A little over a year ago, I attended an auction under the allure of possibly attaining a bronze statue of a wild horse. We were in the midst of building the new Athletic Center, and I thought that this piece was as close to a bronco as you could get and that it would make a fine focal point. Armed with what I thought was a solid idea to compete in the bidding, I ventured to the auction with another BACS staff member. I used to work in an auction house (along with 100 other jobs) during my college years, so I was aware of the idiosyncrasies surrounding a Saturday auction. Certainly there were some characters there, but one burly fellow in bib overalls caught my attention. He seemed to know the folks at the auction house well, and he gregariously engaged with those around him. As I surveyed the room, another person caught my eye – an older lady with a solemn expression and pessimistically squinted eyes. She seemed to be the antithesis of the expressive man in overalls. Eying the two juxtaposed personalities as they closed in proximity, the big, lively man seemed to evaluate her personality immediately and bellowed while simultaneously pointing to the floor behind her, “Ma’am, I believe you dropped your smile back there.” She actually turned and looked as the man gave a robust laugh and charming smile. I was laughing too hard to notice her reaction. My “solid idea” of a competing offer was outdone on the auctioneer’s third bid. At the end of the day, I had no bronco, but I had taken away a great one-liner and a funny memory. Some people seem to have a knack for one-liners. What I’ve noticed about these folks who have this propensity is that their background is extensive. They’ve been lots of places, they’ve seen lots of things, but most of all, I believe they’ve observed and listened to others with the same ability. Think about it – if I wanted my children to be able to rattle off quick one-liners and ice-breaking statements, I wouldn’t tell them to observe someone who is extremely introverted or shy. While they possess other qualities which are worthy of emulating, they wouldn’t be the best to mimic. This same analysis translates to our educational suppositions. Families have selected Bay Area Christian School because of our reputation for providing a quality Christian education while impacting lives for now and eternity. If a family wanted their child to be challenged academically and spiritually, why would they send them to a place where those values aren’t esteemed? BACS is in its 45th year of providing this type of powerful experience to our students and this value to our families. I’m thankful that we have a chance to impact the next generation as they listen and observe in a setting that embraces truth and knowledge with professionals who love the one true God most and others as themselves. To serve our families in this way is a blessing! Be assured that the cost of influencing your child in the ways that matter most is worth it. Generationally focused, Jason Nave Head of School

The second semester is packed full of activities. While there’s a great deal of fun to be had, it’s critical that students use their time wisely in order to stay up to speed on their academics. On February 8th-9th over 50 of our 8th grade students traveled to visit Baylor University, TCU, and the Presidential Library in College Station. This will be a great trip and hopefully serve as motivation as they enter their high school years. Keep an eye and ear out for more information that will be coming out regarding other events in JH.

Counselor’s Corner Nancy Gadd Upcoming SAT Dates: Test dates, March 10 (late registration deadline is 2/28), May 5 (registration deadline is 4/6) Upcoming ACT Dates: Test date, April 14 (registration deadline is 3/9) or June 9 (registration deadline is 5/4)

In closing, I’d like to encourage you to spend meaningful time with your students and stay involved in every aspect of their lives. I know they are Juniors: should take one of the growing up fast and before long they’ll be off to college. Take the time upcoming SAT and/or ACT exams. to cherish those special family moments. Information and registration is available on-line at: It’s a great day to be a Bronco! www.collegboard.org (for the SAT) and www.actstudent.org (for the High School News Melissa Fuqua ACT.) As I write this, Beta Club is about to leave for the State Convention in Dallas. They have been busy preparing for their competitions and I'm sure will represent us well. Progress Reports will be emailed the afternoon of Tuesday the 13th. Students get an extra long weekend as the teachers will be attending the ACTABS Teacher Conference on Friday the 16th, and we all will be off for President's Day Monday the 19th. Pull out your western attire and help us celebrate Go Texan Day the 23rd! I pray for health, strength, and endurance for our students and teachers. I teasingly call third quarter the third quarter blues. The weather is dreary, illness can abound, and time can drag. But this is our opportunity to encourage each other, to draw on the Lord's strength to apply ourselves to the task at hand, and not grow weary in doing well. The joy of the Lord can bring us through trying circumstances. We are in the middle of the year and need to "stay in the fight" and look for the positive. I'm quoting Psalm 90:17 to myself, "May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us..." God IS present and at work in our classrooms. Saddle up and ride proud because it really is a great day to be a Bronco!

The Softball team is eager to return to the field to defend their district title. The Lady Broncos will open the season away at the John Cooper School. Junior high baseball and softball have also begun, and both teams are looking to start off with strong performances in the coming weeks during their first games. Track season has begun at the JH and HS levels. Many of the athletes already look in mid-season form and will be vying to get to State in Waco in May. Lastly, let's remember that others are watching our behavior in the stands at athletic contests. WE ARE BRONCO NATION, and we may be the only Bible that someone will ever read. What will they read when they see us at the game?
