Business and community leaders honored The Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce honored businesses and community members for their leadership, community engagement and achievements at the sold out Annual Awards Breakfast on April 6, sponsored by M&T Bank. Nine awards were presented during the morning event.

Joanne Cochran was honored as this year’s international ATHENA Leadership Award recipient, which honors professional, community and personal leadership and those who actively assist women in reaching their full leadership potential and/or personal and professional advancement. The ATHENA Award is sponsored locally by F&M Trust and Jennings Chevrolet, Buick, GMC. Cochran founded Keystone Health in 1986 after recognizing that the area’s migrant workers needed healthcare. Thirty-one years later, Keystone Health serves more than 50,000 patients annually and employs over 400 people. Through Cochran’s tireless commitment and dedication, Keystone has grown to be the nonprofit community pillar it is today, becoming the largest multi-specialty Federally Qualified Healthcare Center in the nation. She has continually spearheaded efforts to add services to meet the community’s needs, and works closely with many organizations to help provide more services through a variety of outlets. As an innovative leader demonstrating compassion, creativity and fearlessness, Cochran helps women grow and develop to their full potential through leading by example. New awards presented at the ceremony for the first time this year were the Young Professional of the Year and the Spirit of the Community Award. Details on these winners and the other award recipients are on page three. Story continued on page 3.

GREATER CHAMBERSBURG CHAMBER FOUNDATION

The impact of education, arts Leadership Franklin County (LFC) Community explored education and the arts in April. The session began with a welcome and talk at the Franklin County Career and Technology Center (FCCTC) from Jim Duffey, administrative director. Dr. Eric Michael of Wilson College led the class in a discussion of the current state of education in Franklin County, followed by a mock school board exercise for a small taste of the issues public schools deal with. Dr. Mark Long, principal at the Chambersburg Career Magnet School, then treated the class to a tour of the school. After the tour, Amy Hicks, executive director of the United Way of Franklin County, spoke about efforts in the county to support early childhood education. The class also enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by the FCCTC culinary department, then spoke to a panel of representatives from alternatives to public education: Angie Petersheim, administrator of Shalom Christian Academy; Michelle D’Antonio, head of school of Montessori Academy of Chambersburg; and Kimberly Travis, homeschool parent. During the afternoon session, the class heard about the importance of arts to our community. Rowan Joseph of Totem Pole Playhouse, Anne Finucane of the Chambersburg Council for the Arts, Sally Herritt of Chambersburg Community Theatre, Jon Meyer of The Capitol Theatre and Heather McEndree of Cumberland Valley School of Music (CVSM) described the impact arts have on the community, education, economic development and more. After a tour of the theatre, students participated in an arts experience then enjoyed performances from students at CVSM. The day ended with a prospecting reception for possible incoming students at the Chambersburg Heritage Center & Gift Shop. Applications are now available for the LFC Community class of 2018 at www.franklincountyworks.com/leadership and are due by June 30. LFC Community is sponsored by CenturyLink Business.

Youth prepare for LFC graduation The final session of the Leadership Franklin County (LFC) Youth Class of 2017 in April was a bittersweet day. Jason Crider of Orrstown Bank gave the class tips about public speaking in preparation for their project presentations at LFC graduation. Students gave an impromptu one minute speech on a random subject. Then each project team practiced their graduation presentation, explaining their community service project and the process. The student projects include: Valentines made by Greencastle-Antrim students for Menno Haven residents, a volleyball tournament to benefit Cumberland Valley Christian School athletics, a clothes collection for the Salvation Army, a collection for the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, books for the Ronald McDonald House and St. Jude’s, creation of an encouraging poster for Reese Burdette, a 5k to benefit the Better Days Animal Shelter, and a senior acceptance day celebration for Waynesboro students. The LFC Youth graduation ceremony will be held Sunday, May 7 at Wilson College. Leadership Franklin County Youth is offered free to area sophomore students thanks to program sponsor Wilson College.

