Moving timeline 2 MONTHS PRIOR TO MOVING DAY

2 WEEKS PRIOR TO MOVING DAY

Decide on and book a moving company or truck rental

Arrange to have utilities disconnected at your old home and connected at your new one

Create a floor plan of your new home for furniture and appliance placement

Cancel the newspaper

Make inventory of your household goods and begin removing clutter

Check with your condo or co-op about restrictions on using the elevator or particular exits

Have antiques, pieces of art, and other valuables appraised

Ask friends for introductions to anyone they know in your neighborhood

Start a file for all your moving paperwork (estimates, receipts, etc.)

Consider special car needs for pets when traveling

Get your new home ready– Contact painters, carpenters, plumbers, roofers, etc. so they are ready to work as soon as you close. Remember to change the locks on all the doors in your new home

Fill out post office change-of-address cards

Let a friend or relative know your route

Join Facebook groups and create online subscriptions for news sources in your new neighborhood or city to learn more about your new community Make arrangements for storage if necessary Ask your doctor or health plan provider for referrals, and obtain all medical records, including copies of medical and dental records and prescriptions for your family and your pets

Change the locks on all exterior doors of your new home Empty your safety deposit box

Carry traveler's checks or an ATM card for ready cash until you can open a bank account Put plants in boxes with holes for air circulation if you're moving in cold weather

Get copies of children's school records for transfer Develop a list of friends, relatives, and business colleagues who need to be notified of the move Clean all closets and drawers Start using up food and cleaning supplies you won't want to move Notify your credit card companies, magazine subscriptions, and bank of the change of address
