mountain lodge

march 2010

Hello Mountain Lodge! I have a couple of topics this month to discuss. We have heard from many residents about the new gate upgrade. I want to personally apologize for the challenges we have had during the transition. This project was huge and I appreciate all the help Joe Cochran gave during this significant change in our neighborhood. We have over 800 homeowners and there were some failures in the system during the installation as well as some challenges with communication between the management company and you. Considering the scope of the job and the amount of activity our gates see I believe the transition went well.  For those that experienced issues, I do feel your pain and I am confident that by the time this newsletter is mailed we should be up and running with no more problems. The other topic that has been talked about a lot is the upcoming pool season. We are going to open the pools May 1st. The pools will be open on weekends until Memorial Day when the pools will open every day. The pool hours will be 11am-9pm with two lifeguards being on duty during that time. Due to the large size of our neighborhood we are classified as a commercial pool and our attorney has recommended we limit our liability by adding lifeguards.   I hope this also provides you with a sense of greater security.  I want to reiterate why we have made these changes and why we will continue to make changes. We want a SAFE neighborhood and we all want our home values to increase, not decrease.  I want everyone to know that I appreciate all the feedback we have received and I want to encourage everyone to get more involved in the community by joining one of many committees to make this neighborhood the best it can be.   If you are interested in joining us please email [email protected]. Warm regards, David Heidenrich ML HOA President Copyright © 2010 Peel, Inc.

Recreation Centers There will be many changes with our Recreation Centers and I am happy to tell you that this year our pool facilities will have Lifeguards during our open hours. Due to the growth of our community it was imperative that Lifeguards were provided at our facilities. I am also excited about the new chaise lounges we will be adding to both of the pools, I am sure many of you will appreciate the new seating. In addition, we will now have a registration form to reserve a party at the pool pavilions. Our covenants state that we cannot reserve the facility for private use but using this reservation form will ensure that no other parties will be going on at the same time as yours and if there are parties back to back you will be confident that it will be clean and ready for your function. The new pool opening dates are: May 1st (weekends only) May 31st (summer schedule) The Misty Peak pool will be closed on Tuesdays. The Seven Winds pool will be closed on Mondays. If a holiday lands on one of those days, the pool will be open for holiday use but will be closed for cleaning the following day. We look forward to the 2010 pool season and hope with the new changes it will be another great summer!

mountain lodge Manta Ray Swim Team

DID YOU HEAR ?

The Mountain Lodge Manta Rays will be registering swimmers for the 2010 swim team season on April 10th from 10 am-2 pm and April 18th from 2 pm-4 pm at the Seven Winds Pool. This year Brooke Miller will be managing the team, her children have been swimming with the Manta Rays for a few years and for the past 2 seasons she has been our team photographer. For those of you who have not participated in our neighborhood swim team we have swimmers from age 4 through 17. As long as your child can swim the length of the pool they can be a part of swim team. Swim Team begins in May and ends the last week of June. The dates are still being finalized. The Seven Winds pool will be open for the Manta Ray Swim Team in May and then will share the pool facility when it opens to the rest of the community. We look forward to our returning swimmers and our new ones. Last year our team placed 2nd in the Championship meet and we look forward to another exciting season! If you have any questions please contact Brooke at [email protected].

Thank you for the great response to last months “Did You Hear?” column. We had a lot of residents sign up to get community information by e-mail; however, there did seem to be some confusion about how this would affect the newsletter delivery. The newsletter is delivered by the U.S. Post Office to all homes in Mountain Lodge according to a residential mailing list provided by RealManage which we forward to the publisher, Peel, Inc. The e-mail address you have provided to the HOA will insure that you receive additional time sensitive information that we can’t depend on the newsletter to provide. I am sure some of you have noticed that the January newsletter was never delivered, at least not by the time that this article was submitted. This is an ongoing problem we have with the post office and are trying to get resolved. HOWEVER, for those of you who would like to receive the Mountain Lodge Messenger electronically, there is a way. Please log on our publisher’s website, http:// www.peelinc.com/ and on Peel’s home page on the right hand side under ‘Residents’ click on the tab for ‘Sign Up For Your Newsletter’. It’s simple and the advantage to receiving it electronically is you can read it as soon as it is published which is normally within the first week of the month. Also, all past issues are available by clicking on the ‘View Newsletters’ tab and scrolling down to San Antonio. Thank you, Communication Committee Mountain Lodge HOA

