Bidelman’s Tannery: Originally constructed by James and Elihu Mather, this tannery was located along the Ridge Road in Gaines just east of Route 279. Samuel Bidelman of Ridgeway purchased this building in 1835 and operated the business until 1873 when the property burned. For many years, the second floor of the structure served as the town offices for Gaines and once housed the local Masonic Lodge.

Empire Couch Company: Built around 1901, this 40’ x 140’ factory including a mill and shed facilitated the construction of furniture for the Empire Couch Company, previously of Middleport. The company was forced to abandon this facility around 1913 when the Erie Canal was expanded. Pictured to the left is a segment of the Oak Orchard River. The canal is not visible but was situated on the front side of this factory. The company remained in operation until the early 1930s when the failure of the Central Bank in Medina forced its closure.

Ridgeway Dry House: Taken in 1910, this image shows workers from a dry house near Ridgeway Corners. Dry houses were essential for preserving apples and other fruits but the structures were prone to devastating fires. Asa K. Jennings, a Methodist minister from Webster who was credited with rescuing 350,000 Greek, Armenian, and Jewish refugees during the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922, operated a dry house at Ridgeway Corners as a young man.

Fowler’s Store: Situated on the site of Narby’s Superette at “The Bridges” in Carlton, this building served as a general store and hotel during the larger portion of the 19th century. Standing on the porch to the left is George W. Root proprietor of the hotel and standing below the G. D. Fowler sign is Gifford D. Fowler who operated the store for a short period of time in the 1880s. This location was the center of community events during its heyday and the store doubled as a post office prior to the days of rural delivery routes.

Chevrolet – CadillaC inC. mark of excellence Hulberton Quarries: One of the largest industries in the history of Orleans County was the quarrying of Medina Sandstone from the 1830s through the early portion of the 20th century. These men, many whom were likely immigrants from Italy, used dynamite, teams of horses, and hand tools to remove the blocks of stone from these quarries. The work was dangerous and difficult, but the returns for quarry owners were great.

John Peters Harness Shop: Established in 1903, John G. Peters operated a harness shop in Medina for nearly ten years before removing his business to Lyndonville. Harness shops were essential prior to the widespread use of automobiles and remained valuable afterwards as farmers continued to use horses for work and transportation. The most noticeable feature of the shop is the large horse mannequin that was used to display harnesses, saddles, and other goods. The tools and equipment from this shop were donated to the Cobblestone Museum in the 1960s.

Reynolds & Flintham: Cassius M.C. Reynolds (left) and William S. Flintham (right) operated this partnership on North Main Street in Albion. The two specialized in the sale of crockery, glassware, and furniture, but also doubled as undertakers at a time before embalming was common practice. This business was later sold to J. B. Merrill of Holley and would eventually transform into Merrill-Grinnell Funeral Homes.

Students in Mr. Doug Mergler’s technology classes studied the topic of engineering. They focused on transportation technology and how friction, propulsion and aerodynamics work together to develop an efficient vehicle. Each student used the principles they learned to design a prototype of (L-R): Phontasia Blackmon, Jylees Burmudez and a CO2 car using the CAD (ComputerBrittany Spies-Hunt are ready for the CO2 car race. Aided Design) program. The car designs had to meet certain specifications for height, length, eye spacing and wheelbase. Once their designs were approved, students built their own cars out of a single piece of wood (standard 2” x 4”) and competed against classmates to see whose car was the fastest. The top 12 winners will attend “Tech Wars 2017” on Jan. 11, 2017, at Niagara County Community College, where they will compete against more than 80 middle school students from the region in the Short Track CO2 Car Race.

Many business skills are applicable in the nonprofit sector.

