Dear Compass Club Members,

May 2016

This is a special shipment with two of our most limited, tasting room exclusive 7200 wines: 2014 Vogelzang Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc and 2013 Pajarito. They are the perfect wines to kick off spring and summer’s warmer days. Over the last month we have experienced one of our most spectacular wildflower shows in many, many years. Since March our hillsides have been jammed packed with blooming poppies, lupin and ceanothus—making this one of the most beautiful springs that I can remember. If you haven’t already done so, I strongly urge you to take a leisurely drive to visit us in the next couple of weeks while the wildflowers are still in bloom. Bill’s crew has been very busy over the last few months working in our vineyards: pruning, weeding, and making sure that everything is ready for the 2016 growing season. And our cellar crew, led by our newly-appointed winemaker, David Whitehair (who has been our assistant winemaker for the last nine years) and Bill bottled the 2014 single-vineyard Pinot Noirs in midMarch, and they will soon be preparing for our second bottling in June. My travel season began early this year with trips to Missouri and Alabama in late January and a quick trip to Arizona last month. And over the next five weeks I have trips planned for Texas, New Jersey and Louisiana—capped off with my second wine dinner at the iconic Emeril’s in New Orleans on June 4th. In addition, Jenny joined me on trips to Tahoe for the 49er Foundation WinterFest and Hawaii for tastings and wine dinners, and she went solo to New York last month for sales work. And daughter Kaitlin has been busy working up and down California. Coast to coast, the Foxen sales team is hard at work! Finally, I want to take this opportunity to announce that Foxen is set to host our first river cruise in July of 2017. Jenny and I will host a seven-night Rhône River Cruise, Avignon to Lyon, July 16-23, 2017 on Uniworld’s Boutique River Cruise Ship, SS Catherine. Compared to our previous Oceania cruises co-hosted with Martinelli, this will be a smaller, more intimate Foxen-only cruise. Go to foodandwinetrails.com for more information and registration. I hope to see you soon at the winery, or at the many events we host around the country this year. To that end, I encourage you to periodically check out our “Events Calendar” on our website, www. Billy’s Winemaker Notes 2014 Sauvignon Blanc, Vogelzang Vineyard, Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara:

There is no better place in Santa Barbara County to capture the true essence of Sauvignon Blanc than Happy Canyon. The warm days and cool nights of Happy Canyon’s growing season enable the Sauvignon Blanc to reach levels of ripeness where the fruit displays tropical notes, while maintaining vital acidity. These conditions allow our winemaking regime to remain simple: gentle pressing, cold settling the juice, then a combination of cold tank fermentation and warm barrel fermentation. The wine is then cellared in one-to-three year old, 500-liter puncheons for an additional nine months before being lightly clay-fined and filtered prior to bottling. This 2014 shows off all the attributes of another perfect season in Happy Canyon: Acacia flower, lemon verbena, gooseberry, Crenshaw melon and lychee fruit— all entwined in a supple texture and just the right amount of acidity. I loved pairing this wine with some of my favorite seafood dishes such as crab cakes with jalapeño lime hollandaise, steamed mussels in a ginger-soy broth, and spicy California rolls. Drink now through 2020. PRODUCTION: 400 cases | RETAIL PRICE: $28 | COMPASS CLUB PRICE: $23.80

2013 Pajarito, Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara:

Pajarito (meaning little bird in Spanish) is a special red blend from Happy Canyon. It is composed of 50% Merlot from Vogelzang Vineyard and 50% Petit Verdot from both the Happy Canyon and Vogelzang Vineyards. Notes of cherry and tobacco are derived from the Merlot, and some really exotic “grapey” extract is a result of the Petit Verdot. Both varietals spent 14 months alone in barrel before being blended. After blending, the wine aged for an additional eight months before bottling without any fining or filtration. This is a wine that keeps on giving pleasure day-in and dayout—plush, yet fruity, and supple on the palate. I suggest pairing it with anything barbecued: red or white meat and grilled vegetables. Drink now through 2022. PRODUCTION: 300 cases | RETAIL PRICE: $42 | COMPASS CLUB PRICE: $35.70
