CHAIR’S MESSAGE

Spring has sprung at the Chamber As the Chamber continues working to grow and strengthen each year, it is our goal to provide our members with the most valuable opportunities possible to get involved, network and grow their business. In order to do this, we adhere to short-term and long-term goals drafted and approved by our board of directors. These goals require us to elevate current efforts to better serve our members and the greater community. To serve the evolving needs of our business community, Chamber events are evaluated regularly based on value to the membership, connection to the Chamber’s mission and financial impact on our organization. As a result of this evaluation, the Sip & Savor dinner event was created to replace the annual Dinner Dance. Since it began in 2014, Sip & Savor has been a huge hit with our members – it’s one of my favorite Chamber events. The evening provides an elegant networking opportunity along with highlighting member chefs and wineries for their delectable creations during a four-course meal. This year, Sip & Savor will feature a masquerade theme and has moved to spring to better accommodate the schedules of our members. The event on Saturday, April 22 is sure to entertain with live and silent auctions, live music, raffles, networking and more. Reserve your seat by April 5 to support area businesses at this formal affair! Each spring, the Chamber also recognizes outstanding individuals, businesses and organizations in our community that go above and beyond to serve their clients and make Chambersburg a great place to work and live. These awards, presented at the Annual Awards Breakfast on Thursday, April 6, are earned by members that deliver exceptional quality of service to their customers, are industry leaders or offer a unique approach to delivery of its goods or services and have a significant impact on the Chambersburg community. I look forward to this breakfast every year because I learn a great deal about what people are accomplishing in our community that I may not have otherwise known about. It’s uplifting to hear about all the innovation and initiative taking place right here in Chambersburg. I’m excited for these upcoming spring events and hope to see you there!

Masquerade Mask Workshops Need the perfect masquerade mask for Sip & Savor? Guests are welcome to create their own mask at one of two workshops hosted by J. Bryant Photography & Designs, 76 S. Main Street. Workshops will be Thursday, April 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Early Childhood Expo on Apr. 22 The United Way of Franklin County, in partnership with the Community Education Coalition, is hosting an Early Childhood Expo on Saturday, April 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chambersburg Recreation Center, 235 S. Third St. The free expo will provide information for families about early childhood development, educational providers, community services and resources as well as fun and educational activities for children. Volvo Construction Equipment is the presenting sponsor. Early child care and preschool providers are invited to reserve exhibit space at the expo. There will also be free provider training and introductory sessions from Southwest Regional Key - Keystone STARS throughout the day. LFC Community talk health, history Health and history were the topics for Leadership Franklin County (LFC) Community in March. The day began at the Waynesboro Hospital with presentations from Barbara Rossini, James Pryor, Ann Spottswood, Dr. Tom Anderson and Dr. Frank Mozdy of Summit Health on topics including the Community Health Needs Assessment, Summit’s role in the community and the opioid epidemic. In addition, they spoke about the importance of other health care providers and community partners such as Keystone Health, and the importance of health care to economic development. Mandy Bakner of Summit Health also provided the class with a tour of the new Medical Office Building in Waynesboro. After lunch the class moved to Renfrew Museum & Park to learn about Franklin County’s history with Janet Pollard of the Franklin County Visitors Bureau. Before the session students were assigned a historical figure to research and prepare a presentation for the class. Frontier settlement, colonial rebellion and the Revolutionary War, sectional division and the Civil War and the Progressive Era were covered. The day ended with a discussion on how these past leaders impact today’s world and lessons that can be learned from them. LFC Community is sponsored by CenturyLink Business.

Youth witness leadership in action After nearly a year of learning about leadership, the Leadership Franklin County (LFC) Youth class witnessed leadership in action at the Franklin County Jail. The day began with Dr. Kim Eaton of Franklin County Government providing background on the jail, statistics on incarceration and the cost of the crimes, courts and corrections courts system. Maria Banks of the Chambersburg Area School District asked the students about what their expectations for the day were. After the background, students were introduced to Deputy Warden James Sullen and Captain Douglas Burget who spoke about the Franklin County Jail and led students on a tour of the facility including intake and the exercise yard. The class then met with a panel of inmates to learn about the circumstances that brought the inmates to this point in their lives and how they are working to improve their lives for the future.

LFC mixer on Apr. 12 Interested in building your leadership skills while learning more about the community? Join current students and alumni for an information mixer to discover how the Leadership Franklin County (LFC) Community program can help you achieve your goals. The mixer will be held Wednesday, April 12 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Chambersburg Heritage Center & Gift Shop, 100 Lincoln Way E. The mixer is free and includes refreshments and light appetizers. Since 1986, LFC has graduated more than 600 area residents from its Community program, developed to produce well-informed, motivated leaders who are willing and capable of working together for the betterment of Franklin County. The program is a tuition-based nine-month program. The class make-up is a mix of emerging and seasoned professionals with diverse backgrounds. Recruitment begins in the spring. A limited number of scholarships are available.

