SERMON SUMMARY:

Ministry of the Holy Spirit May 24, 2015
 Gary Hutchison

If in Romans 7 Paul has been preoccupied with the place of the law, in Romans 8 his preoccupation is with the work of the Spirit. We can divide what the Apostle Paul teaches us about the ministry of God’s Spirit in this passage into three categories. 1. The Holy Spirit gives us a New Freedom. (Rom 8:1-8) The Holy Spirit has liberated us from the bondage of the Law (Rom 8:1-3) and empowers us to fulfill the Law’s just requirements (Rom 8:4). As a result we now live each day according to the Spirit and set our minds on His desires (Rom 8:5). 2. The Holy Spirit gives us a New Relationship. (Rom 8:9-12) Every true Christian receives the Holy Spirit, so that our body has become “a temple of the Holy Spirit” in which He dwells (Rom 8:9). He gives life to our Spirits (Rom 8:10), life to our bodies (Rom 8:11) and helps us to live His way (Rom 8:11). 3. The Holy Spirit gives us a New Leadership. (Rom 8:13-17) The number one way the indwelling Holy Spirit wants lead us is in the way of holiness! As God’s children, We have a future inheritance that is so awesome that it should cause us to put everything else in its proper place.

SERMON DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: What is the “Law” that is referred to in Romans 7:7-9? Is the “Law” good or bad? What is the purpose of the Law? What was the law unable to do? What did Jesus do on our behalf in Romans 8:3? Imagine two different people, one who has the Holy Spirit living in him and another who does not have the Holy Spirit. What is the first person capable of doing because of the Spirit that the second person is not capable of doing? Did Jesus come just for our justification (removing the condemnation in Rom 8:1) or did he have something more in mind for us? How do we “put to death the deeds of the body” that we call sanctification (Rom 8:13)?

Why did Jesus speak so radically about sanctification in Mark 9:47? What would it look like if we were as radical about sin as Jesus wants us to be? What is the number one way that Holy Spirit wants to lead us according to Rom 8:13? What are some of the gifts that Holy Spirit gives us that help us walk in the light (1 John 1) from Romans 8? Gary talked about a story of a man that was only a mile from his inheritance when his carriage broke down. Should he press on even though he encountered hardship or should he give up on the inheritance? How much more should we press on regardless of opposition or hardship when we are so close to the inheritance that God has for us?
