11/30 Network seeks young professionals The 11/30 Network, Franklin County’s young professionals group, is now accepting membership enrollment and renewals for its second year. Those interested in learning about the 11/30 Network and how to join are encouraged to attend the Membership Open House on June 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Jan Zell Wines. Membership to the young professionals group costs $30 and is effective from July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017. Anyone who lives and/or works in Franklin County that is 21 to 39 years old as of July 1, 2016 is eligible to join. Membership forms are available online at www.1130network.com. The 11/30 Network has had a successful beginning. After officially launching in February 2015, they initiated membership that June. The group grew quickly, reaching 100 members in just four months and ending its first membership year at more than 150 members. “With the energy the 11/30 Network has been generating, we’ve connected many young professionals in the community and engaged them in new ways,” said Dave Livengood, chair of the 11/30 Network for the 2015-2016 membership year. “We look forward to continue growing this group as it becomes a fixture in Franklin County for years to come.” For more information about the 11/30 Network or a list of upcoming events, visit www.1130network.com or contact Amy Fisher at [email protected] or 717-2647101 ext. 2014. Catch the spirit at ChambersFest On July 30, 1864, Chambersburg became the only northern town burned by Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. Chambersburg bounced back quickly and has celebrated the spirit of the townspeople with an annual festival, ChambersFest, each year since 1986. This year marks the 30th anniversary; thousands of people will come out to enjoy this community celebration and “Catch the Spirit.” This year’s ChambersFest will be July 9-16. A range of events will be held during the festival including the first ever ChambersFest Restaurant Week featuring specials at participating restaurants throughout the week. ChambersFest takes a significant amount of time to plan and coordinate, and the Chamber is asking members for support. Summer events for the whole family June marks the official kick-off to summer. With that comes the infamous statement from our kids...“I’m bored, there’s nothing to do.” Isn’t it kind of ironic that you sometimes hear a similar statement from adults? “There’s nothing to do around here.” Well, let me tell you that just isn’t true. There are tons of events planned in our area, like the Race Against Poverty on June 3, Neighborhood Chefs’ Walk on June 4, American Cancer Society Relay For Life on June 10, 11/30 Network Business Fashion Show on June 22 and the Chamber’s 21st Annual Golf Tournament on June 30. Other ongoing events throughout the summer include First Fridays, which feature fun activities downtown and at local businesses for the entire family to enjoy on the first Friday of every month from May through December. Second Saturdays from June through September feature free live music from local artists in Chambers Fort Park from 5 to 8 p.m. followed by free, family-friendly movies in the park beginning at dusk. June’s Second Saturday will include performances by The Hello Strangers and Soleil as well as a screening of Disney’s Inside Out. ChambersFest will celebrate its 30th anniversary this summer featuring fun events for the whole family to enjoy from July 9-16. Favorites like Old Market Day and 1864: The Burning will return, and the new ChambersFest Restaurant Week will offer dining deals at participating restaurants throughout the entire week. Sip & Savor returns Sept. 17

Run/walk to help fund CASHS scholarships

It will be a formal affair at the Chamber’s Sip & Savor: Black & White Ball on Satuday, September 17 at the Chambersburg Country Club. The signature fundraiser will feature a delicious fourcourse dinner paired with local wines.

The Chamber invites community members along with their family and friends to participate in the 13th Annual Tim and Susan Cook Memorial 1-Mile Race/Walk on Saturday, July 9. Registration begins at 7 a.m. at the Chambersburg YMCA, with the women’s race/walk at 8 a.m. and the men’s race/walk at 8:30 a.m.

