anchaca UMC is a wonderful home. It's a place to connect with God's life-giving grace. It's a place of worship, fellowship, spiritual growth and service to others. Manchaca is a wonderful home, and because of our location we are in a position to lead many others into a life of spiritual growth and discipleship. Build, Serve, Grow began in 2016 as a capital campaign to help care for our home by providing much needed renovations and improvements to our facilities. Although the primary goal was to address both worship spaces, there were many smaller projects to address. We were able to use the original pledge commitments to renovate the main sanctuary, but that project utilized the majority of BSG campaign funds. Throughout the entire process the Church Council remained committed to renovating the Family Life Center. The Trustees have been working with Church Interiors, Inc. on creating a proposal for the FLC. The goal is to enhance the space for Sunday morning worship while still maintaining a multi-function room. Any renovation will not convert the FLC into a permanent worship setting but it will help create a more worshipful atmosphere for our contemporary worship service. The proposal includes six main areas in the FLC: 1) Paint all the walls 2) New ceiling with new LED lights 3) Replace all the flooring 4) Build a new stage with storage areas 5) Upgrade the audio & video systems 6) Renovate both restrooms in the FLC. Church Interiors is including an optional plan to renovate the main hospitality area and hallways in the main church building. Of course, we must consider the overall cost and timing of these renovations. If we decide to move forward, then we must discuss the options for funding this project (which could include borrowing). The Church Council and Trustees will be working on a presentation for the congregation to consider in the weeks ahead. You can find the detailed FLC proposal on o u r n e w webs it e: www.manchacaumc.org

hen I was a Boy Scout, I went on a special weekend camp out. During that weekend, each scout had to complete specific tasks. One of the tasks we had to complete was to start a campfire and maintain it. To get the fire started, each scout was given only two matches. When you have only two matches to start a fire, you have to be sure about what you are doing; there’s no guess work or second chances. You have to make sure the tinder is adequate, not too wet and not too compact. You also have to have other firewood ready to slowly add to the fire; you can’t leave the starter fire unattended to go off and look for more wood. If all goes well, the tinder will catch and, with care and patience, the fire will grow into something that can give light, share warmth and help to provide nourishment. When I look at a fire or a flame, I can’t help but think about the Holy Spirit. No one really knows how the Holy Spirit works in our lives. I picture it much like starting a campfire. Instead of leaves, sticks or wood shavings being used to start the “fire,” we are the tinder. Our thoughts, our actions, our experiences, our relationships all serve as “tinder” for the Holy Spirit. At the right time, the Holy Spirit will ignite our faith. Then, it’s up to us to keep the flame going. We have to tend the flame carefully through worship, study, and service. If we don’t, we run the risk of letting our flame (our faith and spiritual fire) diminish, or perhaps extinguish completely. While our flame may diminish or even be extinguished, I do believe that it can be reignited. Like a burnt campfire, spiritual embers remain which, when given the proper tinder or fuel, can once again build into a roaring fire. How’s your spiritual flame? Is it well-tended and fully blazing? Or, could it be waning, not quite as bright as it once was? Whatever condition your flame is in, the Holy Spirit is standing by, ready to help keep that flame lit and burning. Just imagine the glorious glow if all our Spiritual fires were visible! Charles Wesley wrote, “See how great a flame aspires, kindled by a spark of grace. Jesus’ love the nations fires, sets the kingdoms on a blaze...” Don’t let your fire go out, tend it carefully. You just might help ignite someone else’s flame.

It Feels Good to Give! The Craft Group loves to create. It feels even better when we can turn those talents into help for others. We focus ed on the church youth for the beginning of the year. We helped purchase Confirmand Bibles, 3rd grade Bibles, college care packages, supported Alex' lemonade stand, Manna bags, youth shares, and supported two Eagles Scouts with their projects. We also purchased a new laminator for the office, made a memorial donation, supported Salvation Army and Meals on Wheels, and helped with utilities. It's time to get crafting, there's more good work to do!

