May 23 Last Day of School

Dear BACS Families, We are in the thick of one of the most crucial months of the school year. As we come to the midpoint of April, it is imperative that students remain focused on pushing through spring fever and concentrate on finishing well. Also, it is important to remember to check the calendar for all of the many special events in the month of April. School will be over before we know it, and we want to end on a positive note! Our sixth grade Legacy Ceremony will be this week on Friday, April 12th. This is an important time where parents will be on campus to accompany their child(ren) as we look at a biblical model for legacy and work through a time of demonstrating our commitment to that endeavor. Afterwards, we will venture into the Athletic Center and listen to Mr. Rainey give a survey of expectations for the incoming seventh graders of the 2019-20 school year! Other important reminders are for our Junior and Senior Prom on Saturday, April 13th. We have over 80 students on the roster, so we should have an elegant “Night in Paris.” The week of April 15th is a busy week, too. Please remember this is Terra Nova testing, and we will not have chapel that Wednesday. Additionally, we are out of school for Good Friday and will be out of school on Monday, April 22nd following the Easter weekend. Enjoy the long holiday weekend, and if you don’t have a place to attend Good Friday service or Easter service, we would be honored for you to visit Bay Area Church on Friday at 5:30pm or 7pm and on Sunday at 8:00am, 9:15am, 10:30am, or 11:45am. Please make plans to attend our spring Fine Arts Concert on Tuesday, April 30th. Our Band, Choir, Orchestra, and Art programs from 5th-12th grade will be featured on this evening. Come see the incredible progress they’ve made as our Fine Arts programs continue to grow! Also, we are excited that our first Theatre production, The Orphan Train, will be performed by our High School Theatre Class on Saturday, April 26th. Look for more information on how to secure tickets. God is continuing to bless us as next year is taking shape in enrollment, scheduling, and programs. Our current students are achieving greatly, and I’m encouraged by the spiritual conversations I’m having with our students as we talk about their colleges of choice and their plans to live their lives for God’s glory. It’s a great day to be a Bronco! Jason Nave

News from our Leaders

Terra Nova achievement testing will be April 16-18. We encourage students to get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast each morning before school. Since testing will begin first thing in the morning, please arrive on time these three days. Electronics and games will not be permitted once a student finishes each section. However, students may bring a book to read. There will be no make-ups for students that are absent. Also, please be reminded we will not have chapel on Wednesday, April 17 due to the testing schedule that day.

“Smartphones Linked to Suicide?” Thomas Kersting, a family therapist who wrote the book, “Disconnecting: How to Reconnect our Digitally Distracted Kids” put forth some interesting points in a recent interview. Kersting says research shows that one-third of all teens visiting ER’s in the US were suicide risks. That is shockingly high. Suicide and attempts are rising rapidly among young people along with depression and anxiety disorders. He and other therapists agree this surge coincides closely with the rise of social media and the smart phone.

Why? Pre-adolescence and adolescence is an important developmental stage. Hormones are changing, they are trying to figure out who they are, and where they fit in, who their friend group is – there is a built in insecurity. This is an important transition into adulthood. Kids must navigate these things to become well-functioning, self-sufficient adults. Now add smartphones – which he calls modern day weapons of mass destruction because of the social media access. Now kids have a platform where they are constantly comparing themselves to others, constantly getting feedback, and seeking feedback from the outside world, and it is compromising their self-esteem. He says self-esteem is never anything that can be gotten from the outside world, it can only come from the inside. (As Christians we know our identity and worth comes from Christ).

Kersting says there needs to be a national conversation of this great threat to the well-being and lives of kids. The average age of smart phone issuance with access to social media is ten years old! He says most parents know this is a terrible idea, but we tend to do what others do. Because this is now a mental health crisis, he and his fellow counselors feel if parents can’t make wise decisions regarding social media, then maybe lawmakers need to regulate it just like alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. If he made the rules he would ban the social media aspect of smartphones until age eighteen. Studies are showing that in 2007, with the emergence of the smartphone, that there has been a steady rise in suicide and anxiety disorders, and the age of kids dealing with this is younger and younger. Our kids are getting lost in a superficial world… “Let them give thanks to the LORD for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for men, for He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.” Psalm 107: 8-9 I pray for wisdom and discernment for our students and parents.

Curriculum The TerraNova3 Achievement Tests will be given Tuesday through Thursday, April 16-18. Schedules will vary between elementary and secondary levels. Please be aware that we do not “teach to the test,” but the test results will provide us with important assessment information in evaluating our instructional program and additional data for measuring student growth and ability level. If your student misses all or part(s) of the test, there will not be a make-up time. However, results will be reported on the portions they do take. Since there is a strong relationship between getting a good night’s sleep and eating a healthy breakfast to increased academic achievement, please ensure your student gets plenty of rest and eats a great breakfast. We begin testing right away, so please allow plenty of margin to get to school on time. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Meet the Curley Family 1. Please tell us a little bit about your family. Mom and Dad are both engineers. Mom works at NASA, and Dad works for Oceaneering. After homeschooling the kids for 3 years (which was tough while working too), we joined Bay Area Christian. Keelin is in 10th grade. Aidan is in 8th grade, and Kade is in 6th grade. Keelin is the most active, with varsity swimming, color guard/ winter guard, and band. Aidan and Kade are both in orchestra. We love the school atmosphere. Everyone is so positive, compassionate, and loving, and we value the Biblical teachings. We are a very close family and spend lots of time together. We are a huge LEGO family. We have a giant collection and build and play with it almost daily - even our young cat steals parts with which to play! We love to watch movies - mostly animated, but we have become addicted to the Marvel movies now.

2. Please describe the most beautiful place your family has ever visited.

3. With three kids, what does a typical Saturday look like for your family?

Everyone has a slightly different take on it, but in general we love The Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

As a swimming family, many Saturdays are spent getting up early and spending many, many hours on the pool deck. Those times we don't have swim, we sleep in (well, not Mom), and do chores.

4. What is one dream your family has? For Kade's golden birthday, when he turns 15, we would like to take the Disney Cruise to the Disney Island.

6. What is a favorite family meal? Dad's Bacon Chicken Ranch Casserole.

5. What is your favorite family board game? Ticket to Ride
