Cell culture. MACCS is an automated cell culture system that offers a reliable and cost-effective solution for several applications. The system is flexible and modular, so it can work with T-flasks, Roboflasks, shaker and spinner flasks, microwell plates, and roller bottles. A consistent cell supply is ensured with on-line monitoring capabilities. A sterile environment is maintained with vaporized hydrogen peroxide and HEPA filtration. MACCS includes a robotic arm that allows for gentle, high-throughput processing of cell cultures and consumables. In addition, the system can maintain a uniform temperature and steady carbon dioxide and humidity levels. MatriCal

Molecular interactions. The FluoroPoint single-molecule fluorescence detection system has high sensitivity, uses low sample volumes, and is easy to operate. Accurate and reliable data on processes such as protein–protein interactions, receptor binding, enzyme reactions, polymerization, and thermodynamics are possible with FluoroPoint. The system is compatible with 384-well plates and can provide results for sample volumes as small as 30 μL. Unlike other techniques, such as surface plasmon resonance, FluoroPoint can perform single-molecule analyses in physiologically relevant environments. Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, molecular brightness, and confocal anisotropy measurements are all available with the instrument.

Electron microscopy. The NeoScope benchtop scanning electron microscope (SEM) complements optical microscopes and traditional SEMs. The NeoScope is easily operated and provides high-magnification images with high resolution and a large depth of field. Conductive and nonconductive samples can be imaged without special preparation. It operates in low- and highvacuum modes and includes three settings for accelerating voltage suitable for a variety of applications.

Solvent extraction. The ASE 350, an accelerated solvent extractor, uses a combination of elevated temperature and pressure with common solvents to extract organic compounds from a variety of solid and semisolid materials. The ASE 350 is faster and uses less solvent than other extraction methods, such as sonication and shaking. The Smart Run integrated solvent controller prevents the mismatch of cells and collection vials and can be programmed to rinse with different solvents between samples. Dionex

Capillary coupling. The Meltfit

Software. Biacore T100 software version 2.0 is now available. The software works with the Biacore T100 label-free protein interaction analysis system, and it allows researchers to perform calibration-free concentration analysis (known as CFCA) of proteins. Therefore, for the first time, users can measure protein concentration without a standard. With the single-cycle kinetics function, the software reduces the time spent on the development of kinetic analysis assays. Also, data evaluation is improved with this new version.

One is a new, reliable, and efficient method for coupling capillary columns in gas chromatography, CE, and other coupled-column capillary separation techniques. An automated and standardized connection between two capillary columns is established in five steps with a deactivated Meltfit tube. A combination of heat and air pressure fixates the columns in the tube; this feature ensures a seamless connection. The Meltfit has been tested with up to 11 connections in series without leaking or showing any noticeable band broadening.

UV–vis. Jaz is a family of modular optical-sensing instruments that are easily adaptable for field, lab, or process environments. The stackable, modular, and autonomous components share common electronics and communications and can operate together or separately. The Jaz family includes a microprocessor and onboard display, which eliminate the need for a PC. Ethernet connectivity, a secure digital card for data storage, and a battery module allow for untethered measurements and data collection.

Column. A new 50 × 2.0 mm i.d. column has been added to the Onyx monolith line. It has a small diameter and requires less sample and solvent than other columns. The Onyx columns contain solid rods of fused silica and can operate at high flow rates with low backpressure. Thus, run times are reduced compared with conventional columns; this feature makes the columns well-suited for high-throughput applications. Biological samples that can clog other types of columns are easily separated. Phenomenex
