Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg is located in the central Texas Hill Country just a scenic 75 miles northwest of Mountain Lodge. The town was founded in 1846 by German immigrants and still maintains a strong German heritage. Fredericksburg boasts that with over 300 bed & breakfast locations, it is the B&B capital of the world. There are more than 200 unique specialty shops and stores to browse. My personal favorite is Ruslin’ Rob’s where they have hundreds of different gourmet jams, jellies, spreads, salsa, mustard etc that you can sample for free. There are several restaurants on the main ‘drag’ but if you are in the mood for some pretty good German food you might try ‘Der Lindenbaum’ at 312 E. Main Street. Fredericksburg is the birthplace of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz and is the site of the National Museum of the Pacific War – the only museum in the continental United States dedicated to telling the story of the Pacific Theater of World War II. Nimitz served as a naval officer in World War I and as Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Pacific Forces in World War II. Toward the end of his active career he also served as Chief of Naval Operations. The museum is located on six acres and includes the George H. W. Bush Gallery, Admiral Nimitz Museum, Plaza of the Presidents, Veterans’ Walk of Honor, Japanese Garden of Peace, Pacific Combat Zone, and the Nimitz Education and Research Center. The George H.W. Bush Gallery has just gone through an extensive renovation (43,000 sq.

ft. expansion) and was completed on December 7th 2009. If you can go on a weekend you may be able to see a reenactment of an assault on a Japanese pillbox by volunteers authentically uniformed and armed as Marines of 1944 - including flamethrowers, machine guns and a tank. Tickets & information are at the Nimitz hotel on Main Street. If you take Hwy 281 north to Johnson City and then take Hwy 290 west you will pass several wineries as you get closer to Fredericksburg. Some of them have better wines than the others but all are fun to stop in and try sample tastings of their wines. If you stop at only one I suggest the Becker Vineyards where you can sample some very fine Hill Country wines. Also, just a few miles before you get to Fredericksburg you will come to the Wildseed Farm on your right. Be sure to stop here to see the beautiful fields of wild flowers (if in season) and to visit their store and garden center. As you continue west on into town you will find yourself on Main Street which is the heart of the shopping district. Fredericksburg and the surrounding areas are packed with many things to see and do and realistically you cannot do it all in one daytrip. The museum complex is a first class experience and one you must see. I would suggest that at least one trip to Fredericksburg be dedicated just to visit the museums. Visit the following sites for more information: Fredericksburg http://www.fredericksburg-texas.com/ Fredericksburg http://www.fredericksburgtexas-online.com/ National Museum http://www.nationalmuseumpacificwar.org/ Nimitz Museum http://www.nimitz-museum.org/ Wildseed Farm http://www.wildseedfarms.com/ Ruslin’ Robs http://rustlinrob.com/ At no time will any source be allowed to use The Mountain Lodge Messenger contents, or loan said contents, to others in anyway, shape or form, nor in any media, website, print, film, e-mail, electrostatic copy, fax, or etc. for the purpose of solicitation, commercial use, or any use for profit, political campaigns, or other self amplification, under penalty of law without written or expressed permission from Peel, Inc. mountain lodge Do You Like Free Software? Hey, everybody likes free software – just be careful what you get.  Enter anything you want into a Google search with the word FREE and all kinds of things will show up.  If you’re not careful, you can download a FREE VIRUS – how’s that for a deal? For you readers, here are a few of my favorite free software choices that won’t get you into trouble: For Windows machines, I like Picasa for doing simple editing and cleanup of photos.  It’s from the folks at Google and you can find it just by going to www.Picasa.com (note that it’s Picasa ending with an “a” and not Picasso like the painter with the additional “s””.  Do you shop online and like to keep the receipts?  Rather than printing them out and storing them in a filing cabinet, use CutePDF to “print” your receipts (or anything else that can be sent to a printer) into a PDF file that you can save on your hard drive.  I buy a lot online and CutePDF lets me store all the receipts into a folder on my hard drive that makes life much easier at tax time for my accountant (which is this month if my calendar is correct.)  You can download CutePDF at www.CutePDF.com, just download the CutePDF Writer.  It installs as if it were a printer and you’re ready to go. For the Mac, Anxiety is a useful to-do list manager to (hopefully) reduce the stress in your life in getting all the things you need to get

done, done.  It works with iCal and Mail.  You can download it at http://www.anxietyapp.com/.   Carbon Copy Cloner lets you backup your entire hard drive to another, allowing you to boot to the 2nd drive should the first one fail completely (and it happens more often than you know.)  Download it at http://www.bombich.com/.  Stay away from sites offering free music or movies (like LimeWire), this is an excellent way to contract a virus.  If you think you’re getting something that costs money in a store for free online, it’s probably going to cost you more than you know by the time you get your computer cleaned  up. Be skeptical and be safe.  One of the best places to go for free software is http://sourceforge.net/.  You’re not going to find Microsoft Office for free, but you might find a program that does something close.  Want Photoshop but don’t have $400 to spend, then check out Gimp.  There are a lot of genuinely nice people developing programs because they enjoy doing it.  Some will ask for but not require a donation, that’s only fair.  If you like a program, throw a few dollars their way to encourage them to keep improving their program.  If you can say “I wish I had a program that ……..”, then you’ll probably find something at SourceForge.net that meets your needs. - Submitted by Laurie Scott
