NEWS FROM MEMBER FEDERATIONS PORTUGAL Since 25th of January of 2008, the Portuguese Academic Federation of University Sport (FADU) has new social organs (President and Board of Directors) for the next 2 years (2008 - 2009). The investiture ceremony took place at the Sportive Medical Centre (University Stadium of Lisbon) and important personalities from the sport business and also from the Portuguese Universities was invited. Andre Couto, the new FADU President, was very clear about his intention regarding the new Board: “F.A.D.U. begins a new path today, a new reformist spirit that will command this Academic Federation”. Some important issues were presented, such as the new facilities conditions, the new image and communication, and a new path for the financial and economic area. For now, it is their goal to continue the work that was previously developed and the main goal is, of course, the Sport and the Students.

FINLAND Finnish Student Sports Federation celebrated its 84th anniversary on Friday, February 1. At this occasion, Mr. Tuukka Eloranta, President of the federation, awarded the annual student athlete prize to Johanna Manninen, who won two gold medals in Bangkok Universiade in track and field events. Manninen is 27 years old and studies sport sciences at the University of Jyväskylä. According to this former world junior champion, combining study and sport has worked rather well for her and the classes have offered her a possibility to forget sport for a little while. She was very happy for her success in Bangkok as well as the nomination for Finnish Student Athlete of 2007. Her Universiade victories were noticed up to the highest national level as Finnish President, Mrs. Tarja Halonen, invited her to reception, which is held every year on Finnish Independence Day, December 6. Finnish Student Sports Federation has been nominating Finnish Student Athlete of the Year since 2002. Reasons for the nomination are success in international elite sport events for students (Universiade or World University Championships) and proven ability to precede studies along with sport career.

GERMANY Hamburg was selected to be the German candidate city for the World University Games 2015. The General Assembly of the German University Sport Federation (ADH) was convinced that the hanseatic concept of hosting Games in the heart of the city will be most successful. Germany’s candidacy enjoys full support of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and the German Government. It is realized in close coordination with the Federal Ministry of Inner Affairs. ADH’s chairman Nico Sperle explains: “Hamburg’s Universiade concept not only convinced the German advisory committee but also convinced the members of AHD. Dr. Verena Burk, the German member of the Executive Committee of the FISU, thinks positively about Germany’s chances of being able to organize the 2015 Universiade: “Germany enjoys a great reputation regarding international sports events worldwide. This also applies to the sector of university sport. Many people inside and outside FISU enjoy remembering the Universiade 1989 in Duisburg which

had been prepared in about 150 days only.” ADH and the City of Hamburg want to use the opportunity to present themselves to the international sports audience to the participating nations and to the FISU as an experienced organizer for high quality sport events. So Hamburg will host the WUC Beach-volleyball in June 2008. The completed General Entry procedure has come up with a record breaking result of 31 countries promising to take part in the WUC Beachvolleyball 2008. Among them are the leading Beachvolleyball nations Brazil, China and the USA. In addition to these top ranked teams the winning nations from the championships 2006 in Cyprus will attend: France, Switzerland and Germany. Germany as the host country will probably line up 3 male and 3 female duos, while the other nations will be able to send 4 teams in total.

CROATIA On the meeting of the Croatian University Sports Federation, CUSF Zagreb University Sports Association and Pula University Sport Federation were accepted in the CUSF membership. All the members of CUSF were invited and encouraged to send more students too all EUSA and FISU competitions in 2008. General Assembly also discussed the plans for the future. In 2009, CUSF plans to organize ENAS conference in Zagreb, EUC Bridge in Opatija and EUSA Symposium in Zadar; while in 2008 EUCs in Rowing and Sailing will be organized in Zagreb and Zadar.
