A Quiet Voice

Spirit, which binds God's people together over time and around the globe.

Dear friends, I hope you are in good health and spirits. Please know that you are in my daily prayers. About a year ago, a quiet voice in my heart awoke, that yearned to be understood. In my youth I learned to feed this voice. Indeed, it was the assistant rector when I was a ninth grader that, upon learning of such voice calling me to priesthood, taught me to let it grow. He also cautioned me not to force, rush or try to manipulate it, rather, to welcome and nurture the voice of God. While running last week with Grant, a member of Saint Dunstan's where I serve, he asked me, "How do you feed such a voice?" My response was simple and not very clear. I said, "By being intentional and trusting in the power of the Holy Spirit working to guide you." I learned that to fully feed the work of the Holy Spirit I needed more than the sacrament shared at Lord's Table and corporate worship of God. I needed to do more. I started by setting aside extra time for prayer and scripture. I sought deeper opportunities to serve Christ in others, and to get my hands dirty in ministry. I spent time with those who would pray with me and reflect back what they heard and saw. Lastly, I freshened up my self-care. I committed myself to running three days a week, spending more time cooking, coaching my kid's teams, making regular date nights with Kate and spending time with close friends. The net result has been abundant blessings. One such blessing led to my call as your next pastor, priest and companion in the journey with Jesus Christ. During these weeks of transition for all of us, please know that I will continue to pray for each you, literally by name each week. And I ask for your prayers for my family (Kate, Maya (10), Marcos (7) and me). Indeed, it is the power of prayer, through the gift of the Holy

The photo here is from the top of my prie dieux where I pray each day. It is of course the St Bart's 50th anniversary cross (a gift from Judy Macemon) and a prayer card, from my mother, which I now offer to you. If you would, please keep Saint Dunstan's (Dover, MA) in your prayers as well, as they now enter a season of transition. I look forward to joining you soon. Prayerfully, Mark+

Sing a New Song It is said that when we sing a song to the Lord, praising Him for all the blessings, love and mercy He brings to our lives, we are also singing a song of love to the one being praised. As we approach 2015 at St. Bart's, we need to sing that song of praise and love to our Lord for all He has given to His church, St. Bartholomew's, and to each of us. Our financial Giving Ministry Theme for 2015 is: "Sing a New Song" unto the Lord. Please join us in participating in this most important and fulfilling financial Giving Ministry , to continue to provide meaningful and joyful support our clergy and staff, music and youth programs, Sunday School for our little angels, campus beautification, and going forth reaching out to others in the name of Christ. Let us think of just a few new blessings and new beginnings for St. Bartholomew's to sing about going into 2015:       

Our new rector and family arriving at St. Bart's. New spiritual leadership. New Outreach Ministries. A new vision of Adult Education between services. New long term roofing for our Sanctuary and Parish Hall buildings. The new Solar Energy System for cost-effective electricity New low maintenance and drought-resistant landscaping in campus areas. A new awareness of the presence of the Holy Spirit giving us the energy and determination to serve God by making all things new and fresh.

As a reminder, we know that we are in this together, and we are all part of the spiritual energy of St. Bart's. We know that when we give of ourselves and of what we have, unselfishly and with love, we receive in return, a deepening of our faith, hope, and love in God, and a deepened sense and awareness of God's grace in our lives. Blessings and Love from your Giving Ministry Committee Please reserve October 18, at 6:00 pm (after the 5:00 service) to attend the 2015 Giving Ministry Kickoff event at St. Bart's. We will partake of good food, drink, and fellowship until 7:00 pm, and then the choirs, groups, and soloists of St. Bart's will raise a joyful noise unto the Lord and "Sing a New Song".

