December 2018

Dear Members, I love this time of year. Our sales team travel has come to an end, and Billy and David have wrapped up their harvest duties. Our winemaking team has now turned its attention to the quieter activity in the barrel room--nurturing our newly barreled wines from our 2018 vintage and preparing for our first bottling of the year in early March. And finally, our focus turns to celebrating the holidays with our family and friends. To sum up the 2018 harvest, we would describe it as long and steady. From the beginning of harvest on Labor Day through the end of October, our weather was unusually mild and uneventful—a winemaker’s dream! Because of this, Billy thinks that it may be one for the record books as possibly our best vintage EVER! And a quick note about this shipment of 2015 wines: This was a very “short” vintage—meaning very low yields but excellent quality. In particular, we had just enough 2015 Riverbench Vineyard Pinot and the Range 30 West for this shipment, and there will be only a few bottles remaining for reorder. Please let us know immediately if you are interested in purchasing more of either wine. To help get us all in the holiday spirit, our popular Twelve Days of Christmas begins December 1. Watch your email for different wine specials each day over the course of twelve days. And, for your business and personal gift-giving this holiday season, we are offering special gift packs again. You can check them out on our website at www.foxenvineyard.com in our online store. Go to our website or call the winery at 805-937-4251. Shipping deadlines are noted in this newsletter. As I write this letter, devastating fires rage throughout California. Please know that our hearts go out to everyone who has been affected by these fires, including our brave firefighters and other first-responders. If you are wondering how you can help, we’d like to encourage you make a donation to DIRECT RELIEF, who are currently busy distributing smoke masks, medicine and other resources to healthcare communities across California. Go to www.directrelief.org for more information and to make a donation specifically to their California wildfire fund.

Winemaker Notes by Bill Wathen 2015 Pinot Noir, La Encantada Vineyard: La Encantada

Vineyard sits on a throne in the magical kingdom of the west Sta. Rita Hills--home of the coolest and best terroir in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. We source from four unique sites there--each with a different clone and orientation. These grapes are always the last Pinot Noirs to be harvested. In the winery, our La Encantada Pinot is always the shyest and most subtle of our Pinot Noirs in its initial stages. But it doesn’t take much coaxing, just patience. We have learned that the Pinot Noir from this vineyard always comes around and expresses lovely red and black fruit (cherry and pomegranate), with plenty of perfume and silky finesse for which La Encantada has become known. It was bottled without fining or filtration and is balanced and subtle enough for a frittata, omelet or even a salmon Caesar salad. This will also be a hit with your turkey sandwich the day after Thanksgiving. Include cranberry sauce and Brie. Drink now through 2023. 2015 Pinot Noir, Riverbench Vineyard: This Santa Maria Valley vineyard was originally planted to

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir during the 1970s. Few of these early plantings still exist or are economically productive, so a second wave of plantings were installed in 2007 and 2008. We were invited to choose our acreage and Pinot Noir clones from the Riverbench Vineyard in 2008. This Pinot Noir is a selection of our best barrel lots from their Block 38 (Dijon Clone 667 & Swan). The Riverbench terroir differs significantly from the high mesa terroir of the Tepusquet bench situated across the Sisquoc River. Alluvial (water born) sand and river rock as opposed to gravityborn heavier soils, let the Pinots show more earthy and soft fruit elements. This wine displays abundant notes of beet root, strawberry, rhubarb and berry pie crust with bright acidity and medium soft tannins. It was bottled without fining or filtration. It’s very approachable now and willing to match up with almost any poultry, fish or salad. Drink now through 2023. Production: 300 cases • Retail: $52 (Note: As a wine club exclusive, we do not submit this for wine critic review.)

2015 Range 30 West, Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara: The Range is always one of our favorite

7200 blends, and the Range keeps getting better! This blend ages unbelievingly well for 5-10+ years. 2015 was the third year of drought resulting in extremely low yields but superb quality. For the second year in a row, the extended drought accelerated harvest time, and we ended up picking both the McGinley Cabernet Franc and the Vogelzang Merlot in early September, versus mid to late October in a normal year. The wines were blended according to our trials after 14 months in barrel and spent the last eight months married in those barrels. This wine was aged in 100% French Bordeaux barrels (2/3 new) and was bottled without fining or filtration. This wine is a very pretty example of how good Happy Canyon blends can be. (Not that I don’t like my Los Potreros or Vogelzang Cabernets). It displays firm tannins and glorious, solid fruit structure--yet is giving at the same time. Take a bottle to the Hitching Post next time you are in our Valley and enjoy it with one of Frank’s steaks. Let us know how the match was. Drink now through 2027.
