Ephesians 5:21-25 NLT “And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church. As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything. For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her…” ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________

Jesus as the model of Voluntary __________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ Philippians 2:5-11 NLT “You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

John 10:18 NLT “No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has commanded.”

Guiding Principle #1 A wife is never to give her husband __________________________________ obedience, but is to use her gifts and strengths to _____________________.

2. Jesus as the Model of Voluntary ____________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ John 13:12-17 NLT After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked, “Do you understand what I was doing? You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message. Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them.

Romans 15:2-3a NLT We should help others do what is right and build them up in the Lord. For even Christ didn’t live to please himself.

Apprenticeship Prayer Partner Questions 1. Consider how Jesus lived a life of continual, joyful submission to the Father. When was the last time you joyfully laid down your desires and preferences for the sake of someone else? What might a habit of this look like in your life?

2. Consider how Jesus used his power and position only for the

purpose of serving others. What strength has God given you that you could use for someone else’s benefit (and not just your own)?