Mother’s Day Carnations It’s time to honor that special lady in your life and also help the MUMC Food Pantry with your donation! The WOW (Women of the Word) group will be selling Mother’s Day carnations before and following all services times on Sunday, April 29, May 6 and May 13, 2018. You may choose to honor or remember any female who has touched your life. Postcards for acknowledging your donation will be available. Carnations may be picked up at any church service on Mother’s Day, May 13, 2018. Funds raised through sales and donations will go to provide food for the MUMC food pantry.

Wear Red for Pentecost Sunday, May 20 For some people the color red symbolizes passion, energy or a call to action. Red is the liturgical color for Pentecost. The Worship and Fine Arts team invites the congregation to wear red Sunday, May 20, as we celebrate Pentecost Sunday. Occurring fifty days after Easter, Pentecost Sunday marks the end of the Easter season. Pentecost Sunday commemorates the receiving of the Holy Spirit by the disciples as recounted in Acts 2. Pentecost is often referred to as the Birthday of the Church since the disciples were given the gifts of the Spirit and began to preach the Gospel in languages that all could understand. Images often associated with Pentecost are the descending dove, tongues of flame, and other symbols of the church such as a ship or rainbow.

OPEN HEARTS Tuesday, MAY 1 @ 7 PM Room 8 – Main Building across from the Sanctuary Most of us probably were not Head Cheerleader nor First-String Quarterback. Nor were we part of the “cool gang” at school. We might even have been among those who were considered different; odd; the “other”. Maybe we were bullied. At one time that was considered a part of growing up. If you were on the receiving end of those mean words/actions, I doubt that you felt it was something anyone should have to endure. LGBTQ children/teens are statistically more apt to be bullied. If it is your child who has endured this behavior, it hurts twice as much. After all, we are supposed to protect our children. Open Hearts is a safe place where we let each other know that it’s OK to be different. Jesus didn’t always fit in as he roamed from place to place. He was known to seek out “the others”. No one should feel left out; especially in their families or their churches. If you want to talk with others who have been in your shoes- parents, family and friends of LGBTQ individuals- join us the first Tuesday of each month as we share and support one another. If you need more information, call Loretta [mother of a gay son] 281-615-6149 [cell] or Kim 512-282-7274 [at the church]. Join us and feel free to bring a friend. All are welcome.

Summer 2018 Wordspirations Women’s Bible Study on Sundays May 20, June 10, July 15, August 12, 4-6 pm

The Daniel Plan: A 6-week Journey to Health Monday Evenings, Starting June 4, 6:30 – 8 p.m. Cost: $5 for materials (for new members) The Daniel Plan will equip you with practical tools and resources to bring health into every area of your life. The program is centered on five Bible-based essentials: faith, food, fitness, focus and friends. Whether you want to lose weight or just improve overall health, you'll learn simple ways to incorporate healthy choices into your current lifestyle. The Daniel Plan is not a diet – it’s about changing your life! You can customize your plan and be empowered to make choices based on your own food and fitness goals. You can learn more about The Daniel Plan on their website: www.danielplan.com. Come and see how the Daniel Plan might work for you! We will meet for 6 Monday evenings, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., beginning June 4 (skipping June 25). The cost of the class is $5 to cover the cost of materials. Daniel Plan books and resources will be offered at a discounted rate. For added support and accountability, consider signing up for the Personal Fitness Challenge (kick off on Sunday, June 3rd after worship in the Parlor).

Our Spring weekly class is over but we can’t stand to not see each other until September! So like the last two summers, we are offering four monthly meetings of our Wordspirations Women’s Bible Study, and opening them up to all who would like to join us! We will meet Sunday afternoons from 4:00-6:00 p.m. and fellowship together, sing, visit, and focus on a particular passage of Scripture. We read the passage aloud several times, listen, let God speak to our hearts, and then journal about it in the moment. Then we share with each other and discover how amazing it is that God knows just what we each need to hear from Him – everyone has something different and very personal. We all leave feeling lighter and uplifted by God’s touch and the community of others. No cost, no homework, and there are always snacks! Led by Ellen Carpenter and Team ~ Julie Chandler, Sharon Mize, and Debi Jones. We would love for you to join us.