Applications for LFC Community Class of 2018 now available Interested in building your leadership skills while learning more about the community? Apply for the Leadership Franklin County (LFC) Community program. The application deadline is June 30 and tuition is $1,300. A limited number of scholarships are available. LFC strives to improve the quality and effectiveness of leadership in Franklin County by bringing together emerging leaders who represent a cross-section of the community. The program creates an awareness of the problems, opportunities and resources available in the area while stimulating a commitment from students to work together to make Franklin County a better place in which to live and work. Applications are available at franklincountyworks.com/leadership. Spring cleaning for downtown

DOWNTOWN HAPPENINGS

Let’s paint the (down)town! Downtown Chambersburg Inc. (DCI) is coordinating the 5th Annual Downtown Mural Project that will add color and creativity to the public spaces in the heart of Chambersburg. Area artists are invited to create an individual mural that will be displayed at various outdoor locations in the downtown area.

Prepared canvases (1/4” primed plywood) will be available free of charge at the Chamber office, 100 Lincoln Way East, and The Foundry, 100 S. Main St., beginning in early June and will be 2-by-4feet in size. The deadline for submissions is August 1. The installation will be unveiled at a First Friday Event on September 1. The murals will be judged and awards will be announced on October 21 on the Downtown Chambersburg Facebook page. Community members of all ages are encouraged to participate. Guidelines for work: • Must be the artist’s individual work in design and execution. • Work must be able to withstand outdoor display for about five months; two coats of marine grade primer are highly recommended. • Work must be suitable for all ages. • Committee has the right to determine the suitability of work. • All mediums and themes are welcome. Submissions will be photographed and posted on the Downtown Chambersburg Facebook page. For entry forms and more information, visit www.DowntownCburg.com or call 717-264-7101.

Downtown Chambersburg is getting ready for spring! The Memorial Fountain will be filled with water and turned on, flower baskets have been ordered, a care management plan for the trees that line Main Street and Chambers Fort Park has been approved and the landscapers will soon begin working on the green spaces. The community is getting involved in sprucing up downtown, too. For May of Caring, a month of volunteer opportunities coordinated by United Way of Franklin County, a downtown spring clean-up day is scheduled for Saturday, May 13 in coordination with the borough. Volunteer groups will spend the morning cleaning up various places around downtown, such as the rail trail, along the Conococheague Creek and more. If you’re interested in forming a volunteer group, contact the United Way at 717-262-0015 or office@uwfcpa. org. In addition to clean and green projects, DCI continues to administer the Facade Improvement Program and is planning for the 5th Annual Downtown Mural Project, a public art project that displays 2’x4’ paintings on various downtown properties. Last year, more than 60 paintings were submitted and have been on display throughout the fall and winter on downtown buildings. Every year, DCI coordinates several projects that work together to create an inviting atmosphere and enhance the physical character and sense of place in the downtown. For more information, visit www.DowntownCburg.com or email [email protected].

Protection4Paws

Franklin County population growth among fastest in state

717-331-01231 │ www.protection4paws.com

My family created Protection4Paws first as a campaign name and then realized that we wanted to do more for our K9 officers. Therefore, Protection4Paws, Inc. was formed to carry on that passion and to continue to provide needed items to police K9s both active and retired on a wider scale. We focus on the tri-state area but will help any K9 should the need arise. We are a nonprofit organization run by volunteers who share the same passion. Many of the police K9 units are self-funded, so we strive to provide any support we can to our furry officers and their handlers.

In March 2017, the Penn State Data Center reported that Franklin County’s population was estimated to be 153,851. The new estimate represents an increase of 4,233 people since the 2010 Census. The population growth ranks Franklin County as the 6th fastest growing county in the entire state. Neighboring Cumberland County had the fastest growing population with more than 13,000 people since 2010.

In 2016-2017, Protection4Paws raised enough money through small fundraisers and sponsors to donate bullet and stab protective vests to 17 K9s in Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia at a cost of $1,050 each. Our goal is to continue to sponsor these needed items as well as provide first aid/trauma kits and medical expensed when needed. For more information, please call 717-331-0231 or visit www.protection4paws.com.

