upcoming events Dear BACS Families, January 21 MLK Holiday No School January 28 State of the School Address & Preview Night

Welcome to the second semester of the 2018-19 school year. It has been fantastic to see our incredible students and wonderful families back on campus! We have an exciting second semester of school ahead of us, and there are several important details to note.  The annual State of the School Address and Preview Night is scheduled for Monday, January

28th at 6:30-8:30. The first hour will be the State of the School Address while the second hour will be an open venue for Preview Night attendees. This is a tremendous opportunity to see the progress and achievements of our school and to learn new and exciting initiatives to come.  Priority re-enrollment for our current BACS families will be open in February. However, this is a

re-enrollment that is much different from the past. This year, BACS is moving to “continuous enrollment.” Rather than filling out applications for re-enrollment each year, we want to make it easier on our families with “continuous re-enrollment” by automatically re-enrolling your children unless you indicate otherwise. During the month of February, you will receive a document from our Admission’s Office, which will enroll your family into “continuous enrollment.” Yes, you can still withdraw anytime, but in the future, instead of 90% of our families going through the hassle of re-enrollment, those wishing not to return would simply let us know in February while everyone else is automatically re-enrolled. Please look for more details forthcoming. I hope the second semester is off to a great start for you and your family, and may 2019 bring you many blessings! We are excited to see what the Lord has for our school and our students and families in the year ahead!

Elementary Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe this is 2019. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas season. Right before Christmas our 8th graders had the opportunity along with some of our teachers to deliver Christmas presents to 2nd grade students at Pilgrim Academy in Houston. It was a great opportunity for our students to serve and be a blessing to those in the Houston area. As we begin the new semester, it’s important that students get off to a strong start by staying current on homework and assignments. In order to do this it’s best that students are present and on time for class each day. Remember that attendance is taken into account, along with discipline and academics, when determining final exam exemptions in May. The second semester is packed with activities and will go by quickly. In closing, our hope is that your student's walk with Christ will be strengthened in this new year. We look forward to continuing to work with your student in the second semester.

Junior High New Year greetings to you! Report Cards were emailed Jan. 8th. If you did not receive one, please contact Mrs. den Herder in our office. NHS is preparing for their induction on the 14th, fifteen Beta members will be representing us at the State Convention is Dallas on the 31st, and announcements for those interested in trying out for our Academic Team will be coming shortly. Students, please listen to announcements and meet required deadlines for things in which you are interested. I'm hearing from some of our new students that we have the reputation of being a friendly campus, that they have been welcomed and made friends quickly. That is the goal! Parents are the biggest influencers in how children treat others. What actions/talk do we laugh at or condone? Our in-service speaker said if every parent sat down with their child and explained that in this world there are sheep, sheep dogs, and wolves, and challenged that in our family, we will be sheep dogs - it would make a difference. He said parents should have a rule that in and out of our home, we will not pick on or bully others, but we WILL speak up and defend others. Expect your child to report a problem, comfort a person that is a target, and speak up to mean behavior by telling the person to stop and leave them alone. Just those things alone will make home and school a better place. Those are the type of students we expect, and appreciate at Bay Area Christian. As you overhear conversations, I hope you will condemn bad behavior and teach your child how to defend the weak. Thank you for partnering with us!

Curriculum  January 7, all BACS faculty attended the workshop “How to Decrease Bullying in your Community and School” by the founder and president of The Protectors, an international, freedom-from-bullying organization that partners with both faith-based and secular groups. Mr. Coughlin cited a Barna study in which parents identified the physical and emotional safety of their kids as their top concern. Coughlin discussed with our faculty important information about bullying and the keys to a successful anti-bullying program which briefly includes growing our capacity for courage, bystander intervention, common vocabulary, providing help for targets, and enlisting parents. If 20% of parents talk with their children at the dinner table about prosocial behavior (i.e., expect child to report bullying, comfort the target, lionize courage whenever possible, or intervene when bullying occurs, it will decrease bullying in a community). If you would like a synopsis of the Hero in You program used at BACS elementary, please, email me at [email protected].

Kyle Kennedy—Director The Fine Arts classes at Bay Area offer many meaningful benefits and rewards to all students. Students who are enrolled in Fine Arts classes are taught to think creatively, and learn to make sense of the world around them through hands on practice and experience. As a private Christian school, we are able to combine the benefits of a solid, content based Fine Arts education, with a biblical worldview, which ultimately helps students make sense of the world in which they live while reinforcing fundamental biblical truths. We are actively teaching the values of teamwork, encouraging problem-solving skills, and developing a solid work ethic while worshipping our creator through developing and encouraging the gifts he has placed inside of our students. As human beings made in the image of our Creator, we have all been given some ability to create.

Fine Arts would like to congratulate Meredith Hite for winning 1st place in the landscape photo category and 4th place in the photo animal category in the TAPPS Fall Photo contest. Also, mark your calendars for this year’s Talent Show, which will be held on Thursday, Feb. 22nd. All sign ups will be processed electronically. If your child is interested in participating, an email with more details and information will be coming soon!!

Meet the Creech Family What brought you to BACS? We came to BACS so Autumn could attend a Christian school that would help her to grow socially, physically, academically, as well as spiritually in a balanced atmosphere. We have always felt that BACS has met that standard for our family. The teachers as well as the whole staff at BACS have displayed true Christianity. It has truly been a joy for Autumn to attend BACS for her entire school years.

Traveling is one of your favorite family activities. Any trip stand out in your memories?

Please tell us a little bit about your family. Our daughter, Autumn, is a senior this year at BACS. She has been at BACS since she was 3 years old where she attended the preschool program. My husband, Kelly, is a ship pilot with Houston Pilots. I, on the other hand, taught elementary school for close to 10 years, but have been substituting and volunteering at BACS off and on since Autumn started preschool. We live in Santa Fe, TX and attend Arcadia First Baptist Church. We are very active in our church. Kelly is a deacon, we are on several committees and do quite a bit of volunteer work there. Autumn is involved with the youth group and helps with Children’s Church at Arcadia.

Traveling is definitely one of our favorite family activities. One trip that stands out in our memories is one of our hikes in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park near Gatlinburg, TN. We were hiking a few miles on one of the popular trails that leads to a beautiful waterfall when we encountered a mother black bear and her two cubs. They were crossing our trail to get to the creek on the other side of the trail and the hill they came down. It was neat to see the bear up so close but quite scary not knowing if the mother bear would defend her cubs since they were only a few feet from where we were standing. Thank the good Lord the bear just looked at us and kept crossing over to take her cubs to the creek for a drink. After it was over, we kept warning everyone that we saw on the trail about the bear and cubs. That was truly a memory that our family will never forget!!! This is a big year...Autumn is graduating! Do you have any big plans? As I have previously mentioned, Autumn is a senior and will be graduating this May. She is excited about attending the Costa Rica school mission trip before graduation. We plan to take a family trip this summer of 2019 to visit several eastern states such as West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, New York, Massachusetts, and Maine. We look forward to visiting several sites in Washington DC, New York City, Bar Harbor, ME and visiting Shenandoah National Park, Acadia National Park and Niagara Falls. Autumn will be attending Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton, TX the fall of 2019. What is your favorite family meal? We love to eat (LOL), but I think our favorite family meal is Mexican casserole from Jimmy Changa’s.

That building was just supposed to be there for a couple of years. It was there for over 30 years and served as kindergarten – 2nd grade classrooms and the main office until the Cullins Building was built.

Flashback Fact: There was a building where the playground is located now called the Ellington Building. It was old Ellington Air Force Base barracks that the school purchased for $1. It cost about $800 to move them to our campus from Hwy 3.