Exploring Careers in Philanthropy The growing number of nonprofit organizations and other philanthropic groups has made opportunities for careers in philanthropy more plentiful. Those with professional business experience or even students right out of college often find opportunities within organizations geared to giving back. According to Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, there are more than 1.4 million nonprofit organizations in the United States alone. These organizations need dedicated staff to run their operations, and employees of such nonprofits often find there are several advantages to working for charitable organizations. • Happier work environments: Working in philanthropy means improving other people’s lives. Employees may be happy in their positions because they realize their work is part of a larger effort to help the less fortunate. The nonprofit sector will attract other like-minded people, and working alongside people with similar interests can make for a more enjoyable workplace environment. • Diverse responsibilities: Nonprofit operations are generally smaller than many other companies, and employees often find themselves with diverse responsibilities and more direct access to management and other decision makers. People interested in dabbling in various parts of a business may find the often intimate nature of the nonprofit sector an ideal fit. • Opportunities for travel: Some nonprofits offer the chance to work outside of the country. Nonprofit organizations who work across the globe may help build homes or schools in less developed countries or establish arts and education programs in countries where such opportunities are lacking. A job in the nonprofit sector may allow people to experience new cultures and opportunities that may never present themselves in the private sector. • Growth opportunities: Wearing a variety of hats, as many nonprofit employees do on a regular basis, allows those working at nonprofit organizations to build their resumes in ways not available to men and women working at more structured companies. People who work in the nonprofit sector often find that their careers are rewarding for a variety of reasons. n

ORLEANS COUNTY SPORTSMEN HELP LOCAL EAGLES By Douglas H. Domedion One of the local pair of bald eagles has been having some serious problems with their nest for New platform for eagle next finished! the last few years. This nest is in one of our local WMA’s and was established in 2010 and has been a very successful one along with being unique. It had the honor of being the last eagle nest tree Peter Nye (the guy, along with Mike Allen, who brought the bald eagle back to NYS) climbed before he retired. Pete climbed every nest in NYS each year to evaluate the health of the eaglets and band them. At the end of his career he was climbing close to 200 nests in the short period of time during the mid-summer. The second unique thing about this nest is that about three years ago an immature eagle was allowed to join the nesting pair of eagles. Usually eagles are very territorial around their nests and drive all other eagles away. For some unknown reason this immature eagle was not and actually participated in the incubation and raising of the eaglets. This nest is built in a huge oak tree and is out on one of the bigger limbs which had a snag off of it that helped support the nest. Eagles build very large nests from sticks and they generally use the same nest every year, adding to its size annually. Eventually the nest will get so big it actually can cause the tree to fall over! Sometimes they build an “alternate” nest within their territory because something happened at the original nest they didn’t like the year before. In 2013, that supporting snag on this nest broke off sending the nest crashing to the ground. The eaglets in the nest were barely old enough to fly, but they did and survived. The adults rebuilt the nest the next year, but it was difficult with out that support and the next nesting season it again fell, again just when the eaglets were able to somewhat fly. In 2015, the same thing happened and I began to get nervous that we were going to lose some eaglets eventually. In December 2015, the DEC hired a group of tree climbers to go up and reinforce the nest. However they did a very poor job and recently that nest fell again. You may wonder “Why don’t they just build a nest in another tree?” Eagles require a very particular type of tree, one that is tall and dominant and has the right kind of supporting limbs to build on, plus it must be open enough that the birds can fly in and out to the nest with their 6 and a half- to 7-foot wing span. In the case of this pair of eagles, there really isn’t another such tree available in their territory, so they keep returning to this one. Earlier in December I checked this nest out, which I usually do to all the eagle nests after a bad wind storm, and not to my surprise I found it down again. I put a request out for tree climbers in one of my recent columns in hopes that we could get this spot stabilized correctly. Charlie Barnes, a past climber and sportsman from Shelby offered his services. With approval from the DEC, Charlie and I went out and checked the situation out. We drew up some plans to build a solid platform from what we saw from under the tree and went shopping for the material. On Dec. 13, along with several DEC personnel and several sportsmen volunteers, we hauled lumber and equipment back to the nest tree, but shortly after Charlie reached the nest area up in the tree the wind came up and the project had to be called off. A few days later I received a call from another climber and sportsman from Orleans County that said he and his son would like to help with the project. This was great as it was quite a job for three climbers yet alone one. On Dec. 21, we gathered early in the morning to head for the nest with our volunteers and got “her done!” We didn’t have too bad of a wind, but temperatures were around 30° and at 60 feet it was a rough job for the climbers. At about 2 p.m., the job was completed with bundle of the fallen nest sticks hauled back up into the new platform. These sportsmen volunteers are to commended for the terrific job they did. When sent a picture of the end results to Peter Nye a big “WOW, GREAT!” approval came back! DEC personnel Heidi Kennedy, Denise Appleby, and Bill Wolanske pitched in with the project as did sportsmen Bob and Mike Elam. The Orleans County sportsmen climbers were Charlie Barnes, Greg Rosato, and his son Brett. My contact information is 585-798-4022 or [email protected]

