“THE COST” Luke 9:23-27, 57-62; 14:25-35 June 26, 2016

Faith starts with a decision to trust Jesus fully and continues with the decision, every day, to follow Jesus exclusively . I. The crucified self . (9:23-27) A. Three requirements for coming after Jesus: 1. Deny yourself. 2. Bear your cross daily . 3. Follow Jesus . B. Jesus calls us to come and die , so that we might live. (9:24-26) The surpassing value of Jesus turns every other value on its head. C. Seeing the kingdom. (9:27) II. The primacy of Jesus. (9:57-62) A. Being with Jesus overrides a place to call home . (9:58) B. Being with Jesus supersedes every other valuable relationship . (9:59-60) III. The deliberate decision. (14:25-35) A. Sit down and count the cost! (14:28) B. “COME TO GO” Mark 3:7-21

Passage Overview: Much has been written over the years about Jesus’ strategy for discipleship. Perhaps the simplest description of His plan for training the Twelve is found in Mark 3:14, “And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach.” Jesus didn’t develop a strategy as He went along. From the moment He chose His inner circle of disciples, He knew what would be required to equip them for ministry. A major transformation would need to take place in these men. They were rough, unskilled and untrained. Their occupations had taken them in very different directions from where Jesus would take them. His plan for transforming each one of these men was the same. Come to go. He called them to be with Him first. Living in His presence, they would see Him respond to adversity. They would hear Him teach. They would ask questions. They would see His power. They would come to know Him intimately. They saw the patterns in His life that preceded His public ministry. They watched Him pray. They searched for Him when He had slipped off into desolate places for prayer. They knew His heart and heard His voice. Being in His presence prepared them to go out to preach. The order is essential. Every pattern for life, every message to be given, was derived from His presence. Jesus is the source. The disciples became the channel through which the love, truth, and power of the source would flow. Jesus’ method has never changed. We must be with him, before we can represent Him. We must learn from Him before we can teach others. We must know Him before we can tell others about Him. Reading for Next Week: Mark 3:7-21
