Volume 3, Issue 6

From the Chair of the Safety Committee Dear Mountain Lodge Community, It has only been a brief time since I accepted my role as the volunteer Safety Chairperson. I have to say that in this short period of time my eyes have been opened more than they have ever been before. Just recently we had a little girl who was hit by a car while on her bicycle in our neighborhood. Along with a few other, we embraced this little girl as she was lying down in the street, staring into the sky while flat on her back. We could not believe what we were seeing. This little girl did not know where she was, and was trying to remember who she was. We were able to obtain her information so we could call her parents while the Fire Department and EMS were on their way. I continued to keep in touch with the family that day and every day after that. She was in the hospital for three days and at present, she is back in school. Fortunately, she walked away with no broken bones and no internal bleeding. For those three days in the hospital her fate was not so clear. Today she is still recovering and getting better every day. This could happen to anyone of us: you, me, and any one of our children. To this day I still see people who ignore stop signs. When I am around and you pass a stop sign, you will know who I am.

I am the one looking at you and pointing at the sign which you just passed. Although the driver stopped after the collision and was visibly shaken, this unfortunate event was entirely preventable. To prevent such future occurrences, we are looking into preventive measures for the safety of each person in our community. All avenues will be researched so that nothing like this will happen again. I am personally looking into the COP program with the Bexar County Sheriff ’s Office. This program will be re-implemented soon with future classes for myself and others who wish to volunteer their time. If you feel you want to volunteer in the future for this COP program, I welcome you to send us an email so that we may provide future information with updates on classes coming soon. It’s simple, caring for each one of us as it should be. Please be safe, and let’s watch out for one other. Sincerely, Mark Sanchez Safety Chairperson Mountain Lodge HOA

Modifications to a home are an added value, whether it’s inside or outside. When making changes to the outside of our homes, we feel great once the work is completed and our eyes get to see the final product. Our homes have a better curb appeal than they ever did in the past. While making modifications to the outside of our homes, we tend to forget guidelines set forth in our covenants. More importantly, we forget to file a request with APMI for review by the ACC. The ACC is responsible for reviewing all requests and making sure they comply with our covenants in a timely manner. The normal turnaround time for any request is 2 weeks. Summer is the best time to make additions since San Antonio weather is always wonderful. It is strongly urged to file a request with our management company (APMI) before committing to any projects to ensure consistency throughout the neighborhood. We all want Mountain Lodge to look beautiful.

mountain lodge New Committee Chairs Pool Committee - Patricia Walters-Fischer has stepped down as Pool Committee Chair. Because of previous commitments she did not feel like she was able to give the pools and playgrounds the attention they needed. The new Committee Chair will be Brooke Miller who also happens to be the manager of the Mountain Lodge swim team. Besides the fact that, in her words, she practically lives at the pool, I think she has the energy, commitment and desire to help improve our Amenity Center facilities. SecondCommunication Committee - The old website is being shut down. Cindy Schofield has agreed to be the webmaster for a new and improved website for Mountain Lodge.  Cindy has some great ideas about what a website should provide the community and her proactive approach is just what the website needs to be successful. She is currently developing this website and once it is up and running our intent is that it will become the place to go for up to date information concerning Mountain Lodge. I want to welcome both of these ladies to the satisfying, although seldom appreciated, group of volunteers that help Mountain Lodge be a great place to live.

mountain lodge It Is Your House Too ! When using the pavilions, please treat them like you were in your own home. It is amazing how much garbage is left on the ground. We’ve found banana peels, gum, melted popsicles, cookies and a variety of unrecognizable food products left all over the place. This does not even include the raw eggs that were thrown into the pavilion on two different occasions. While spending several hours of my own time cleaning these messes up I had time to wonder why people seemed to have no respect for these facilities. I was not able to come up with any kind of a logical answer. Mountain Lodge is where we all have decided to make our home. The Amenity Centers are part of that and we pay money, via the HOA dues, to support these facilities. I am positive that in your own homes you do not leave trash and garbage on the floors. Please treat the Amenity Centers as if they are just another part of your home… for in a way they really are.

By My Observations… We all have dreams growing up. Some of us want to play third base for the Pirates, or dance with the Royal Conservatory. Personally, I wanted to be a drummer in a rock band. When I was little, I drummed on anything I could find, and I drummed all the time. Unfortunately, I tended to get into trouble because of a) the noise, and b) the holes in all of the trash cans. Despite my father’s not-so-subtle admonitions, I continued to drum undaunted. And I was good. I begged my parents to let me take lessons, but they, knowing that lessons would inevitably lead to a request for a drum set, refused. Best to nip this in the bud right now, they must have thought. Fast forward twenty years or so. My wife and I were at my sister’s house for a New Year’s weekend. Another buddy of mine brought his drum set to her house. Tears of unabashed joy welled in my eyes as I sat down behind the kit for the first time. The brutal cacophony that emanated from the shiney black drums re-kindled my passion. I played for three straight days, much to the amusement and chagrin of everyone present. While driving back to Austin, my wife informed me that if I really want a set of drums, we could buy them. At first I was about to say no, but then I think I actually heard (Continued on Page 7)

mountain lodge By My Observations - (Continued from Page 6) what she said. DRUMS?! ABSOLUTLELY!! Two weeks later, I had my owe set and my life has never been the same since. I took lessons, developed technique, and began to really groove. A wonderful stress relief is to plug in the headphones and play along with Judas Priest. As it turns out, both of my sons have an appreciation for the drums. The older boy, when he was much smaller, would pick up a single stick and bang on the floor tom. As he grew, he would sit on my lap to play, and now he can reach the pedals, cymbals, and all drums on his own. Finally it was time for him to take lessons. At first they went well. He was reading sheet music, and learning and playing complex rhythms. Then, daddy got in the way. I was so excited with is progress that I couldn’t see that I was making him practice too long at a stretch. When he would struggle, I would immediately take the sticks and show him what he was doing wrong. Needless to say, it ended poorly. He no longer wanted to take lessons, and I couldn’t understand why not. I was devastated. I pouted. I gave up. During the ensuing months, he continued to play when he felt like it. Finally, I approached him about taking lessons again. He said yes, and I told him that his mother would be helping him with lessons, and I would stay out of the way, unless asked. I had to temper my enthusiasm, but was giddy. I became even giddier when I noticed my younger son picking up the stick and beating on the floor tom – just like his big brother.

Easter Egg Hunt Wrap-up  What an exciting morning we had the day before Easter!  Mountain Lodge had over 1,100 candy filled eggs hidden for all the children to find.  Easter Bunny himself hopped on over to visit the adorable children and take pictures. The beautiful morning began with beverages, breakfast snacks and crafts until the sound of the horn set the kids running for easter eggs!  The turnout was amazing for the first Mountain Lodge Easter Egg Hunt.  Over 300 residents attended!  Special thanks to all our wonderful Social Committee volunteers, we couldn’t do it without you!  Social Committee Co-Chairs Michelle Rosener and Lisa Meylor

I know I’ll never be a drummer in a rock band. I also know that if my sons aren’t either, that is ok with me. My name is Dave L, and I live in Mountain Lodge. By my observations, life can be fun, hard, tragic, entertaining, or just plain uneventful. And, it is always interesting.
