MY ELYSON PICKLEBALL ANYONE?

YOUR VOICE WAS HEARD

The pickleball court in Elyson’s newest park off Elyson Fa l l s D r i v e , just outside the entrance to the Drees patio home neighborhood, will be opening soon. If you are not familiar with pickleball, it is a racquet sport that borrows elements from tennis, ping pong and badminton. Pickleball is easy to learn and is also considered easier on the joints since the court is smaller than a tennis court. It is a perfect cross-generational sport allowing every member of the family to get in on the fun. The court will not be fenced and there will be no online reservation system like the tennis courts so please be courteous to others who are waiting to play.

There were some issues with the air conditioning at the Elyson House this summer. We were finally able to find a contractor who traced the issue to the Elyson Café kitchen vent system. The problem appears to be fixed and the Welcome Center and Café are cooling properly. For those of you who visited the Café and experienced hot temperatures, please come back and enjoy all it has to offer, especially the Friday night dinners and music. It is a great time to relax and visit with neighbors. Effective September 1st, there will be a new cleaning company at Elyson House. The company is Signature Cleaning Concepts, a family owned and operated Katy area business. The bid was actually lower than the previous cleaning company and we are hopeful you will notice improved service.

NEW UH KATY CAMPUS University of Houston Breaks Ground on New Katy Campus The University of Houston plans to build on its longtime presence in Katy by breaking ground on a new campus at the Northeast corner of Grand Parkway and I-10, just a few miles from Elyson. UH broke ground on this campus Mid-2018 and expects it to be completed by the fall of 2019. The 80,000-square-foot building at UH Katy will be constructed on 46 acres in a growing area known as University Center, next to Katy Asian Town. Students will take classes from the UH College of Nursing and the UH Cullen College of Engineering, as well as the University of Houston-Victoria at Katy.

MY ELYSON JOHN PAUL’S LANDING PARK With the temperatures starting to fall, it’s the perfect time to take the family to John Paul’s Landing Park, one of Katy’s biggest parks. Opened this spring, the 850-acre park is located on West Road, between the Grand Parkway and Katy Hockley Cut Off Road, less than 4 miles from Elyson. The park features three distinct areas, all connected by a walking trail. Amenities include playgrounds, picnic pavilions and a 150-acre fishing lake stocked with bass, catfish, crappie and sunfish. An environmental education center is under construction and scheduled to open in early 2019 at the park. It will include a classroom area, a great room and exhibits to help visitors learn about the area’s native vegetation and ecosystem. It will also have demonstration gardens displaying some of the many ecosystems found in Texas.

DID YOU KNOW? There are guidelines for the installation of outdoor lighting in Elyson? For landscape lighting the guidelines state “landscape lighting must be located at ground level in flowerbeds and must luminate white”. We have noticed homeowners are installing lights and lining driveways and sidewalks. The Board has instructed the management company to send letters asking that the lights be relocated to the mulched landscape beds in order to comply with the guidelines. You can find a copy of the guidelines on www.myelyson.com under the HOA tab - Documents/Meetings/Budgets. Copyright © 2018 Peel, Inc.

MY ELYSON TIPS FOR PACKING A HEALTHY SCHOOL LUNCH By Stephany Pando, cooksmarts.com, edited for space beans or nuts (be aware of nut allergy regulations at your child’s school). •

Low-fat dairy: milk, cheese or yogurt

Whole Grains: pita, sandwich bread, tortillas, wraps, and pastas

Tip#5: Encourage Hydration It’s recommended that school-aged kids drink between 6-8 cups of water a day (even more in hot weather or if their activity level is high). Packing lunches for your back-to-schoolers is no easy task. It takes time and planning. Plus, every parent knows that just because you pack it, doesn’t guarantee your kids will actually eat it. However, this doesn’t mean you have to fill your kids’ lunchboxes with pizza and cookies everyday. Below we offer 5 tips for how to pack a nutritious lunch that your kids will look forward to eating and you’ll feel good about giving them. Tip #1: Get Your Kids Involved • Give your kids healthy food options from each food group and let them make the final decisions on what goes in their lunch. •

Take your child grocery shopping with you and let them have a say (to a certain extent) in what goes into the cart. This promotes feelings of responsibility and empowerment.

Designate a part of your kitchen as the “lunch packing station” and spend some time there with your kids the night before to get lunch ready for the next day.

Tip #2: Turn Healthy Foods into Fun Foods • Use cookie cutters to make shapes out of bread, deli meat, cheese, or a melon-baller for fruit. •

Use kid-friendly skewers to make colorful food kebabs.

Create a theme for the day and have all of the foods in their lunch relate to the theme

Tip #3: Make Your Own Snacks – and limit processed ones Kids rely on snacks to keep their energy up, but the type of snack is important to consider. Packaged snacks tend to lack important nutrients and can be high in sugar, sodium and saturated fats. Take control of what is in your kids’ snacks by making them yourself! Tip #4: Incorporate All Food Groups A balanced diet includes all of the food groups. Luckily, there are so many different ways to enjoy each food group: •

Fruits: fresh, frozen, dried, canned, baked (think apple chips!) or pureed.

Vegetables: fresh, frozen, or baked (think kale chips!)

Lean protein: baked chicken, deli meats, hard boiled eggs,