Wilson College 1015 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201 www.wilson.edu │ [email protected] │ 717-263-3150

Founded in 1869, Wilson College is a private, coeducational liberal arts college offering bachelor’s degrees in 34 majors and master’s degrees in education, educational technology, special education, the humanities, accountancy, management, nursing, fine arts and healthcare management. Wilson is committed to providing an affordable education that offers value to its students beyond graduation. Located in Chambersburg, Wilson College has a beautiful 300-acre campus with the Conococheague Creek running through its center. The main campus buildings are part of a historic district as designated by the National Register of Historic Places. Six buildings serve as student housing and with additional facilities for recreation, athletics and equestrian competitions, including three athletic fields (field hockey, soccer and softball), a field house and a fitness center. In addition, Wilson College has the USDA organiccertified Fulton Farm, part of the Fulton Center for Sustainability Studies, which allows a wide range of opportunities to learn about approaches to sustainable living. In January 2009, the college opened the $25 million Harry R. Brooks Complex for Science, Mathematics and Technology, the first Gold LEED-certified building in the area, and 2015 marked the completion of a $12 million renovation and expansion of the historic John Stewart Memorial Library, which reopened with a new state-of-the-art learning commons. Wilson College had the largest enrollment of its history in the fall 2016 with 1,098, which included students from 18 states and 16 countries. Visit www.wilson.edu for more information.

The map above illustrates that--with the exception of Centre, Butler and Union Counties--the counties that fall to the southeast of Interstates 81 and 78 are driving the state’s economy and population growth. More information from the Penn State Data Center can be found at www.pasdc.hbg.psu.edu.

Development continues at Exit 24 Chambersburg Area Development Corporation (CADC) is continuing with the construction of a new 100,000-square-foot industrial building adjacent to Interstate 81, Exit 24 in Shippensburg. Located within the United Business Park, the facility will serve as a new location for TST Impreso which is currently located on Wayne Avenue in Chambersburg. Based in Texas, TST is a manufacturer and distributor of a wide array of business forms, imaging products, and related paper products. The company operates five manufacturing plants and 16 warehouses across the country. Once completed, TST will relocate its 61 current full time and 13 temporary employees from Wayne Avenue to the new facility. New Jersey-based Matrix Development Group is also working on construction at United Business Park. In June, Matrix purchased 205 acres in the park with the intent of constructing up to 2.7 million square feet of warehouse facilities. The 1.5 million-square-foot warehouse/logistics building currently under construction is expected to be completed later this year. In addition to the Shippensburg locations, Matrix also owns the World Kitchen, LLC facility in Greencastle. In 2014 Matrix completed a $20 Million renovation to the World Kitchen property.

PA CHAMBER UPDATE

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

Addressing the job skills gap: PA Foundation partners with Mike Rowe As part of its ongoing initiative to address the Commonwealth’s job skills gap, the PA Chamber Educational Foundation is teaming up with Executive Producer and TV Host Mike Rowe to offer scholarships to Pennsylvanians interested in pursuing a career in skilled trades as part of the mikeroweWORKS Foundation’s 2017 Work Ethic Scholarship Program. “Pennsylvania has long been touted for its strong work ethic,” said PA Chamber President and CEO Gene Barr. “However, a lack of job readiness among candidates in critical growing industries has led to a growing skills gap. We’re proud to join with Mike Rowe and the mikeroweWORKS Foundation to increase public awareness about the growing demand for workers in the skilled trades.” The mikeroweWORKS Foundation’s Work Ethic Scholarship Program gives scholarships to people getting trained for skilled jobs that are in high demand. The PA Chamber’s contribution to the 2017 Work Ethic Scholarship Program will go directly towards qualified Pennsylvanians. With the help of the Commonwealth’s business community, the PA Chamber will contribute more than $75,000 in scholarship funds. The 2017 Work Ethic Scholarship Program launched in March. This innovative collaboration developed as a follow-up to the PA Chamber’s 2016 Workforce Summit, in which Rowe was the keynote speaker. At the Summit, the results of the PA Chamber’s 2016 Workforce Survey were unveiled to show that more than 50 percent of employers surveyed believe that recruiting qualified candidates is very or extremely difficult. Additionally, 57 percent said they think it will get more difficult within the next five years, and 56 percent said they are having difficulty filling technical/skilled trade jobs. Those interested in applying for the 2017 Work Ethic Scholarship can find more information at profoundlydisconnected.com. This article was written by the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry. For more information, visit www.pachamber.org.
