Thinking Out Loud... Thanks to all of our Elders for leading us in worship at the Thursday night worship service on February 2 and at both of the worship services on Sunday, February 5. The leadership of each of them in worship was wonderful. Some of you who are unable to come to worship get a copy of the entire Sunday 10:15 worship service each week. This is the case for the Elder-led service. If you are a regular attender but were absent from the Elder-led worship services, you can listen online to the “mini-sermons” given by three of our Elders (www.speedwaychristian.org). In the sermons by Ray Tice, Dorothy Webb, and Art Vermillion, I was struck by how each of them has a unique story of their journeys of faith. They grew up in different locations, and they have had different experiences. Each of their stories had its own flavor. This made listening to each of them very interesting. None of our stories is the same, but in some ways, our stories are the same. Our three Elders each spoke of God and how God has worked and continues to work in their lives. God is the one who unites our varied stories. As we look back at our lives, we see that they have been filled with many detours. Yet, there is a common thread, and that is the presence of God each step of the way. Even when we have been unaware of God’s presence or have doubted God’s presence, when we look back, each of us can see that God is the one constant. This is reason for great gratitude. Another way in which our stories are the same is the influence of the church on our lives. Ray, Dorothy, and Art spoke of the ways that various congregations, including Speedway Christian, have shaped them. The communities of faith of which they have been part have had profound influences on them. I’m sure that we can say the same. Even if we have moved away from some of the teachings and beliefs of a congregation from our past, that church may in some small ways influenced us for good. Since I have heard the stories of three of our Elders, I have been reflecting on my story. I encourage you to do the same with your story of faith. Just what is your story? How has God worked in your life? How have you changed and grown? How is God currently working in your life? Are you changing and growing in your relationship with God? These are some of the questions that the worship services led by our Elders have caused me to consider. I invite you to reflect on these questions, also. As we do, we might just be reminded that God is always with us, and this is cause for a giant, “Hallelujah!” Enjoy the journey, Scott

The E.D.G.E. (Elders Delivering God’s Encouragement) I have an app on my phone that provides daily devotions. This program delivers a different bible verse which leads to a topic to think about twice a day and sometimes it’s surprising how the current entry will relate to something I’ve been thinking about. For example, the entry from this morning comes from Romans 15:7 “Therefore, accept each other just as Christ has accepted you so that God will be given glory.” The thought that accompanies discusses the uncomfortable nature of being around difficult people or persons that we find to be “different”. This made me think of acts performed by someone that I have admired since I was a child, Mr. Fred Rogers. Mr. Rogers was a man of faith who preached tolerance above all things. When asked to speak out against those who had beliefs or lifestyles that were deemed to be “different”, Mr. Rogers would look at this person and tell them, “God loves you just the way you are”. One of the things I love about Speedway Christian Church is the fact that our sign out front reads, “All are welcome”. I believe that we share the love of Christ with those around us when we keep an open mind and get to know someone for who they are instead of relying on first impressions or what we may at first believe to be true. As Valentine’s Day approaches I plan to do two things; convince Laura that the box of chocolates was already half eaten when I got it at the store and give the continuing gift of acceptance to those around me whether I know them or not so I can live my life where “All are Welcome”. ~ Ray Tice

Souper Bowl of Caring was a great success, raising $576.50 to be used to support our congregation’s work with St. John’s Food Pantry and also support Week of Compassion. The Youth Band got back in the swing of things with their first Spring rehearsal on Sunday, February 12. They are working towards playing in worship later in March. Pancake Breakfast is coming up February 26. Youth can sign up for work shifts at the next youth meeting. And thanks to the Thompson and Whittaker families for feeding us last Sunday! Looking Ahead:  Feb 19 – Chi Rho & CYF 5:45-7:30 p.m.  Feb 26 – Pancake Breakfast no evening meetings)

As a reminder, please help us …. To ensure your giving contributions are accounted for correctly, we ask that you help us by writing separate checks for each fund contribution. Since the funds are accounted for separately, this will help to make the accounting process clearer and more efficient. If you do write one check for your giving contribution, and the check amount is for more than the general operating fund, such as renovation, please be sure to note on the check and the envelope the amount going to each fund. As always, we appreciate your understanding. Any questions please contact Wilma or Jennifer in the church office at 317-244-7656.
