Downtown murals bring community together

Renowned Philadelphia-based mosaic-mural artist, Isaiah Zagar, worked with local volunteers in July to install two large-scale murals in downtown Chambersburg. Zagar was commissioned by Downtown Chambersburg Inc. (DCI) for the project. The two mural sites are the Main Street Deli building located at 33 N. Main St. and The Foundry building at 100 S. Main St. “This project exemplifies the spirit of the community and what can happen when you have vision and passion,” said Noel Purdy, president of DCI. “The timing, resources and energy all aligned to make this project happen, and I think it’s just the beginning of more great projects for our town.” The Chambersburg Community Mural Project began when Holly Baker Strayer, an art teacher at Chambersburg Area Senior High School, approached DCI to partner with her to bring Zagar to Chambersburg. “It’s important to have citizen-leaders, like Holly, who can make things like this happen,” said Purdy. Strayer has taught her art students about Zagar’s work for years and is inspired by how his work has transformed Philadelphia neighborhoods. With DCI as a partner, Strayer asked Zagar to come to Chambersburg to create a mural. “As an artist, I feel that Isaiah’s work is a fun and creative way to bring art to the downtown area. Art inspires and builds community,” said Strayer. Story continued on page 3.

CHAIR’S MESSAGE

Getting ready for back to school If you’re anything like me, you can’t believe school is starting up in just a few short weeks. It seems like just yesterday summer was finally here. Is vacation season really almost over? Unfortunately, yes, and if you have kids it’s time to start getting them ready to return to school. Before you begin your back to school planning, I want to encourage you to take some time to think about how you can support other Chamber members in the process. Flip through our new 2016/2017 Membership Directory & Community Profile for a list of fellow Chamber members. The Chamber Card, which was implemented in 2010 as part of the Chamber’s Buy Local initiative, offers great savings from more than 60 local businesses. Just a quick glance down the member deals on the website should give you plenty of options for local back to school shopping: www.chambersburg.org/ChamberCard. Beyond buying supplies for your own family, keep in mind there are many local kids whose families are in tough financial situations and cannot afford new school supplies. That is why organizations like United Way of Franklin County coordinate drives to collect donations. United Way’s Stuff the Bus is a great opportunity to get the family involved in community giving and volunteering. For information about how to donate or volunteer, give them a call at 717-262-0015. In addition to getting your own family ready and helping those in the community, the impending arrival of fall means getting back into busy season for many businesses. It means new events, promotions, services and more. If your business is looking to get the word out about your fall plans, look no further than advertising through the Chamber for targeted marketing. With affordable options ranging from print to digital advertising, you’ll find just the right package to suit your business’s needs. Contact the Chamber to put together your marketing plan at 717-264-7101. Make sure to squeeze in a few more summer barbeques and maybe a weekend to the Eastern Shore. Fall may be on the way but I plan to enjoy every last minute of my favorite season of the year! Troy Garman Realtor, RE/MAX Realty Agency Board Chair, Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce

Downtown murals This project certainly has brought the community together. More than 30 volunteers helped with the mural installation, and local residents stopped by to observe the installations throughout the week-long process. “We were excited to work with Isaiah. I have visited the Magic Gardens and seen his work in South Philly, and I appreciate his unique art,” said Mary Alleman, a volunteer who helped with the installations. “I think it’s important to make art available for all to enjoy, and that’s what Isaiah’s work is all about.” Public art has been used to help revitalize as well as improve the look and feel of downtowns. DCI has been working to expand its existing downtown mural project, a temporary mural exhibit that features 80+ murals, to include permanent murals. DCI hopes that the Zagar mural project will be the catalyst for an ongoing permanent mural project in the downtown. To fund the project, DCI raised $24,000 in private donations in less than a month from both corporate sponsors and individual donors. Special thanks to our Community Challenge Grant Sponsor, Patriot Federal Credit Union, and Create Community Sponsors: Chambersburg Rotary Foundation, GDC IT Solutions, Rotary Club of Chambersburg, SpiriTrust Lutheran and Wilson College.

