Music Ministry Update

Prince of Peace is a … • Hub of spiritual transformation using God’s Word, Sacrament, and Prayer, • Equipping us to build networks of vibrant Christian communities, • Extending to our homes, to our neighbors, and beyond, making disciples of Jesus. Vol. 19 No. 7 February 13, 2016

www.poplc.org

As announced at the Town Hall meeting in January, the Music Ministry has been slated to be a major topic of discussion at the next Town Hall meeting, which will be held the weekend of April 2-3. Leading up to that discussion, Pastor Gnewuch will hold a forum to discuss the music ministry on Saturday, March 5th at 9:00 a.m. Additionally, he is asking the Exploratory Team to make a recommendation regarding the leadership of the music ministry program by researching and answering the following question: Should we enter the call process to fill the full-time position of Minister of Music that Dr. Wally Horton held or should we form a Music Ministry Team of part-time leaders who would work together to continue the growth and expansion of our current ministry? The Exploratory Team will seek to answer this question through surveys and interviews with the current music ministry leaders and participants, our staff, and our members. They will consider:  

the expressed needs of Prince of Peace. the history of both leadership models at Prince of Peace and how the models work at other churches.  the expertise expected from the leaders and the availability of leadership under both models. Pastor Gnewuch is asking the Exploratory Team to report on its findings at the next Town Hall meeting. The congregation will have the opportunity to consider and respond to the findings after the Town Hall meeting. The findings and responses of the congregation will be used to decide whether Pastor Gnewuch should form a Call Committee to bring in a full-time music ministry leader or develop a Music Ministry Team with part-time leaders.

Mid-Week Lenten Services Our mid-week services will be on Wednesdays at noon and 7:30 p.m. The noon service will include Holy Communion. Please also find Lenten devotional resources on the credenza outside of the Sanctuary.

Forum Will be Held This Saturday February 13th, 9 a.m., Fellowship Hall

A Forum will be held this Saturday in the Fellowship Hall beginning at 9am to discuss in greater detail the Specific Ministry Program (SMP) and proposed campus renovations. The SMP provides seminary training leading to ordination for service as a pastor. The goal is to provide pastoral care for church plants and ministry groups at Prince of Peace. The proposed campus renovations include renovation of the Fellowship Hall for better capacity and use and renovation of the Narthex for appearance and repair. Our parking areas will also be discussed. The Forum is being held in advance of a special

Voters’ Meeting, slated for Tuesday, February 23 at 7:00 pm.

Leaning Into Shalom

Last week David Mahen, Jeff Crosson, and myself attended a four-day conference on the theme of missional living and leading. The time was uniquely spent - not on learning a new program to implement here at Prince of Peace (which would require more time doing ministry and making our already busy lives busier) – but focused on intentionally living in shalom with no agenda except to see our neighborhoods and cities as God sees them and respond in love. Understanding shalom as simply peace, or the lack of conflict, misses its rich Hebrew meaning. Shalom is derived from a root denoting wholeness or completeness. Reflect for a moment on the implications of this definition on the life of a Christian. How would your life be different if you let shalom take hold of you? How would it impact our ministry at Prince of Peace (Shalom)? Missional living is living daily, minute by minute, in the reality that I am complete and whole in Christ. Keith and Kristyn Getty sing about it: “In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song; this Cornerstone, this solid Ground…My Comforter, my All in All, here in the love of Christ I stand.” So why do we continue to chase after other pursuits for our source of completeness and wholeness? Each of us needs to answer this question for ourselves. As we lean into the shalom of Christ, we embody peace - becoming people of peace – with the unique opportunity to see our neighborhoods and cities as God sees them and respond in the love of Christ. Missional living is where we are heading and we invite you to journey with us. It’s not about adding more. It’s about living contentment and purpose where you are. [email protected]

1 Peter 2:5 -you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Share Your Heart, Buy A Heart Did you know that February is "Hearts 4 Haiti" month? The Village of Hope Haiti offers free Christian education to over 600 students and a Health Center for the local community. All the support for the Village of Hope comes from congregations and members in the United States. Prince of Peace has a mission trip planned February 9-14, 2017 and our daughter church, Vine and Branches, will be going April 20-25, 2016. Both trips have open spots; if you are interested please contact Tiffany Sears in the church office. For as little as $5, $10, or $20 you can make a tremendous difference in the lives of these children of God! Share your heart by buying a "Heart 4 Haiti!" Prince of Peace recently received an iNeighborhood grant from the Southeastern District to implement a Digital Streaming Ministry that would enable PoP to share the good news of Jesus Christ with the world through media and technology. This Digital Streaming ministry will provide a way for people to listen or watch a video in real time via the internet through a digital device like a smartphone or computer. We are in the process of mobilizing congregational volunteers to stream and archive worship services, mission and ministry moments, and content from our various weekday and weekend classes and ministries. The SED has shared their resources with us so that we can reach people with the Word today while capturing content to help sustain new neighborhood outreach ministries into the future. The grant received has been used to purchase equipment to support this outreach initiative and to cover a one year subscription to a streaming platform.

First Communion Class Sundays, February 21, 28 and March 6, 2:30pm, Room 27 Prince of Peace offers the First Communion Class series several times during the year so that younger children can benefit from the powerful resources that Jesus provides in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. The class is designed for children from 3rd through 6th grade. Because our classes are designed for children and their parents, the students are always accompanied by at least one parent. It is important that children and a parent attend all three classes in the series. We can accommodate 10 children in a class with their parents. If we have more than 10 students, we plan to offer an additional class later in the year so that we can accommodate everyone. [email protected]

Grow Spiritually in 2016 with Prayer Partners Have you started working on your New Year’s Resolutions? Are ‘grow spiritually’ and ‘build a new or stronger relationship with someone at Prince of Peace’ on the list? Here is an easy way to check off both! The men’s and women’s ministries are starting a Prayer Partner program in January. The requirements are simple: pray for and/or with your prayer partner. The Bible directs us to “Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.” Eph 6:18 Kerri Grimes ([email protected]) will be matching the women and Bo Grimes will do the same for the men ([email protected]). We will initially match those who have emailed us by February 22nd, and we’ll continue to match partners as we get names.

Wednesday Morning Women of the Word has had the awesome opportunity to witness two adult baptisms in the past two months! Lily Zamanuel was baptized on December 9 and Haidong (Helen) Qiao was baptized on February 3. Both were invited by friends to attend WoW and have been attending Bible study classes regularly.

Haidong baptized on February 3 with her sponsors by her side. Haidong asked to be baptized after attending WoW Bible Study for years under the leadership of Sarah Sherwood and specifically, after hearing an invitation to be baptized at our kick off event on January 13.

As God's Word says, "My word goes out from my mouth: it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it." (Isaiah 55:11) Our God is awesome and we praise Him! In the coming weeks, Lily and Xaidong will share their faith story so stay tuned.

Pastor Carl handing Lily her baptismal candle on December 9 at her baptism. Each year this baptismal candle is re-lit as a reminder of God’s saving grace.

Please keep in prayer the 35 women who will be attending “Leading from the Heart” on February 26-28 at Meadowkirk Retreat Center in Middleberg, Virginia. Pray they will not experience spiritual attack as they prepare for the retreat and the path remains clear for all to attend.

Faith Stories Sharing your faith story is an integral component in living out your faith. Your individual story makes up the greater story—the story of God’s redeeming his people for himself. Our stories encourage other believers while God also uses them to reach those not yet connected to Him. You can share your stories by writing them in the “Friendship Folder” at any worship service, or post your story as a comment on the http://popfaithstories.wordpress.com, or by sending an e-mail to [email protected].
