Just days after the Civil War is over, President Lincoln is shot by John Wilkes Booth. Here, he lies in State in the East Room of the White House.

President Abraham Lincoln takes office after seven states had already seceded from the Union. Four more states would secede within his first month of being president.

After a victory on the battlefield at Antietam, Maryland, the President meets with his Cabinet to discuss the document which would free slaves in the southern states.

Victory! President Lincoln is elected to a second term of office. In this picture, he is making his Inaugural Address at the United States Capitol building.

Soldiers are needed to guard the White House after the Union loses the first major battle of the war at Manassas, Virginia.