Youth bond at summer retreat Leadership Franklin County (LFC) Youth class of 2017 held their summer retreat in July at Manito. They used the day to get to know each other better and receive an introduction to leadership. The day was led by Mary Beth Williams of Wilson College. She took the students though ice breaker activities and a variety of trust-building activities on the Manito grounds. The morning ended with the opportunity to climb the 50-foot-high Manito tower. After lunch the students spoke about leadership and enjoyed more activities. Williams discussed the importance of teamwork, appreciation, learning and continuous improvement in leadership. The students learned to work together and to support and encourage each other. The day ended with a reception for students and their families. Students attend the LFC Youth program at no charge thanks to program sponsor Wilson College.

“Window Walk on Main is an innovative way to beautify the vacant windows along Main Street to help property owners in search of new tenants while at the same time providing something fun, free and walkable for the community to enjoy,” said Noel Purdy, president of DCI. The Window Walk will be ongoing throughout the year. To kick-off the project, eight properties feature displays of murals from the 2015 Downtown Mural Project. The murals are available for purchase in an online auction and proceeds will be donated to support local arts through The Foundry, a Chambersburg artist cooperative located at 100 S. Main St. Displays stretch from 115 N. Main to 151 S. Main and will rotate every few months to highlight the arts and local businesses. Each theme will encourage foot traffic and shopping along Main Street. “The timing of this project is perfect to support the arts community, with The Foundry recently forming downtown and the installation of new murals through the Chambersburg Community Mural Project with Isaiah Zagar,” said Purdy. The Foundry began in fall 2015 and has grown to house retail, exhibit and creative spaces. The arts co-op was created to provide artists in the Cumberland Valley with resources and an outlet to grow their talent while seeking to bridge the gap between artists and the greater community. To bid on murals, visit www.biddingowl.com/DTCburg. The auction closes on August 31. Anyone interested in joining the Window Walk Committee to help develop and set-up displays may contact Amy Fisher Weibley at [email protected] or 717-264-7101 ext. 204. Window Walk on Main is possible thanks to DCI’s marketing partners as well as the property owners. Specials thanks to The Salvation Army of Chambersburg for donating fabric to decorate the spaces.

Have you ever been asked by an out-of-towner about the “famous Chambersburg peaches” and been at a loss for what to say? If you’re anything like me, you may have lived in Chambersburg for as long as you can remember and still not be aware of the market for peaches that seems to be well-known everywhere except Chambersburg. Nevertheless, Chambersburg peaches are in high demand from people who live both in and out of state. They’ve become a source of pride for the community and a representation of Chambersburg as a whole. We’re about ready to reach the peak of peach season, so if you’re looking to sink your teeth into a juicy Chambersburg peach, look no farther than Shatzer’s Fruit Market or Windy Knoll Farm Market. If your love for Chambersburg and peaches extends beyond just your stomach, stop by the Heritage Center Gift Shop on the square in downtown Chambersburg. The gift shop is the exclusive retailer of Chambersburg Peach souvenirs. Peach-scented soap, sugar scrub and bath bombs smell as delicious as our peaches taste. Not to mention they’re locally made, so you can care for the community as well as your nose! Thanks to Cynthia Newman of Cynsational Suds, our hometown source of peachy bath products, you can enjoy a luxurious experience that just might make you crave peaches even more. Candles made locally by Thompson Soy Scents offer the same fruity aroma you can extend to the rest of your house. Final 2016-17 State Budget authorizes $1.3 billion revenue package The PA Chamber successfully defeated various proposals to impose a myriad of taxes this Fiscal Year, including a new gross receipts tax on commercial and residential natural gas users. However, the General Assembly’s authorization of a $1.3 billion revenue package to pay for a nearly 5 percent increase in spending over 2015-16 levels - did result in some new taxes and tax increases within the final 2016-17 state budget.

Cumberland Valley Christian School Contained within the revenue package is increased taxes on certain types of tobacco, an expansion of the sales tax to include digital downloads, applying the Personal Income Tax to lottery winnings, capping the vendor’s allowance on the sales tax at $25 per month or $300 per year, rate changes in the Bank Shares Tax, a 2 percent increase on the tax on table games and revenues from Act 39 of 2016 (the liquor reform bill). The legislation also includes a new tax amnesty program, which the PA Chamber supports, and assumes revenues from gaming expansion, even though this issue has been pushed off until the fall. In all, the plan raises a little more than $750 million through new state taxes and revenues. Close to $500 million of this is attributable to an increase in Pennsylvania’s cigarette tax, to $2.60 per pack. These increases are coupled with about $534 million in one-time loans from inter-governmental funds. This article was written by the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry.
