Further details to follow. JULY - TUI MOTU. On Sale in the foyer Today, following the Mass. The Theme for this month’s issue of Tui Motu is ‘SHELTERING THE HOMELESS’ So very topical, with the current crises round housing in N.Z. Mary Betz, and Jo Ayers write about the meaning Of ‘home’ in the Biblical tradition and from first hand experience. Political Commentator ‘Colin James’ writes one of the ‘comment’ articles. Dunedin Night Shelter Directors explain their service. A Refugee talks of the difficult process of finding a home in N.Z. and we are challenged by Daniel O’Learyto see ourselves ‘at home in the universe!’ Some challenging and thought provoking material. Please keep in your prayers those of our parish and school community who are sick, lonely or going through hard times and need our help and comfort. Please pray for the happy repose of the souls of RECENTLY DECEASED: Iolande Muprhy– our thoughts and prayers are with Jim and family.

17 July 2016 16th Sunday in Ordinary time Readings THIS WEEK: 1st: Gen.18.1-10a 2nd: Col. 1.24-28 Gospel: Lk.10.38-42

Hospitality The mystery of Christ Martha and Mary

Readings for next week: ; Gen.18.20-32 Gol.2.12.-14 Lk.11.1-13

*Next weeks readings SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR Genesis 18:20-32; Colossians2:12-14; Luke 11:1-13 Next Sunday’s gospel provides plenty to reflect on when it comes to prayer. First of all we have the apostles asking Jesus to teach them how to pray. Personal or devotional prayer as we know it was not generally part of the ancient Jewish faith. Jesus responds, as any devout Jew would have, in words reflecting the Jewish Kaddish prayer or hymn of praise: “May the great name of God be exalted and sanctified throughout the world…. May God’s kingship be established in your lifetime and in your days....” “Keep giving us each day the bread we need.” The final petitions in the prayer are for forgiveness “as we forgive each one who is in debt to us” and freedom from trials that test our faith. Then comes the unusual little parable about the sleeping neighbour’s response to the friend in need. Is it persistence that, finally, brings a response or is it the need to avoid shame in a culture where a Jew would be greatly shamed by refusing to help a neighbour who is unable to meet the demands of hospitality? The literal meaning of anaideia, the original Greek word in Luke, is ‘avoidance of shame’. The English translation ‘persistence’ seems to be connected with what Luke’s Jesus says next: ‘Ask……..search…….knock……..’ And then there is the final message that God’s care for us is so utterly extravagant that we can turn to God with complete confidence – with the same confidence that gave Abraham, in the first reading, the nerve to haggle with God over the survival of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham was not asking for personal favours but for the life of the people of these two cities where his nephew Lot and his family lived. In the end, it was only this family that survived; but God heard and responded to Abraham's plea. The key ingredients of that plea were faith and persistence. JB Kendall rsj Are we two wordy in prayer? My own reflection is that perhaps we are. We recite but are we thinking what we are saying / praying . Reciting is important, but so is reflection on what we pray an example from last week. All the earth, not just us in kiwi land but all of us are all called to shout to the Lord joyfully. Fr Brian. Shout joyfully to God, all the earth, look at each word Shout why when what does this mean for you. Joyfully : When, at eucharist, at nature, at new birth, new experience. God : who is God for you, just a name, someone close, obscure, delightful creator.

Week ending July 17: the readings this Sunday leave us not with a choice between one or another way of following the Lord, but the challenge to welcome, to feed, to pray and listen to the call of the Lord in the stranger, the one in need. Christ is at the door: listen, welcome, and serve.

The other microphone requires some practice , each person might need to stand at a different place, no microphone is universal. As readers, please be aware of the right place for you. Please remember it is God's Word you are pronouncing. Gods word is special, holy and reverent. The most important Word you will read today, and the most important word people will hear. So practice is required, early arrival is essential, and procession in with the Eucharistic minister, Priests and Altar Servers is the norm. Fr Brian