Sip & Savor guests will enjoy the pairings while learning about the balances of flavors from a local wine expert and the chef. In addition, attendees will experience a spectacular evening filled with live and silent auctions, entertainment, networking and more. Kennebec Drive Block Party Mixer The popular Kennebec Drive Block Party Mixer is back again this year! The mixer will be held on Tuesday, June 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. co-hosted by a variety of businesses on Kennebec Drive in Chambersburg. You’ll enjoy delicious food and refreshments along with networking and DJ entertainment. Remember, it’s outside so dress for the weather! The one-mile race is held to honor the memory of Tim and Susan Cook, who died tragically in a car accident on December 13, 2002. Both were 1971 graduates of Chambersburg Area Senior High School (CASHS). Tim was a mathematics teacher at the high school for 28 years and was the coach of the girls’ cross country and track teams. Susan was an administrative assistant at Shippensburg University. Money raised from this event is contributed to the Tim and Susan Cook Memorial Scholarship Fund, which annually awards scholarships to two seniors from CASHS who have modeled the characteristics exemplified by Tim and Susan Cook. Last year, the race raised $1,500 that the Chamber was able to donate for the scholarship fund. Participants who register for the race/walk by Sunday, June 26 will receive a discount. Scoop-a-Palooza on July 9 The Greater Chambersburg Chamber Foundation’s 7th Annual Scoop-aPalooza is planned for Saturday, July 9 at Chambersburg Area Senior High School. The event is one of several that kick-off the ChambersFest celebration. The popular all-you-can-eat ice cream fundraiser is a dream for ice cream lovers of all ages. Ice cream vendors set up shop in the high school’s cafeteria and serve samples for attendees to vote on. There’s a kids’ area with fun things to do, as well as a Homemade Ice Cream Contest where amatuers can take a crack at making delicious, unique ice cream flavors in an effort to win prizes. Tickets are available in advance at the Chambersburg Heritage Center & Gift Shop, 100 Lincoln Way East. Adult tickets are $6 each and children 12 and under are $4 each. Tickets will also be on sale at the door for $1 more per ticket.

Youth students graduate program The seventh class of Leadership Franklin County (LFC) Youth graduated this April with tools to help them emerge as leaders in their schools, communities and personal lives. High school sophomores from throughout Franklin County completed the program, which is offered by the Greater Chambersburg Chamber Foundation, an affiliate of the Chamber.

Since last September, students met once a month for half-day sessions where they participated in tours and other learning opportunities in the community. The curriculum included team building exercises, sessions on leadership, communication, ethics and personal accountability, community awareness, diversity and goal setting. The students also chose their own service projects. The projects included: holding a book drive for Legal Aid Society, providing inspiration to classmates for Spirit Week at Shippensburg High School, collecting cards for soldiers at Christmas, coordinating a supply drive for Antietam Humane Society, raising funds for House of Grace and planning a food drive for the food pantry. The 24 graduates from the Class of 2016 are: Makenzie Armstrong, Kalynn Boos, Kaitlyn Bowser, Ariana Burke, Victoria Buselli, Paige Cavanaugh, Julie Crouse, Jacob DeCarli, Caley Eyler, Lorrie Goodrich, Collin Griffin, Alyson Hoffmann, Sydney Jones, Angelica Lopez, Emma Newell, Jacob Reid, Sydni Ressler, Kayla Rhoads, Kennedy Roseborough, Derek Rotz, Morgan Snyder, Kirti Venkatesh, Kaylee Warrenfeltz and Avery Wenger. Second Saturdays kick-off June 11 Second Saturdays are back this summer at Chambers Fort Park featuring live music from 5 to 8 p.m. and movies beginning at dusk. Coordinated by Downtown Chambersburg Inc. (DCI), the Second Saturday series kicks-off on June 11 and continues through September (July 9, August 13 and September 10).