mountain lodge NEISD Board Approves Elementary Boundaries GOOD NEWS !! ALL of Mountain Lodge will be going to the new Tuscany Heights Elementary School and Bush Middle School in 2010-2011 North East ISD Board of Trustees approved boundaries for two new elementary schools on Monday, Dec. 14. Due to enrollment growth north of Loop 1604, NEISD will open Cibolo Green and Tuscany Heights elementary schools for the 2010-2011 school year.  After public input, the superintendent presented boundary recommendations to the Board of Trustees at the meeting for their consideration and action. The following is the Board’s approved attendance boundaries associated with the opening of these two schools: Cibolo Green Elementary will be attended by: Bulverde Village (Blackhawk, Creekhaven, Point (NEISD portion only), Prestwick, Stratford, Turnberry), Cibolo Canyons (Cielos, Palacios, Suenos, Vallitas, Ventanas), Fossil Ridge, Fossil Creek, The Mansions at TPC. Tuscany Heights Elementary will be attended by: Canyon Springs (Estates, Links, Reserve, San Miguel, Trails, Waters), Las Haciendas, Mansions at Canyon Springs, Mountain Lodge (Fairway Bridge, Mountain Lodge, Mountain Lodge Villas), Northwind Estates, Oaklands, Retreat at Canyon Springs, Summerglen, Tuscany Heights.

Mountain Lodge Howeowner's Association - March 2010

Stone Oak Elementary will be attended by: Claremore, Villas of Sonterra, Toscana. Beginning with the application of these boundaries in the 20102011 school year, all elementary schools north of 1604 will feed a single middle school. Bush will draw attendance from Canyon Ridge, Tuscany Heights and Stone Oak; Lopez students will come from Hardy Oak and Wilderness Oak; Tejeda will draw students from Bulverde Creek, Cibolo Green, Encino Park and Roan Forest. (Enrollment capping and future boundary changes may impact future middle school attendance boundaries.) The superintendent also provided recommendations about grandfathering, which allows some students to attend their current school next year. For 2010-2011, any current Roan Forest student may elect to remain at Roan Forest and current fifth-graders at Canyon Ridge may elect to remain at Canyon Ridge, along with younger siblings for one year. Grandfathered students are responsible for their own transportation. For maps and more information, visit http://www.neisd.net/ boundaries.html. Pete Berzins is a homeowner in Mountain Lodge. We wish to thank Pete for attending the NEISD meetings and submitting this report.

Safety - March 2010 The Mountain Lodge C.O.P. (Cellular On Patrol) program has been in the planning phases for some time and we are just around the corner to an official start up. The program is sponsored by the Bexar County Sheriff ’s Office in conjunction with Citizens on Patrol and is a unique and exciting program that gives residents an opportunity to work closely with law enforcement to make their neighborhood a safer place to live. Residents will soon see the Black and Gold C.O.P. signs at all entrances to the community and at some internal locations. In addition patrols will begin in marked vehicles. The Mountain Lodge C.O.P program is currently looking for more volunteers for patrols, input, and development to improve our program. If you wish to contribute, please contact me at 210-7452113 or by email at [email protected]. In order to participate in the program, a formal training class is required which is conducted by the Bexar County Sheriff ’s Directed Patrol Unit. We will post the class schedules and locations once they are advertised by the Sheriff ’s Department. mountain lodge SUPER STREET UPDATE The Super Street design is not a new idea in alleviating traffic congestion. It is currently being used in several states across the nation including Michigan, Ohio and North Carolina. In North Carolina there are more than 50 locations using the Super Street concept to keep traffic moving. It is not intended to be a permanent solution and is estimated to effectively help for about 5 to 7 years. Hopefully, the proposal for the section of Hwy 281 between Encino Rio and Marshall Road will provide us with much needed relief from the intense traffic congestion that we have to deal with. The proposal

has been approved, funded and a contract awarded. Work is expected to begin in early March and should be completed by October of 2010.  Most of the work will be done at night to minimize disruption to existing traffic flow. Any work performed during daytime hours is proposed to happen between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. It is envisioned that the contractor would construct one intersection start-to-finish, and then move on to the next. The intersections affected will be Marshall Road, Stone Oak, Evans Road and Encino Rio.

TYPICAL SUPER STREET INTERSECTION The information above was reprinted and edited, with permission, from an article written by Brian Purcell. Go to the following link for the complete article and some very good drawings showing how the Super Street concept works. http://www.texashighwayman.com/ us281ss.htm

mountain lodge Are you a good neighbor dog owner? Do you help prevent environmental contamination by picking up and properly disposing of your dog’s feces? Here are some good reasons to pick up after your dog. Removing dog feces prevents re-infestation of your dog from exposure to infective worm eggs and larvae, and dog feces can transmit diseases from your dog to people. Roundworm, hookworm and other parasitic worms may be transmitted to young children and adults who play or work in their yard when dog feces is present. Ocular larva migrans – an eye disease caused by parasitic worms found in dog droppings can cause serious eye damage to young children. Dog feces and urine can result in lawn burn or dead patches. When it’s your dog on your neighbor’s lawn, it causes a great deal of hostility – toward you, and your dog. It is almost beyond comprehension why a dog owner would be so rude as to allow their dog to defecate on someone else’s property. You make your kids clean up their room – Please Clean Up After Your Dog. The above article was reprinted in part with the permission of Barbara Bouyet, President of “A Dogs Best Friend”.