Calling Committee Corner Officially Closes "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens..." Ecclesiastes 3 With the calling of our new rector, Father Mark McKone-Sweet and 15 months of work together, the season for the Calling Committee has come to end. We disband and as faithful sheep, we fold back into the flock. Each of us emerges from this process a changed person. We have developed a deeper faith than even we thought possible during our journey. We know more about our church, our brothers and sisters in Christ, and ourselves. We have toiled, cried, laughed, prayed, hugged, and have even bared our souls to one another. Most importantly, together we have learned to recognize the Holy Spirit, honor it, trust it, and know that it is leading us at all times. And led us, it did! Our hard work could not have been possible without the support and patience of our families, and the care and prayers of our fellow parishioners. We are grateful to all of you for your unceasing prayers, encouraging words, and tolerance in times when we could not divulge our discernment work. We thank you for allowing us the privilege to serve as your representatives. We also thank the clergy and staff who have assisted us, nurtured us, and kept us on course. A special thank you goes out to Father Daniel Pearson for enlightening us with readings and Bible study; challenging us to think about the future of the Episcopal Church; and turning our focus to the work of the Holy Spirit. We value his leadership and his understanding of the calling process. Lastly, we thank our loving and abundant God. God is good all the time and all the time, God is good! He has blessed St. Bart's with a rich heritage and an even brighter future. He has set our feet on a new path. He walks in front to show us the way, beside us to take our hand, and behind us to nudge us forward. As we begin this new chapter in the life of St. Bart's, may we embrace the gift God has given us in our new rector and family, praise him for completing this call, and listen for when He calls our name to serve others. May our lips be prepared with, "Here I am, Lord!" Amen and Alleluia! Page 3

Music Ministry News You all would have been so very proud of those members of the Coventry choir who were able to go on the tour to France. They sang in some wonderfully beautiful places and represented our church family very well indeed. This small cathedral north of Paris was full of local parishioners and families even though it was raining heavily. We sang many of the pieces that you have come to love and appreciate here at St. Bart’s. So we truly brought our faith tradition and sang our hearts out for services and concerts in churches both great and small. Please ask those who went along to tell you some of the stories and experiences we all had. A memorable time, indeed! As we move into the fall, we can expect some placement changes with our many ensembles. For instance, the Salisbury Hand Bell Choir will playing at the 8:00 am service on the second Sunday of each month as well as the Schola Cantamus will continue singing on the 4th Sunday each month at the 8:00 am service The Coventry Choir will be singing Evensongs next year on Saturday evenings at 5:00 pm. They are scheduled for November 29, February 21 and May 30 at the 5:00 pm service with Eucharist. We are also going to be bringing a Taize style service to the Saturday service once a month with the Psalm Singers. The Choristers will continue singing at the first Sunday of each month at 10:15 am. I am very excited about the musical church year ahead: this is the year for Handel's Messiah on December 7 at 4:00 pm (part of our Concert Series) with full orchestra, choir and soloists. The Mid-Lent Mass is by Joseph Rheinberger strings, organ, choir and soloists on March 8 at the 10:15 am service. Mark your calendars and don't miss out.

Ministry A Fresh "Green" Face for our Campus Space is the theme adopted by the Green Thumb Ministry for the multiphase project to update and freshen our landscaping while moving towards drought tolerant and low maintenance plantings. Work has started on replacing the damaged sod at the Columbarium and repair of irrigation and planting new plants will be completed in the near future. Phase 1 of the "Green" Face will include the upper parking lot center circle, the areas surrounding the steps leading up to the church, and the lower parking lot dividers. The work will take place in September and be ready for the arrival of Father Mark on October 4. We need your help: 

 

Volunteers are needed to help move stones from areas to be prepared and pile them up for future use. Many hands would finish this job in 2-3 hours on September 6 at 9:00 am. We need a bobcat for a day in September. If you have access to one, please let me know. In September, we will have a table on the patio with information on how you can donate to support this ministry by sponsoring a tree (or two) or an entire area. In September, we may have a Propagation Workshop where you can learn how to propagate and grow succulents. We will then have a Green Thumb Day in late September or October to let you practice by planting some succulent groupings in planted areas at the church (under supervision). Details to follow.

If there is an outside space that you think we should beautify in phase 2, please let us know. [email protected].