LEGAL ARRANGEMENt In a “legal separation,” the court issues a formal judgment that mandates the rights and duties (including spousal and child support) of a married couple that is living apart. Property division during legal separation and divorce is typically determined by the couple’s situation and how it relates to the property. This option is usually sought by those who want to stay married for legal reasons or do not wish to wait the state statutory waiting period for termination of marital status. For others, a legal separation sets up the parameters for dealing with one another while living separate and apart, maintaining the status of being married and considering the possibility of reconciliation. Separation and divorce are both difficult, emotionally. There’s no need to make them more complicated, legally. Let the compassionate lawyers at the Law Office of MACK & PACE help you. We have the experience that you want and the understanding that you deserve during this difficult time. In addition, we can help if you need legal advice on other aspects of family law, including adoption, prenuptial agreements, and child custody agreements. Call to make an appointment right away.

On Dec. 7, 2016, at 12:40 p.m., the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Medina man on several charges related to an accident in the Town of Albion. Joshua M. Quackenbush, 30, of Church Street, Medina, N.Y., was reportedly traveling westbound on East Lee Road when his vehicle left the north side of the roadway, entered a ditch, continued on and struck a posted sign, a tree and railroad ties used as driveway markers. shop, more affordable. One growing trend in decorating with antiques is the use of vintage signs as artwork or even to serve as cabinet doors or headboards. Vintage signs lend well to kitchens and bathrooms but can be used throughout a home as well. Few things can compare to the drama, color and unique typography provided by antique signs. And they can be used with cottage decor or even in more contemporary homes. Those shopping for vintage signs may have noticed that the increase in demand for such signage has led to an increase in price. However, there are still bargains to be had with regard to vintage signs. Savvy shoppers often begin their quests for vintage signs at estate and garage sales. Many times people stash away old belongings in attics and basements, unaware that vintage items are highly valuable to others. Shoppers can find great deals on vintage signs at estate and garage sales. Bargains also can be found at store closings and liquidations. You may even be able to purchase the actual sign from the shuttered store. Online auctions are another place to search for vintage signs. Buyers can bid on signs offered at auction and have many options to choose from. Keep in mind that you may pay more for the convenience of online auctions, and other shoppers can quickly drive up auction prices. Antique shops are another venue for antique signs and coordinating pieces. Some sellers specialize in vintage signage. Antique stores are popular in many tourist towns and major cities, where more artistic neighborhoods tend to include one or more antique shops. If a particular antique store does not have what you are looking for, they may be able to secure certain pieces you desire from other vendors. Shoppers looking for antique signs also can purchase reproductions. There are many retailers that produce very good likenesses that may be considerably more affordable than the originals. You also can commission an artist to reproduce signage that fits with your design plans. Some research online or a query of artists in your community may yield prospects who can produce the sign you covet. Decorating with vintage signs and other artwork becomes much easier when you know where to start your search for materials. Scouring sales, antique stores and even online auctions can generally produce a bevy of options. n

One way to reduce television bills is to scale back on your cable package. Cut premium channels and look for a basic package of channels. Some people are cutting the cable cord altogether, opting for just Internet service and then subscribing to streaming options offered by Netflix, Hulu, Sling, and other providers. More than 800,000 people in the United States dropped pay TV packages in the second quarter of 2016, according to the research firm SNL Kagan.

Red meat has a bad reputation because it can be high in fat and cholesterol. However, choosing the right cuts, such as lean eye round roast and sirloin, can offset the negative aspects of red meat. There’s also evidence that grass-fed beef contains two to five times more omega-3 fatty acids than grain-fed beef. · Macaroni and cheese: Macaroni and cheese is the No. 1 cheese recipe in the United States and has remained on the list of America’s top 10 comfort foods for decades.
