CHORAL INTROIT *CALL TO WORSHIP (Unison)

HYFRYDOL

adapted from The Book of Common Prayer

Almighty God, You have given us this good land for our heritage. We pray that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of Your favor and glad to do Your will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties and fashion into one united people, the multitudes brought here out of many kindreds and tongues. Endow with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in Your name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that through obedience to Your law, we may show forth Your praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in You to fail; all of which we ask through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. adapted from Reinhold Niebuhr

For the discord we create between nations and individuals by our desire of dominion over others; Lord, have mercy upon us. For the involvement of Your church in the sins of the world, for its cowardice in tempering Your judgements so that people be not disturbed; for mixing the arrogance of human opinions with the truth of Your gospel; and for all lack of charity which has brought the prejudices of Jew and Gentile, male and female and the chasm between bond and free, into the community of grace where all should be one in Christ; Lord, have mercy upon us. For the despair which corrupts our faith in the day of calamity, as for the complacency which shrouded Your word to us in the day of ease; Lord, have mercy upon us. O Lord, hear the prayers of our confession and grant that our sorrow may be a godly sorrow which leads to repentance and newness of life. Philippians 4:6-7, pew Bible, p.1071

Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be make known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

OLD HUNDREDTH

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Unison)

adapted from a prayer by Warner Hall 1976

We thank You, O God, for those, out of the past, who in the worst times, did the best things; for those who carved from the wilderness places of beauty; for those, who in times of upheaval and change, built for the centuries; and especially for those who built this house of worship so enduringly with loving skill and confident hope. Having entered into so goodly an inheritance, may we ever be mindful of all the good things we have received from those who have gone before. May we therefore be helped to love You more, and our country with a passion so strong and so true that we may be jealous of its honor and instant in its service. Grant that we shall not be content until we finish what they began, and that in our land all shall walk in the freedom of the truth and in the light of knowledge, and justice shall be done and compassion ever manifest. Accept now, O God, the offerings and prayers we bring, in the strong name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

SELWYN AVENUE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH WARMLY WELCOMES ALL WHO VISIT Please take a moment to sign the registry of friendship as it is passed along your pew so that you may be greeted and greet others by name. If you are actively searching for a new church home, we invite you to fill out the card in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate, or bring it after worship to one of the ministers. Membership is by one of three paths: 1) profession of faith in Jesus Christ (for those who have never been part of a Christian church); 2) reaffirmation of faith (for those who formerly were part of a congregation but have not been involved in recent times - for example, you were baptized and/or confirmed but moved away for military service, education, or work, and never engaged with a new congregation); or 3) transfer of membership from another congregation (you have recently moved to this area and your membership is still elsewhere, or you simply seek to become part of Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church in your faith journey). New members and prospective members are invited to participate in Orientation Conversations, which are scheduled several times a year, and are a wonderful way to meet others and learn together about all the opportunities here. We always stand ready to be in communication with you about your particular situation. The contact information for all staff members is in the bulletin each week.