Sing on! — Dr. William J. Eichorn, Minister of Music and the Arts

Plarn Mat Production Doubles ... We are now the proud owners of 2 plarn looms, one located in the youth room and one in the Sunday school, which are super easy to use and give far quicker results than crocheting. Three mats were started at the August workshop which we will continue to work on throughout the month and again at our next intergenerational gettogether on September 21 after the 10:15 am service. It was wonderful to have so many hands working on this great project last month and I look forward to increasing production over the coming months both at the monthly workshops and during Sunday school and youth group. Friends at Living Way Church in Poway, who helped teach us the art of plarn, distributed 17 mats to the Down Town homeless at the beginning of August which were very well received but many more are needed especially as we head into the cooler and damper winter months. Bring your children, grandchildren, moms, dads and grandparents, we have a task for everyone and with these new looms we'll have completed mats in no time. Looking forward to seeing you on September 21st. — Pippa Mills - [email protected]

Still Not Done – The Leaning Tower of Pisa As many of you know my wife Nina is Italian. In our many years of marriage I, too, have become Italian—probably by proxy and Italy is a place we love to visit. I particularly love visiting Pisa and the famous cathedral with its leaning tower.1 In the late half of the 12th century the Pisa city fathers lobbied for a free standing bell tower to be added to cathedral square. They envisioned that seven large bells would be showcased, one for each note of the musical scale. The vote was unanimous and the project to build the tower was approved. Initially a large base of thirteen foot thick walls was built to support the tower. But once second floor construction began─things started to shift. Just a little at first, but more as each floor was added. The problem was that the foundation was set in wet and unstable subsoil. Construction was halted for a century─yes a full century, to let the ground settle. Construction resumed in the late 13th century and in an effort to compensate for the tilt, engineers built the upper floors with one side taller than the other, causing the spine of the tower to curve. As time marched on the tilting continued. When it reached 5.5 degrees─engineers panicked. To stabilize the tower support cables were cinched around the third level and anchored several hundred meters away to the earth. Then, 800 tons of lead counterweights were added to the base in place of the soil. When completed, the team proudly announced the tower would be stable for 200 years. With all the adjustments the tower is 3 feet shorter on one side than the other and has a bend in the middle. So what has all this to do with Church and God. During the Reformation Martin Luther wrote: "A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing". It said that he had the tower in mind when he wrote it. Luther knew, as we do, that God's character never changes, His strength never diminishes, His word never fails, His love is unlimited. He always accomplishes what He sets out to do. He is the same yesterday as today and forever.

On this island home called earth, God has assembled His one true structure that will stand the test of time— His church. There is no doubt the church is in transition, but it will always be here. It is His building, the body of Christ. He is the architect, builder, owner and Lord. Does His church have a secure foundation? Yes, Jesus Christ himself is the chief cornerstone. It is bold and strong. The gates of hell will not prevail against it. The church today is a hard hat area. It is undergoing change and there are always enough people to criticize the church and God's creation. Regardless of the obstacles we face we have been chosen to lead the change today. Like the crew that saved the tower, the mantle is in our hands. Ministry is construction in its purist form and as with any building project, the blueprints—His word—is in our hands. All we have to do is follow them. 1

Praying for Our Confirmands and Mentors

Passages

The Rev. Dr. Judith Allison and the Rev. Bill Zettinger Since our youth minister Greg Tuttle is departing, our confirmands and mentors met on Sunday, August 24 with Greg , Rev. Bill and Rev. Judith to refresh plans for our continuing program. With Greg’s departure, Rev. Bill and Rev. Judith will coordinate the remaining program until the Bishop’s visitation for confirmation on January, 25, 2015. Our incoming rector, Rev. Mark will oversee the entire program. We look forward to working with our young people as they prepare for their “mature and public affirmation” as our Book of Common Prayer says, of their baptismal commitments and ask each of you to pray for: Caroline Munoz, Kate Jones, Sydney Strout, Megan Louise Oakes, Brenna Rose Fineman, John P. Darcy and each of their sponsors. We raise our confirmands to you, Blessed Lord, for your care. We rejoice in their faith journey and ask you to be their guide, guardian, and help. Let them feel the love of their church family as they begin a new chapter in their lives. Reveal to them your plan – your good, perfect, and pleasing will – for their lives. Surround them with your Holy Spirit, instilling in each the confidence only you can provide. For questions, please feel free to contact Rev. Judith at [email protected] or Rev. Bill at [email protected]

Our current issue of Forward Day by Day, available in the church narthex tract rack, offers helpful tips for your daily devotions. In addition to encouraging your setting time aside for Scripture reading, reflection and prayer, this issue suggests available supplements such as a reader's guide, and a daily devotional email message for families. Also, the beautiful icon of Christ (pictured above) on the cover was designed by the Rev. Paige Blair, rector of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Del Mar—it is a classic representation of Christ our Savior in the Orthodox tradition.
