord, let Your light, light of Your face shine on us Lord, let Your light, light of Your face shine on us That we may be saved, that we may have life To find our way in the darkest night, let Your light shine on us

O come O come Emmanuel and ransom captive Israel That mourns in lowly exile here until the Son of God appear Chorus: Rejoice, rejoice, Emanuel shall come to Thee O Israel O come Thou Dayspring come and cheer our spirits by Thine advent here Disperse the gloomy clouds of night and death’s dark shadow put to flight Text: Latin hymn, Psalteriolum Cantionum Catholicarum, 1710 Translated by John M. Neale Music: Adapted from Plainsong by Thomas Helmore

S c r i p tur e R e a di ng – I sa i a h 6 0 : 1 - 2 O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM

O little town of Bethlehem how still we see thee lie Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight How silently how silently the wondrous gift is giv’n So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His heaven No ear may hear His coming but in this world of sin Where meek souls will receive Him still the dear Christ enters in Text: Phillips Brooks, Music: Lewis H. Redner

S c r i p tur e R e a di ng – Luk e 2 : 1 - 7 SILENT NIGHT

Silent night, holy night all is calm, all is bright Round yon Virgin Mother and Child Holy Infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace sleep in heavenly peace Silent night, holy night Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face with the dawn of redeeming grace Jesus, Lord at Thy birth Jesus, Lord at Thy birth Text: Joseph Mohr; translated by John F. Young Music: Franz Gruber

THE HURT 400 years of silence and broken dreams “So justice is far from us, and righteousness does not reach us. We look for light, but all is darkness; for brightness, but we walk in deep shadows” (Isaiah 59:9-10) The world has become a very dark place, and we wonder, where is God in all of this? We are living in the land of the shadow of death and long to see the light. Where is hope?

THE HURT “My God, my God, why have you forsaken

me?” “ Far from my deliverance are the words of my groaning. Oh my God, I cry by day, but You do not answer, and by night, but I have no rest” (Psalm 22:1-2)

THE HOPE In the midst of suffering, He is trustworthy

“For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; nor has He hidden His face from him; But when he cried to Him for help, He heard” (Psalm 22:23-24)

THE HOPE He understands our suffering

“We do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:15-16) At the tomb of Lazarus, “Jesus wept.” (John 11:35) “The Lord is full of compassion, and is merciful” (James 5:11) “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33)

THE HEALING “In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.” “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:4-5).

“God has said, “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you. So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?” (Hebrews 13:5-6). “He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him,” “since He always lives to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25).

THE MEDITATION “Therefore let us draw near with

confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16)