Paint a mural for downtown! Downtown Chambersburg Inc.’s mural project is underway and you can contribute! Area artists are invited to create an individual mural to be displayed at various outdoor locations in the downtown area. Prepared 2-by-4-feet canvases (1/4” primed plywood) will be available free of charge at the Chamber office beginning this month. Deadline for submissions is August 1. The installation will be unveiled at a First Friday event on September 2. The murals will be judged and awards announced on October 15 on the Downtown Chambersburg Facebook page. Starting a conversation about zoning We’re at a tipping point with downtown revitalization. More than 30 years of hard work, commitment and investment have made downtown what it is today: ready for growth. Over $30 million dollars of investment is planned for downtown in the next few years, and we must position ourselves to leverage that investment. Downtown Chambersburg Inc. (DCI) recently completed a Downtown Master Plan. Input from the community during the process yielded many discussions about how to bring more retail and entertainment options that could create more patron and pedestrian activity. One strategy DCI is exploring is a zoning concept called storefront preservation. This would target Main Street businesses with a high percentage of windows and restrict certain uses of these storefronts that are perceived to be counter to revitalization efforts. Uses like residential, churches and soup kitchens do not generate foot traffic that translates into business sales. These types of uses do not maximize the economic activity traditionally associated with a Main Street location. Rather, these kinds of uses create a lack of cohesion, a disjointed feeling on Main Street, and a lack of investor confidence.

Downtown Chambersburg’s Main Street is located in the most flexible zoning district in the borough, which allows most uses and even has areas that are not defined. Some would argue this is a good thing. The reality is there are over 80 unique parcels fronting Main Street from the Towers on the Falling Spring to Washington Street and over 40 unique property owners who have different investment philosophies. A discussion about how to create cohesion from a zoning perspective just makes sense. It’s much easier to facilitate cohesion in a strip mall or business park, because typically there is one owner. With downtown revitalization, collective impact can be marginal without some type of standard or consensus about what brings visitors to downtown. Local government is the only entity who can do that. That is why DCI has started an important conversation about zoning with the Borough Planning and Zoning Commission. DCI has asked the Planning Commission to be involved with a committee to explore zoning in general, and how it can help with downtown revitalization. While DCI has submitted a report to the commission about the storefront preservation zoning concept, it has not asked that it be formally adopted, but rather provides an example of a zoning concept that is being used in other downtowns.

CrabFeast returns in August Don’t drive all the way to the beach for great crabs! We bring them to you at the 21st Annual CrabFeast by Downtown Chambersburg Inc. and VerStandig Broadcasting. The event will be held rain or shine at the AMVETS Post 224 picnic pavilion, 750 Fifth Ave., from 3 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 27. Doors open at 3 p.m. for small games of chance. Food will be served from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets include barbeque chicken and the fixin’s by Main Street Deli and all-you-can-eat Hard Shell Crabs by Woodpoint Grille. Technology grant deadline approaches The Greater Chambersburg Chamber Foundation is offering the Innovative Technology Challenge Grants to educators in all six school districts for innovative use of technology in the classroom for grades K-12. Applications are available on the Chamber website at www.chambersburg.org/ChamberFoundation. The deadline for applications is June 30. Applicants will be evaluated based on three key criteria: innovation, value added to curriculum and advanced academics. Grants totaling $11,600, each between $2,000 and $5,000, are available as a result of contributions from area businesses, including Waste Management, BB&T and M&T Bank. Contributing businesses are eligible for Educational Improvement Tax Credits through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. Chamber Night at the Suns game Enjoy professional baseball, a delicious picnic and fireworks at Chamber Night with The Hagerstown Suns on Friday, August 12 at Municipal Stadium, 274 E. Blessed. That’s the one word that best describes my life. This summer I’ll be celebrating 20 years in the payroll business and, like most small business owners, I owe many thanks to our local community for their support. What does this have to do with the Chambersburg Chamber? Plenty. Take downtown Chambersburg for instance. The Chamber and its affiliates work hard to attract businesses and traffic to the downtown area. This benefits the overall community by attracting more businesses to Franklin County. When more businesses open in the area it raises all boats by increasing the amount of money flowing through our local economy and helping all of us grow our businesses. Being a Chamber Ambassador (an Ambassador helps with member retention and the recruitment of new members) allows me to actively thank the Chamber and the community for everything they’ve done for me and BCM Payroll over the last 20 years. The more the Chamber grows, the more funds they have to invest in making Chambersburg and Franklin County the best it can be. And, of course, I help myself and BCM Payroll by getting to meet lots of great people in the process of helping the Chamber meet its goals. Chambersburg Campus Commercial Truck Driving