Personal Fitness Challenge (PFC) begins June 3rd! Join me and others in a personal fitness challenge! Establish your own personal goals for increased fitness and overall better feelings about your health and well-being through weight loss/exercise/personal habits, etc. Through our Christian Education department, we will also be offering a six-week Daniel Plan class, beginning Monday, June 4. Register for that class here: http://www.manchacaumc.org/event/1121116-2018-06-04-daniel-plan-class/ (This Daniel Plan class sign up can be found on the church's website Event Calendar)

Kickoff Gathering For those interested in establishing a personal fitness challenge (a "PFC"), we will offer a "kickoff" meeting to gather, share our goals for fitness, and even find accountability partners to help keep one another on track. At this initial gathering, we'll also be able to hear more about the Daniel Plan from Kim Carroll, Director of Christian Education. As added personal fitness support, Wesley Nurse, Eileen Stedl-Walter, will be offering, by appointment, opportunities for health screenings: blood pressure check, weigh-ins and other services. For a scheduled time, contact Eileen at [email protected]. Whatever you desire to do for your personal fitness, we want to pray for and support you, and please consider joining us for the kickoff gathering, June 3rd, immediately following 11:00 a.m. services in the Parlor (in the main building near the sanctuary). Contact Pastor Rosie at (512) 576-6937 (cell and text) for further information.

Happy? what it is and how to find it Wednesday Morning Women’s Bible Study June 13 & 27, July 11 & 18, 9:30 – 11 a.m. Cost: $10 for the book We all dream of being happy. If we could just lose the extra weight, get the job, buy the house, we could truly be happy. But over time, it begins to seem as though lasting happiness is unattainable. So how do we find lasting happiness and contentment in our lives? Come and see!

5K Fun! Creating Opportunities for All Students The 3rd Annual Kids Dash and 5K Run was held this year again at Menchaca Elementary School. A great big THANK YOU to all the volunteers, race participants, donors and prayer warriors for making it such a fun time! The 5K commenced at Menchaca Elementary track and continued up to Valentina's via Manchaca Road. Sixty-eight (68) runners/walkers came out with a total of 97 participants registered. You can see more details of the race by clicking here: tinyurl.com/2018feat and then click on "Results." Funds raised for this 5K will go to support activities at all 3 of our partner schools: Menchaca Elementary, Paredes Middle and Akins High. In order to reach our minimum goal of $12,000 (all of which will go directly to support these partner schools) you are invited to continue giving! If you have not had a chance to do so, or desire to do more, you can give through Manchaca UMC (if paying by check or money order, memo line should indicate "5K Run"). For more information about this run or other ways we support our schools, please contact Pastor Rosie at [email protected] or (512) 576-6937 (cell and text) OR Terri Hanson at [email protected]. Thank you again for your prayers, support and love. Together, we make a wonderful difference in our community! In Christ's Love, Always,

Pastor Rosie

Hey Church – We need your support! Rolling River Rampage, July 30 – August 3 This summer we hope to welcome over 200 children into our church. At least 75% of these students will come from our community with many not having a church home of their own. In order for VBS to be a successful outreach, we need 100% support from our congregation. So, how can you help? • Be Group Leader!* As of this writing, we still need 2 Preschool/Kindergarten Group Leaders and 5 Elementary Group Leaders! • Be an Early Playground Volunteer (7:45-8:45)!* Great opportunity for those who want to serve but also have to work. • Be a Greeter! Greet families, check in the children; check them out at the end of the day. • Help with VBS Prep – Some prep can be done at home! • Provide items on our wish list (see below). • Donate scholarship money. The cost to attend VBS is $20 per child, but we offer scholarships to those who can’t afford it. • Serve on the Prayer Team! *Volunteers who work directly with children must be actively involved in our church for at least 6 months (or have history at another church that we can check), complete a background check, and attend safety training through the Rio Texas Conference. If you are interested in helping in any of these ways, please contact Kim Carroll at 512-2827274 or [email protected].
