Winners, 2000 Pittcon College Grant Program
Helen M. Free Award
The Pittsburgh Conference and its sponsoring societies, the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SACP) and the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh (SSP), are pleased to announce the 2000 Pittsburgh Conference Memorial National College Grants Awardees.
The ACS announced the recipient of the 2000 Helen M. Free Award for Public Outreach. The honor consists of a crystal award and $1,000 and is given each year to someone who has made a major effort to communicate to the public how the chemical sciences improve the quality of life. •

Her prize is $1,500, a trip to the Fall 2000 ACS Meeting, and publication of her work in The Alchemist. I&EC Graduate Student Award The ACS Division of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry (I&EC) presented its Graduate Student Awards at a luncheon and ceremony during the Fall 2000 ACS Meeting in Washington, DC. The award is to a graduating student in chemistry or chemical engineering (or related discipline) who has accepted or is applying for a position in industry. •

The Pittsburgh Conference Memorial National College Grants program, established in memory of R. K. Scott, the president of the Pittsburgh Conference in 1955, serves as a memorial to deceased members of the Pittsburgh Conference committee by promoting excellence in science education. Through the program, small colleges can enhance their science curricula through grants to purchase equipment and course materials. In 1974, two grants of $1,000 each were given; in 2001 more than $100,000 has been set aside for these awards.
Award Deadlines 2001 Pittcon College Grant Program The Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy and its co-sponsoring technical societies, the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh (SSP) and the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SACP), announce the 2001 Pittsburgh Conference Memorial National College Grants Program. Grants will be awarded to small-college science departments for the purchase of scientific equipment, audiovisual or other teaching aids, and library materials for use in the teaching of science at the undergraduate level. On the basis of submitted proposals, at least 12 colleges will be selected to receive grants, each grant having a maximum of $9,000. Courses, Seminars, Meetings, Opportunities Mentor, U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad Program The American Chemical Society is accepting applications from high school teachers for a position as mentor for the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad program. Duties during the three-year term include helping to plan and conduct the national study camp for high school students held at the United States Air Force Academy in mid-June 2002, 2003, and 2004. Successful applicants are expected to have a broad background in both theoretical and descriptive chemistry and classroom experience, and should demonstrate involvement with students in special projects or activities. Applicants must make a three-year time commitment. All expenses and travel costs, as well as an honorarium, are paid by ACS.