Contest helps high school students develop entrepreneurial skills The inaugural Franklin County High School Business Challenge will hold its final event on Wednesday, April 19. Eight teams from Chambersburg Area Senior High School, Greencastle-Antrim High School, James Buchanan High School and the Franklin County Career and Technology Center submitted written business plans in March. The contest is presented by Chambersburg Area Development Corp. with associate sponsors Southern Installations Inc. and M&T Bank. Four finalists will compete for scholarship money at the finale on April 19, presenting their projects to a panel and be asked questions similar to the TV show Shark Tank. Panelists Mike Ross of the Franklin County Area Development Corp., Cheryl Young of the Small Business Development Corp., and Dr. Stephen Holoviak will then choose the winning team. Each team has been mentored by local business leaders including Tiffany Bloyer of Franklin County Government, Rod Hocker of Johnnie’s Restaurant & Hotel Service, Duane Bock of First Community Bank of Mercersburg, Duaine Collier of Shippensburg Pump Company, Linda Boeckman of Wilson College, Jack Scott of LSI Controls and Jen Barnhart of Kegerreis Outdoor Advertising.

Following the tour and panel, students discussed what they witnessed and compared that to their initial perceptions. After a lunch from Kathy’s Deli, Deputy Warden Sullen and Captain Burget spoke about how they use leadership to manage the jail population and work to build better lives for the inmates upon their release. LFC Youth students are able to participate in the program for free thanks to program sponsor, Wilson College.

Reflections on Noel Purdy’s service to our community Since 2008, Noel Purdy has served in numerous roles as part of the Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce; most recently as the president of the Chamber and Downtown Chambersburg, Inc. (DCI). Through her dedication, leadership and diligence our community has prospered, and we’d like to thank her for that service. Noel began her career with us as executive director of the Greater Chambersburg Chamber Foundation, our affiliate focused on workforce development, education and citizenship in Franklin County. Her contributions included coordinating the Leadership Franklin County (LFC) community program as well as spearheading a similar program for high school students. Noel also created the LFC Alumni of the Year Award, coordinated countywide career fairs for students, worked with teachers to improve their knowledge of student career opportunities and much more. “Under Noel’s direction, the Leadership program tripled in sized,” said Robin Harmon, executive director of the Foundation. “She had a long-term vision of generating a network of community leaders of all ages that continues to positively impact our area.” In 2011, Noel assumed the role of president of DCI and executive director of the Community Development Corp. of Franklin County. In these roles, she worked with more than 150 volunteers to improve downtown, which included leading the Downtown Master Plan visioning process to attract lasting investment, creating new downtown events, leading public art initiatives and serving as a community resource for investors and business owners. Noel’s leadership helped create a network of dedicated volunteers and staff driven by her passion to see downtown prosper. Some of Noel’s most notable contributions included coordinating events like Oktoberfest, Small Business Saturday, Second Saturdays, etc. She also saw the potential for a vibrant arts community and drove the creation of the Downtown Mural Project, The Foundry artist cooperative and two large-scale mosaic murals. “The community’s involvement and investment in the downtown has increased dramatically under Noel’s direction,” said Sam Thrush, a board member of DCI and active volunteer. “She has a distinct ability to see a need in our community and find the stakeholders and volunteers needed to make it happen. Her vision and passion has started the ball rolling for others to see the great potential downtown

has, and we can see those results in The Foundry, public art and new businesses.” Besides her focus on downtown, Noel has also served our community as president of the Chamber since August 2015. During that time, Noel worked with business and civic leaders to make Chambersburg a great place to live and work. Her ability to connect and network as well as lead a staff of 10 employees enabled the Chamber to thrive. “Noel excelled at juggling multiple arenas and driving progress ranging from property development and commerce to chamber membership and downtown initiatives,” said Kim Crider, board member of the Chamber. “She has been an amazing role model for women in our community, and we are sorry she chose to resign; we’ll definitely miss her leadership.” Noel’s service to our community has not gone unnoticed and has played a pivotal role in the progress of the Greater Chambersburg Chamber Foundation, Downtown Chambersburg, Inc. and the Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce. Thank you for your leadership and all you’ve accomplished for our community.

