NMR. The ASC24 is a 24-position sample changer that improves unattended NMR workflows by allowing researchers to program the selection of sample tubes. The controls are automatically updated whenever upgrades for the system are available. Because the lightweight aluminum carousel is interchangeable, users can prepare additional carousels with sample holders ahead of time. The software detects and prevents loading errors. Additional holders that have 8-, 16-, and 64-sample capacity are also available. JEOL USA

INSTRUMENTATION MS. The LTQ Orbitrap hybrid mass spectrometer is a new electrostatic ion trap that offers a large ion capacity, stable and robust operation, and high trapping efficiencies. No internal calibration is required, and the hybrid instrument provides subfemtomole sensitivity. The instrument has multiple ionization modes. The LTQ Orbitrap is useful for identifying compounds in complex mixtures and is an alternative to TOFMS. Thermo Electron MS. The 4-GHz Fastflight-2 digital signal averager acquires data at rates up to 100 spectra/s in GC/TOF and LC/ TOF mass spectrometers. The averager acquires analog output from the microchannel plate detector during each scan. The instrument then rapidly sums scans together, producing an averaged TOFMS spectrum with high S/N. The averager includes comprehensive software for data acquisition and data analysis. Signal Recovery Ultracentrifugation. The Focus proteomics separation system fractionates organelles by proteomics continuous-flow ultracentrifugation separation. With this system, researchers can enrich samples, isolate low-abundance components, and separate compound subtypes. Organelles can be separated without their components becoming damaged. The enriched proteins can be analyzed 360 A

by 2DE after they are separated by the Focus system. Alfa Wasserman

Spectrometer. The QE65000 is a highly sensitive, modular spectrometer that has high S/N and is ideal for Raman analysis and other low-light-level applications, such as fluorescence and DNA sequencing. The instrument processes signals rapidly and can achieve up to 90% quantum efficiency. Users can optimize the spectrometer’s range and resolution by choosing different gratings and entrance slits. SOFTWARE Metabolomics and proteomics. MarkerView software allows researchers to analyze large, complex metabolomics and proteomics data sets for protein, peptide, and metabolic pattern changes. These changes can indi-

cate important disease or drug biomarkers. MarkerView includes features such as chromatographic peak picking and alignment. Researchers can also perform principal components analysis with the program. The software is compatible with all mass spectrometers sold by Applied Biosystems/MDS Sciex.

Applied Biosystems Protein identification. Scaffold is a suite of software tools that enables researchers to extract more detailed and accurate information from Sequest or Mascot results. The tools allow easy importing of mass spectra, and users can store multiple data sets in one file. Visual comparisons between samples can be easily performed. With Scaffold tools, data from one search algorithm can be run through other search algorithms to obtain increased confidence in identifications. Proteome Software

COLUMNS HPLC columns. XBridge HPLC columns are efficient and improve pH stability and column reliability for reversed-phase chromatography. The columns use ethylene-bridged hybrid particles that combine the properties of silica-based materials with those of polymer packing materials. Because of their high pH stability, the columns open up a wide variety of buffer choices to researchers for HPLC separations. The columns are available in three particle sizes (2.5, 3.5, and 5 µm) and four different chemistries (C18, C8, shield RP18, and phenyl). Waters
