Dear Members,

June 2015

Well, summer is almost here and most of you already know that we didn’t get the storms we had hoped for during our “rainy season.” However, what we lack in rain here in Santa Barbara County, we make up for with our beautiful weather. Our hills may already be dry and golden, but our skies are usually clear and blue, and our temperatures are very pleasant. Since we farmers are perpetual optimists, we were hoping for some cleansing rain from a couple of late season storms in May; but alas, most of the moisture went north or south of us. So...here is my new drought motto: Save water...drink wine! Seriously, although our normal rainy season has past, we are busy doing our best to care for our dry-farmed estate vineyard. And so far, our Tinaquaic Vineyard looks healthy--albeit with very little crop. Our special Pinot Noir tasting flight, which began in February, were a big hit with our customers. So due to their popularity, we will continue more tasting room-exclusive events throughout the summer. In fact, we kicked off this summer with a special vertical Chardonnay tasting, inspired by the Chardonnay Symposium that was held in nearby Shell Beach last weekend. And, there will be more summer fun as John is working to line up musical entertainment on Friday afternoons throughout the summer...and there may be a food truck or two in our future. Look for more information to follow. Don’t forget that every third Saturday you can have a picnic lunch from one of our favorite eateries, Bell Street Farm, in nearby Los Alamos. You can order lunch by Thursday that can be delivered for you at FOXEN on Saturday. Go to [email protected] or call 805-344-4609 for menus and more information. We are constantly adding new tastings and dinners to our calendar. So as always, I encourage you to check out our calendar page on our website www.foxenvineyard.com/events for newly added events. We look forward to seeing many of you this year -- at the winery and on the road. Jenny and I are excited to depart for our third wine cruise with Martinelli Winery later this month with a record number of FOXEN club members. So to the many who will be joining us on the cruise (and to all of our FOXEN family), I say...Anchors Aweigh! Ahoy! Richard Doré

Billy’s Winemaker Notes

2012 Pinot Noir, Solomon Hills Vyd: Solomon Hills

is the new buzzword for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Santa Maria Valley. It is the westernmost vineyard in the AVA, hence the coolest. Our acreage sits on ancient dune soil (Marina Sand) and the vines are exposed to fog and wind on a daily basis during the growing season. FOXEN’s 3 acre site is a gentle 25 degree south slope, and is composed of 3 clones of 1 acre each: Dijon 115, Dijon 667 and Pommard. Because of the cooler site, these Pinot Noir grapes are generally harvested after Bien Nacido and Julia’s. As 2012 was our first vintage at Solomon Hills, I had no organoleptic history of the Pinot Noir there. After 3 consecutive vintages, I’m starting to grasp what Solomon Hills Pinot Noir is all about. Light, soft, delicate strawberry/raspberry with a saline note. Think sea salt. This is a wine that is beautiful with restrained seafood plates. Poached or broiled salmon done simple, sautéed scallops or grilled halibut with dill beurre blanc. Also great with Epoisses cheese and fresh baguette as a starter or lunch. Drink now through 2022. Production: 490 cases • Retail: $58

2013 Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills: This is a new wine in the FOXEN Pinot Noir portfolio. It is an assembled wine

meant to showcase what the Sta. Rita Hills are all about as a AVA. John Sebastiano Vineyard (2/3 of the blend) brings the lighter, brighter redfruits from the northeastern corner of the appellation. La Encantada Vineyard (1/3 of the blend) contributes the darker, more brooding blackfruit from the southwestern edge of the appellation. This was a fun wine to assemble, as we had 10 different fermentation lots from 7 different vineyard blocks representing 5 different clones. All the selected lots for the blend were in various makes and models of French cooperage, and the final blend ended up to be 30% new French oak. For a truly fun tasting experience, try blind tasting this wine with our 2013 Pinot Noir, Santa Maria Valley to help you understand the unique differences of our two Pinot Noir appellations. On the food side, you can’t go wrong with pan seared, oven roasted duck breast (keep it pink) with a side of duck fat frites. Drink now through 2024. Production: 1,200 cases • Retail: $38

2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, Vogelzang Vineyard, Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara: It’s hard

to believe that this is our 12th vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon from the esteemed Vogelzang Vineyard. When we sat down last November to a 12 year vertical tasting of these wines (some of you may have been there), the 2012 showed tremendous potential. Lately I am often asked what is it about Happy Canyon that makes Cabernet Sauvignon distinguish itself from other red grapes. I think it has to do with the cobbled gravelly loam soils and the huge diurnal temperature swings from hot daytime to cool nighttime, sometimes 40-50° F in the course of the summer. Throw those things together with the perfect season and harvest of 2012, and it’s hard not to come up with a winner. Lots of graphite, cassis and ripe cherry/plum aromas with a hint of sagebrush, followed up with luscious and ample dark fruit flavors all framed in fine tannins. Pour with grilled filet or New York steak with blue cheese sauce garnished with sweet onion confit. Drink now (with decanting) through 2025. Production: 480 cases • Retail: $54 FOXEN Vineyard & Winery • 7600 Foxen Canyon Rd • Santa Maria, CA • 93454 • Tel. 805.937.4251 • foxenvineyard.com