Concerts in the Park Second Saturday Concerts in the Park are back this summer at Chambers Fort Park. The free event features live music each second Saturday from June through September from 5 to 8 p.m. Bring your chairs and blankets and enjoy listening to local musicians perform their own music as well as cover popular hits. Downtown Summer Movie Series This free series features family-friendly movies screened outdoors at Chambers Fort Park on Second Saturdays from June through September. Bring the family and grab your chairs, blankets and picnics. DCI is currently seeking concert and movie sponsors for Second Saturdays. CrabFeast

Everyone’s favorite all-you-can-eat crab festival returns on August 26 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the AMVETS Picnic Pavillion. The 21st Annual CrabFeast will feature small games of chance and a live auction in addition to, of course, the delicious food! Attendees will enjoy barbeque chicken with all the fixin’s and fresh hard shell crabs. Proceeds are used for downtown revitalization efforts. Spring into History on Apr. 29 On April 29, Franklin County springs into history with its fifth annual history ramble - aptly named Spring into History! Spring into History has over twenty sites organized in a circular route for visitors to begin their tour at any point. All sites have no admission fee for the day. Traverse centuries of American heritage and culture in Franklin County. Explore the history frontier and colonial America, secret passages of the Underground Railroad, raids and invasions of the Civil War and centuries of American military history, and so much more! Take the leap, take a fresh look at Franklin County, and spring into America’s history. Regional multi-chamber mixer for Cinco de Mayo on May 4 Don’t miss one of the largest Chamber mixers of the year at the Cinco de Mayo Regional Fiesta Mixer on Thursday, May 4. The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Conference Center at Shippensburg University, 500 Newburg Road. More than 500 business people are expected to attend from throughout the region. Pie Five Pizza Co. The Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry led a multi-industry coalition of advocacy groups in sending a memo last week to the state Senate urging support for a bill that aims to bring consistency between state and federal overtime law. Last year, the U.S. Department of Labor announced plans to increase by more than 100 percent the wage level at which the so-called “white collar exemption” is triggered. This proposal prompted the state Senate Appropriations and Labor and Industry Committees to hold a hearing at which multiple employers and non-profit representatives testified to the challenges they experience with overtime rules, including an unintended quirk unique to Pennsylvania law that adds additional burdens. Federal overtime law currently includes guidelines that help employers and employees in certain circumstances mitigate some of these unintended negative impacts of overtime rules. Unfortunately, Pennsylvania law is silent on many of these rules, which has inadvertently forced employers to forgo utilizing federal guidelines because a workplace policy may be found to have violated state law even though it is compliant under federal statute. The bill, which Sen. Lisa Baker, R-Luzerne, plans to introduce, simply provides that employers may rely on the federal guidelines unless state law explicitly prohibits a particular rule. “The outcome of last year’s USDOL proposal remains uncertain as it makes its way through the courts,” the memo stated. “In the meantime, Senator Baker’s bill will help those nonprofits, human service agencies, educational institutions, other employers in your district and their employees comply with overtime laws. Totem Pole Playhouse located in Caledonia State Park has announced a new initiative aimed at helping area nonprofit organizations raise funds. The new program offers any 501(c)3 not-for-profit group or organization, regardless of size, the opportunity to sell tickets for a selected performance of one of the Playhouse’s shows this season at face value and then keep half of the price of all the tickets they sell. The program was created in an effort to generate fundraising opportunities for smaller nonprofit organizations with limited budgets. Wilson College’s nursing program has received accreditation from the National League for Nursing’s Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation, an indication of excellence and adherence to nationally established standards for nursing education. The initial sixyear accreditation applies to all four of Wilson’s nursing pathways: the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs for existing registered nurses, the Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and the Master of Science in nursing. The college’s nursing programs were approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing in 2015. Wilson pursued accreditation, which is voluntary, to ensure the quality and integrity of its programs and because of the advantages to nursing graduates. A total of 126 students are enrolled in Wilson’s four nursing pathways. In addition to taking classes both in-person and online, pre-licensure students benefit from hands-on opportunities with the college’s local clinical partners. GIVING BACK The Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation recently awarded a $540,000 grant to fund scholarships for Wilson College students with financial need through the Stabler Scholarship Endowment. The endowment has provided scholarships for 182 Wilson students since the program began in 2008. Students are selected for scholarships based on financial need, academic achievement and service to the community. Although the number changes throughout the year, a total of 71 students at Wilson are currently being helped with Stabler scholarships in the 2016-17 academic year. Since 1985, The Stabler Foundation has provided Wilson with nearly $4.33 million in funding for a number of programs, including the Stabler Scholarship Endowment; Curran Scholars program, which promotes student volunteerism; and daycare support for students in Wilson’s Single Parent Scholars program. Located in Harrisburg, The Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation was established by the Stablers in 1966 exclusively for charitable, religious, scientific, literary or educational purposes.
