SPRING 2014

MOONLIGHT MOVIES AN OUTDOOR SERIES PRESENTED BY THE NEW ORLEANS FILM SOCIETY

ABOUT THE SERIES Moonlight Movies, formerly known as “Movies to Geaux,” is a biannual outdoor movie series presented by the New Orleans Film Society (NOFS). What began as a string of collaborations with local organizations in 2011 (NOLA Drive-In and the New Orleans Museum of Art, to name a few), today stands as a sustainable series thanks to a generous grant from the Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation and a Kickstarter campaign initiated in 2012. From this support the NOFS was able to purchase a 25-foot outdoor inflatable screen, projector, and sound equipment to help bring the joy of outdoor cinema to more communities in the Greater New Orleans area. The purpose is simple: to gather audiences for exciting free and low-cost film events in neighborhoods around the city, and to show a wide range of films. From classics, cult films, and Louisiana favorites, this year’s spring lineup attests to our fun-filled mission: to engage, educate, and inspire through the art of film. So grab a blanket, a few of your friends, and we’ll see you there! NOTE: All screenings begin at sundown, below times are estimations. Same applies to the rain dates!

DIR. ALFRED HITCHCOCK, 1946 A woman with a tainted past (Ingrid Bergman) is enlisted by agent Devlin (Cary Grant) to spy on a ring of Nazis in post-war Rio. Her espionage work becomes life-threatening after she marries the most debonair of the Nazi ring. Only Devlin can rescue her, but to do so he must face his role in her desperate situation and acknowledge that he’s loved her all along. Deemed “the most elegant expression of The Master’s visual style” by Roger Ebert, the film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. TICKETS: NOFS/ NOMA Members: $3, General: $6

DIR. ALFRED HITCHCOCK, 1954 Laid up with a broken leg in his flat in the West Village, news photographer L.B. Jefferies (James Stewart) wiles away the sweaty summertime hours between visits from uptown gal Lisa Fremont (Grace Kelly) by using that telephoto lens to zero in on the human comedy across his courtyard, only to witness a murder no one thinks has occurred. One of Hitchcock’s greatest successes: a witty, nerve-shredding entertainment and technical tour de force. Based on a Cornell Woolrich story. FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

DIR. STANLEY DONEN & GENE KELLY, 1952 Considered by many to be the finest musical comedy of all-time, Singin’ in the Rain is sheer delight. Betty Comden and Adolph Green wrote this wonderful film about the time when movies were changing from silent to talkies. The songs range from the hilarious “Make ‘Em Laugh” performed by Donald O’Connor, to the delicate “You Were Meant for Me” and the show-stopping classic “Singin’ in the Rain” solo by Gene Kelly. TICKETS: NOFS/NOMA Members: $3, General: $6

His grandmother, Madame Souza, and her faithful dog Bruno follow his trail team up with the Belleville Sisters—an aged song-and-dance team from the days of Fred Astaire—to rescue him. DIR. FRITZ LANG, 1927 It’s 2026 in the city of Metropolis. The populace is divided between workers who must live in the dark underground and the rich who enjoy a futuristic city of splendor. The son of the city’s mastermind falls in love with a working class prophet who predicts the coming of a savior to mediate their differences. Metropolis stands today as a milestone of sci-fi and German expressionism. TICKETS: NOFS/Alliance Française/Louisiana Museum Foundation/Friends of the Cabildo Members: $3, General: $5

DIR. ARAM AVAKIAN & BERT STERN, 1960 Part concert documentary, part popcultural time capsule, Jazz on a Summer’s Day chronicles the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival with an approach as deceptively relaxed, even impulsive, as the music itself. This precursor to Woodstock is the granddaddy of all concert films where music greats like Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, Anita O’Day, Chuck Berry, Mahalia Jackson, and Dinah Washington gave electrifying performances.