Lancaster County Career & Technology Center has been training truck drivers since 1987! The truck driving industry is in high demand and expected to increase as more companies transport their goods by truck. Graduates from our Commercial Truck Driving Program can expect to earn good wages, as much as $45,000 a year to start as an over-the-road driver. Every effort is made to ensure our graduates are successful in finding gainful employment. Classes start the first Monday of every month and run 10 hours a day, Monday through Thursday, for five weeks. Upon graduation students earn CDL Class A or Class B license with endorsements, understand the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rules and regulations and have the skills to obtain an entry-level position as a professional truck driver for local, regional or over-the-road companies. We are also a third-party testing site for the State of Pennsylvania. Testing is available five days a week. Appointments are necessary, please call. Ridesharing bill advances A bill that would provide for the regulation of Transportation Network Companies – such as Uber – was reported out of the House Consumer Affairs Committee in May. Ridesharing has gained widespread popularity throughout the United States. Uber is currently operating under temporary authority in Pennsylvania. Senate Bill 984 would make that authority permanent, and in doing so would help to even the playing field and improve competition. The bill, which passed the Senate with broad support last November, now awaits consideration by the full House. The PA Chamber sent a memo to the committee before the vote voicing approval of the bill, and a compromise amendment by House Consumer Affairs Committee Chairman Bob Godshall, R-Montgomery. Both the bill and the amendment provide necessary protections for consumers and drivers. “Ridesharing and transportation network companies help connect people to their communities and provide Pennsylvanians more transit options and economic opportunity,” the memo stated. “A statewide regulatory framework is necessary for Pennsylvanians to take full advantage of this opportunity, and we urge your support for this important legislation.” In addition, the PA Chamber sent a letter to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission urging the agency to reconsider the excessive penalty it has assessed against Uber for briefly operating without a license in the Commonwealth. The $11 million penalty – which is well in excess of anything the PUC has issued before – sends the wrong message about Pennsylvania’s willingness to embrace innovation and technology, and punishes a company that has provided a welcome benefit to consumers. Thrivent Financial recently contributed $67,500 to Habitat for Humanity of Franklin County to help build a house in Waynesboro this year. This gift marks the largest single source of charitable funds received at one time in Habitat’s 22-year history. Habitat values gifts of every size and remains grateful for the hundreds of donors that have funded many projects over the years.

The Children’s Aid Society, Southern PA District Church of the Brethren recently announced Eric M. Chase, MS of York Township as its new executive director. Chase’s resume includes more than 25 years of executive planning, administration, communications, marketing, fundraising and family counseling experience in the nonprofit sector. 1st Ed Credit Union celebrated National Credit Union Youth Month by focusing on the importance of living a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition and exercise as well as being financially fit with your money. 1st Ed Credit Union offered free youth memberships for the month, hosted a reality fair at Shalom Christian Academy, and invited Fannett-Metal Elementary School students to tour their branch. They also raised funds to support financial education on Financial Fitness Day by donating money to wear jeans for the day. 1st Ed Credit Union dedicates time to educate youth on the importance of financial literacy. Taking time to teach children about finances and involve them in the family budget is a necessary step on their path to financial stability. Orrstown Bank recently donated $10,000 to the Shippensburg Area School District Foundation to support two programs that prepare local children for school. The donation from Orrstown will be used to fund the Ready, Set, Go! and Smooth Sailing programs. Ready, Set, Go! helps parents prepare their children for school through a series of workshops. Smooth Sailing is a week-long program held each summer to boost the skills of local kindergarteners and first-graders. Students at FannettMetal High School will have new laptops thanks to a $10,000 donation by Orrstown Bank. Orrstown donated the funds to the Fannett-Metal Education Foundation that will support upgrading technology in the classrooms.
