mountain lodge Communication Committee Update I would like to take this opportunity to inform everyone that I am stepping down as Co-chair of the Communication Committee and as editor of the newsletter. I believe it is time to have some new and fresh input to this position and I have been lucky to find the right person to do just that. His name is Dave Lawrence and he and his family have been Mountain Lodge residents since 2006. Dave has been contributing to the newsletter since last fall when he began his column “By My Observations...” where he shares his interesting and witty viewpoint on life. Dave will be assuming the duties of this position beginning with the April issue. As in the past, any comments or articles concerning the monthly newsletter should be sent to his attention at [email protected]. Being editor of the Mountain Lodge Messenger for the past few years has been demanding yet a lot of fun. Please help Dave transition into this position by providing him with the same support and feedback you have provided me. All articles and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Committee Members Needed! The Architectural Control Committee is in need of additional members. The ACC is responsible for ensuring that residents are able to modify and add to their residences while complying with the restrictions of the covenants. The amount of time required by this important committee is minor but the impact is high.  To reduce the time asked of members, reviews are accomplished through emails sent out by the chair. The amount of work is approximately two hours a month for members.  We also have a member of the Board of Directors assigned to help if there are any issues raised by the committee.  For further information please contact JJ Romano at [email protected]

mountain lodge Pool Committee Update We are excited to announce a new pool season here at Mountain Lodge. We know last year there were multiple concerns and complaints from many of you regarding the shortened season and how the pool was managed. Know that your voices were heard and because of that, there have been some major changes for the new season. Not least of which is a new pool management company, Aquatica Pool Management, Inc. First, there will be no lifeguards. This year the pools will be a swim at your own risk status. Children 12 years of age or younger must have an adult (18yrs or older) with them. All safety rules (see additional article) are still in effect. An abbreviated list is posted at poolside of both facilities. Second, there are going to be attendants (not lifeguards) at the pool on eight hour shifts afternoons/evenings and weekends during the school year. During the summer, attendants will be present for eight hours in the afternoon/evenings everyday. These attendants are, among other things, to monitor the pool area, making sure the pumps and pool are working properly, closing the pool up at night, manage the restrooms and trash receptacles and keep the pool areas clean. They are also authorized to enforce the Mountain Lodge and Aquatica rules and regulations. THEY ARE NOT BABYSITTERS AND ARE NOT LIFEGUARDS. Third, we are still working on improvements for both recreation and pool areas. Some will occur this year and some (hopefully) next. As these projects are approved, we will keep you informed of their progress. If you have suggestions on what you’d like to see at the playgrounds, please send them to [email protected] m. Please put ATTN: POOL COMMITTEE in subject line. Fourth, we need artists! Do you have a teen that’s great with paints and a brush? The Seven Winds pool bathrooms need a makeover and we’d love to have murals painted in each of the bathrooms. The theme is Summertime in Texas and would need to cover the long wall opposite the door. If your teen is interested, have them contact us at the pool committee as noted above. Our summer schedule will be May 1-October 16th. The hours will be as follows: Sunday-Thursday: 5 am – 9 pm Friday & Saturday: 5 am – 10 pm Note that neither pool will be ‘closed’ for cleaning. Aquatica assures us they can clean the pools while open for swimming. Thank you for your feedback and patience. We are looking forward to a great summer season here at Mountain Lodge. mountain lodge Cycling from Austin to Alaska to Fight Cancer My name is Will Ragan and I am from Floresville, Texas, a small town just south of San Antonio. I am writing to you today because this summer I am cycling from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska to fight cancer. Yes, you read that correctly. I am not crazy, but am a member of the 2011 LiveSTRONG Texas 4000 for Cancer team. We are a group of fifty-six students from the University of Texas at Austin who is working hard to raise money and awareness for the fight against cancer. Next summer, my team and I will embark upon a 4,500 mile trek across North America in hopes of inspiring communities across the nation to help in the battle against cancer. Starting June 4th, 2011, we will cycle through various communities, make cancer awareness presentations, and educate people on cancer prevention and early detection. By sharing our experiences and enthusiasm, we will work to foster hope among those who are personally suffering from this disease. Additionally, we hope to contribute over $400,000 to cancer research with the American Cancer Society and MD Anderson Cancer Center. Each rider is responsible for raising $4,500. Please consider being a part of our group and sharing in our enthusiasm by making a much appreciated donation. Besides helping in a meaningful cause, your donation will be entirely tax-deductible as we are a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The proceeds from our event will go towards research for finding a cure for our nation’s second leading cause of death. If you are so generous as to make a monetary contribution to support our cause, please send checks to the address below, made payable to Texas 4000 with my name (Will Ragan) on the “payment for” line. I highly encourage you to visit our website, www.texas4000.org, for much more information or contact me with any questions that you may have. If you prefer to donate online you can do so from our team website by clicking on “Donate” and then the “Make a Donation” button and through PayPal, you can make a donation with your credit card. Don’t forget: Put “Will Ragan” in the “Purpose” field, so I can receive credit for your donation. Anything you decide to donate will be greatly appreciated - no amount is too small. Mountain Lodge Howeowner's Association - March 2011

By My Observations… One of my favorite routines in the house is cooking dinner. I cook most nights, and I try to ensure that the menu is nutritious, varied, and in some ways accommodating, since everyone has a favorite dish. I started cooking as a child by helping my mother in the kitchen, and then used the skill to earn a living. When I was in college, I worked as a cook in steak houses and seafood restaurants. I waited tables for a while, but was always more comfortable in the kitchen. Ever since my wife and I have been together, I’ve done most of the cooking. She is a good cook in her own right, but she doesn’t find the task even remotely enjoyable, as do I. So, the job is mine. Sometimes, I am accompanied in my evening routine by my older son. Since he was about three, he has observed me as I’ve cooked and learned quite a bit about food and food preparation. He knows the names of all the vegetables I use including onion, mushrooms, red and green bell peppers, artichoke hearts, green beans, and the herbs thyme, basil, and rosemary to name a few. He also knows how they taste since over time he has sampled each one. He especially likes raw mushrooms. Before I slice them, he picks one up, takes a bite out of it and puts it back in the pile. When I julienne the bell peppers, he always wants a bite. He likes to help stir sauces, taste dishes as they simmer, and offer advice on missing ingredients. “Did you put in enough hosemary?” “Plenty, dude.” He also likes to help me when I barbecue. He has developed quite a palate for baby back ribs, and loves to supervise their preparation. He knows the jalapeño sausage is for mommy and daddy, but he will always eat some “just to make sure it isn’t too spicy.” Lately, he has been quizzing me on the menu for the week. On Sunday, he’ll ask what we are having that night. And then he wants to know about Monday. Then Tuesday. I usually let the game go until about Wednesday since, although I have a menu for the week, I like to change things up every now and then. He usually starts asking again on Thursday. It is nice to see that he is interested, and one day he will be able to really help out in the kitchen. Right now, I’m just happy that he eats vegetables and isn’t too picky – he even likes steamed mussels. He also feels the need to take time to admonish his little brother at the table when he deems it appropriate. For the younger son’s part, he has yet to show any real interest in kitchen activities. He is too busy standing up in his chair, being asked to sit down, refusing, standing up again, and going to time out. Although the other day, he did escape from his pack and play, without a sound. We just heard his little footsteps as he came running through the kitchen, a huge victorious smile on his face. What’s for dinner tomorrow night, daddy? My name is Dave L, and I live in Mountain Lodge. By my observations, life can be fun, hard, tragic, entertaining, or just plain uneventful. And, it is always interesting.
